Oversized Trend

We seem to have moved away from 'boyfriend' and now it's called 'oversized'. But it's obviously still a trend in coats, jackets, etc.

My question; 'Can you get away with this trend if you're short(ish) and getting on a bit?'

I've replaced my raincoat with a John Lewis one, which is described as 'oversized' online. It arrived today and I love the colours (seaside-ish) and design, but will I just look like a gnome going fishing to everybody else? I'm 5'3". It wasn't cheap, but if my past history is anything to go on I'll own it for years and years. Can't post a photo because my phone died from lack of software updates. Can I make this work? It's only a mac after all, but it definately dwarfs me.

Thanks for the phone info! You never said (you probably did😁) it was a trench type of Mac!!! It's gorgeous, OP and I can definitely see you wafting about a foggy beach - very much like the second Mrs de Winter from Rebecca! The great thing about your coat is that it's timeless, so a real investment.
Have a great time wearing it on your hols - and every other time too!

itsnotmeitsu · 03/11/2021 23:43

@TheLovechildOfYvesAndIsabel > LOL at Mrs DeWinter Grin. I'm actually going to Paris for a few days next week [first holiday since early 2020) [for some reason my opening bracket isn't working - another issue altogether, and weird]. I'm not taking my wafting mac with me, as I'm sure it doesn't rain in Paris Hmm. I recently bought a very heavily discounted coat from TKMaxx and will be wearing that, as I'll feel so special [to be fair, it did cost a fortune originally) [bloody opening bracket]. But as soon as I get back to Yorkshire I'll be wafting about everywhere!

I don’t want “oversized”! For goodness sake, I want my size

LalalalalalaLand123 · 04/11/2021 17:48

I'm loving oversized! Hides my mum-tum, and is super comfy, and I think looks good. I tend to wear skinny jeans, jeggings or leggings, and oversized top. Living the dream!

LalalalalalaLand123 · 04/11/2021 17:49

PS I am short and getting on a bit lol

Ddot · 04/11/2021 18:24

I'm 5 3 and love the oversized look, just dont go all out. Wear your coat over cigarette pants or straight Jeans. I love a big ass jumper tucked in at just one corner and a midi skirt ankle boots and my huge coat

Blackmagicqueen · 17/01/2022 09:01

I love a comfy oversized jumper or hoodie but don't do cropped wide leg and hate the puffa coat down to ankles sunglasses in winter look! Had a nightmare finding a nice coat this year that wasn't at my feet or a crop top! I wear what i like and couldn't care a less if it is 'on trend' it all goes back around anyway!

Bagelsandbrie · 17/01/2022 09:11

LOL @ “gnome going fishing” Grin

I like the oversized trend. But then I think fashion has changed so much in the last few years. It isn’t even about what looks flattering / fits anymore I don’t think. It’s just about being comfortable and wearing something you like. I’m 41 and I find myself wearing things now that 5/10 years ago I would have been HmmShock at - like yesterday I wore oversized joggers, an adidas hoodie and chunky trainers with a Seasalt raincoat over the top! And I quite liked myself, it was comfy and I felt a bit trendy. But the 30 something me wouldn’t have been seen dead outside the house in a tracksuit.

I think covid has changed our views of clothes really. More people working from home, going on long walks more etc.

coogee · 17/01/2022 10:51

It’s a trend that I am just ignoring. I prefer fitted. I suspect it is a reaction to being a nerdy baggy dresser in my teens and early 20s.

Notcontent · 17/01/2022 11:07

I am short and love oversized costs. And I am not young. As someone else said, baggy and wide trousers don’t work for me - unless it’s summer and I can wear them with a small, fitted top. But coats, jackets, jumpers look great.

AdoptedBumpkin · 17/01/2022 11:52

I'd quite like a coat with an oversized hood, would feel very cosy.

Blackmagicqueen · 18/01/2022 07:37

@AdoptedBumpkin you can have mine, I can't see out of the bloody thing, it is ridiculous! 🤣 I look like I'm off to trek the himalayas

borntobequiet · 18/01/2022 09:02

I’ve got this one (ASOS) and I’m in my late sixties, 5’4”.
I did size down but it’s still huge, super warm and fun to wear.

Both the zebra print coats I tried on in Jigsaw recently were oversized. I'm a 12 and 5 ft 5 and they looked huge.

I don't like the look.

I did buy a nice blue Zara jumper last year that was oversized but knew it when I tried it on so it's still oversized but looks flattering.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 18/01/2022 11:09

I like oversized (5ft 6, size 10) but agree that you need balance between slim and billow-y. I have an oversized Arket jumper on today, which I am wearing with a French tuck in straight leg jeans - Levi's 501s. It would look awful worn with wide leg trousers though.

However, I do make an exception for my duvet coat, which comes down almost to my ankles. I don't care if I look big in it, it is so cosy.

BusterGonad · 18/01/2022 12:36

I've very recently bought 2 oversized cardigans, I was hesitant as I'm big boobed and not skinny (not fat just tall and average size), but I actually love them, they look really nice undone and lose, I look very shapeless when they are done up but I still love them a lot. I ended up getting 2 more in the same style, and I'm still tempted to buy more in the sale!

BrunoNoNoNo · 18/01/2022 12:55

I'm 5 ft 3 and the oversized look is terrible on me.

I'm so fed up of it, and it's definitely limiting my purchasing options.

I dont know if it's my body shape but baggy clothing with drop shoulders makes me look butch.

Maxi skirts/dresses make me look like a child dressing up in my mum's clothes. Same with oversized coats.

I look so much better in well fitted clothing. Like a previous poster said it can be loose, but needs to be fitted in the right places (shoulders etc).

Gloucester15 · 18/01/2022 14:04

@BrunoNoNoNo I could have written this.

Oversized and drop shoulders are terrible on me - I saw someone make a reference to 'beefy' arms and that's what a dropped shoulder chunky knit gives me. Same with a a puff sleeve.

Anyone got any suggestions of shops that aren't dominated by oversized clothing?

Divebar2021 · 18/01/2022 15:01

I love oversized although I don’t give too much headspace to 1) other peoples opinions 2) whether it makes me look larger or not. The Olsen Twins are both tiny and wear oversized all the time - they have fashion brand The Row which is good for inspiration. Studio Nicholson is a fashion brand with a very specific oversized look. I find Raey a nice combination of fitted and oversized if Studio Nicholson is too big all over. As a size 16 I tend to frequent the mens section of charity shops and have picked up great blazers, macs, cardigans and sweaters. I’ve just found some heavy denim French workman’s trousers that I just need to take up. I don’t mind a big shirt over wide trousers but if that’s too much you can go more fitted with either the top or bottom. I like to French tuck my top to show waist, or wear a cross body bag to show the body a little. Adjustments can be made by a seamstress to adjust the silhouette slightly to be more flattering. After I lost weight I also had a blazer taken up on the sleeves which kept it from looking too slobby… there’s a fine line for sure. Sometimes I like to go a bit Vampireswife and that’s a completely different vibe but fashion is supposed to be fun surely?

Its about proportion. I came across this which I have wanted to share for ages and finally an opportunity! Honestly I have found it super helpful when figuring out why some things look blah and some click. Its better to have some contrast so not all wide or all slim, but not too much as it can look odd.

I'm not a huge fan. Where I have spotted less oversized:

Boden
Some Monki
Sugarhill Brighton- lots of nicely fitted at the shoulders jumpers
Woolovers

Generally if you hunt M&S, Next.

Gloucester15 · 19/01/2022 11:19

@MistySkiesAfterRain

Yes, I noticed that M&S had more regular fit jumpers.

Just remembered Esprit too.

itsnotmeitsu · 19/01/2022 20:48

I've now found when I feel most relaxed out and about > My large camel coat and my drmartens. Everything else fits with those.
