Can boots be worn with non skinny trousers?

Tying myself in knots trying to work out a winter wardrobe for work (teacher of sen). I will need to wear boots at some point as it gets cold where I live and I do some outdoor stuff with the kids sometimes. I really don't suit skinny trousers (chunky legs) but can boots work with other types of trousers? If so, what ones? Need to be comfortable and not too expensive! Thanks 😊

Er "boot cut"?
They need to not quite touch the floor in bare feet, then they won't drag in the mud when wearing shoes, but won't look half mast either.

I'd look for some thick stretchy ones with pockets.

duvetdrama · 24/10/2021 13:43

I used to wear boot cut but I wonder if they are dated now? Not sure 🤔

I thought Bootcut were making a come back?

Rainbowheart1 · 24/10/2021 13:55

The answer is simply….no!

Anything that goes on the outside of the boot/shoe will get wet the minute it rains and soak up your trousers, this is why skinny jeans are so loved. No matter how dated they are, come winter….there practical!

duvetdrama · 24/10/2021 14:15

@Rainbowheart1 I don't think skinny are dated at all but just don't suit me!

I wear docs with all my looser jeans, mostly mom style. I cuff them so they stop just above the boot and wear a woolly sock to cover the bit of ankle in between. I think it looks fine! I used to wear skinnies the same way.

duvetdrama · 24/10/2021 15:00

@cannaethink I don't think I could pull that look off but think it sounds nice. Can't really be that dressed down for school either

If you can't wear loose rolled jeans and don't want to do bootcuts (don't blame you!) then no. Straight legs will gather awkwardly on top of the boots. Thermal tights and day dresses?

katienana · 24/10/2021 15:08

Mom jeans, thick socks and hiking boots look really good imo. I roll the jeans so they just sit on top of the boot. With thick socks or even thermal leggings under you won't get cold. I live in the North East and was fine like this last winter.

ditalini · 24/10/2021 15:11

Jersey dresses and thick tights or leggings are my winter go-to with boots.

cannaethink · 24/10/2021 15:12

Ah yes, my work is very casual!
If I need to look smart and be warm I go with a wool dress. Although I’m experimenting with a pair of thick dark navy cropped wide legs with navy socks and brown docs. I think it looks ok Blush not 100% sure though! I think lace up boots that are quite tight on your leg are easier to style with different trousers.

lazylinguist · 24/10/2021 15:49

Tricky. I'm not a fan of bootcut. I have recently embraced the looser, rolled look, but that's too casual for work (I'm a teacher too). My legs are just about ok in skinnies, but I don't wear them to work.

I live in a cold, wet place too. My winter school outfits are straight trousers and low, flat ankle boots or skirts/dresses with thick tights and calf or knee-length boots. You could also go for thick leggings, tunic-length top and boots. MN often hates the latter look, but it's practical, flattering and much worn by teachers!

TiddleTaddleTat · 24/10/2021 15:51

Quite a rigid fabric in a tailored slim trouser could work , roll the hem up to top of Chelsea or laced up boot. Personally I dislike the look of trousers that go over the top of a boot.

TheVeryThing · 24/10/2021 15:56

How about straight leg ankle length trousers with chelsea boots or similar flat smart boots? I wear these and think they look good. There are so many options with trousers now there is no reason to be restricted to a style that doesn’t suit you.
Could you really not wear black jeans with the ends folded up?
What about cords?

Bootcut and flares very much in this year.
MummyJ12 · 24/10/2021 16:11

Cropped trousers with a wider leg look great with the right pair of boots. (Especially second skin or Oxfords)
Biker or combat boots look gorgeous with skinny trousers/jeans and skirts with opaques.
Bootcut trousers are absolutely having a moment, just don’t have them too long. Or like a pp rightly put, you’ll get soggy if it rains!
Ultimately, find some boots that you love and work things out from there.

duvetdrama · 24/10/2021 16:18

@TheVeryThing I like the sound of that...straight trousers are the most flattering for me I think. I'll have a look for something like that

@lazylinguist I'd like to wear dresses and leggings/boots but again I don't have the confidence due to my chunky legs 🙄

Straight leg are prob your best bet for trousers and boot

I tried a pair of straight jeans on with boots yesterday, I looked the queen of frump, the fabric gathered on top of my ankle boot with just the foot part of the boot showing, I looked awful, I’ve decided I don’t care how many times it’s said on here skinnies are dated, I’m sticking with them, I’m tall slim and they suit me and I can literally wear any trainer, shoe, boot, heels or flats and they look great.

Totally agree
lazylinguist · 24/10/2021 16:33

But depending on the length of your boots and your tunic, you could potentially have virtually no leg visible, OP.
