Which skincare range?

I used Clarins until about seven or eight years ago when I went to buy both a day and a night cream and the cost was about £160 and I decided that was just too much money.

Since then I have been using Liz Earle. Initially I liked the simplicity of the range but over the last couple of years there have been more and more 'must use' products added and others reformulated.

I have no particular skin problems just normal skin for someone of 56. It could be a bit firmer round the jowls area and I have normal fine lines on forehead and eyes.

Any suggestions preferably at a similar price point to Liz Earle.

The Ordinary is incredible. I'm 52 and my skin has never been better. You just need to work out what you need.
Slackness round the jowls no cream will fix. I use a microcurrent device and that makes a big difference- mine was just the £30 one from Aldi.
I've tried all sorts of expensive creams over the years including Clarins, Clinique. The best moisturiser for me is Garnier Ultralift.

Thank you for all your suggestions. I will take a look at all the brands individually.

I think I have a rather outdated view and still expect to go to a counter and take advice from an assistant. I don't think I would make a first time purchase online but I would happily do so with subsequent purchases after having the opportunity to try a product/range.

Perhaps I need to move forward........

You might find this a useful read. Jo Fairley and Sarah Stacey wrote ‘The Beauty Bible’ a number of years ago and there have been updated versions. They have teams of testers, all over 35, testing a range of products - and I have found their recommendations reliable.

I am also new to adding in actives, and yes it can be quite daunting.

So I have just started out slowly, and bought Vitamin C (its 10% ascorbic acid and 3% ferulic acid) and this is used as an anti oxidant complexion firmer. I am using this in the morning, but only every 3rd morning to start out with.

Then I bought a 0.3% retinol and using this at night, at the moment also only twice a week. But you have to use spf with both of these products.

I am not in the UK, so can't really recommend brands as ours are different here. We do get The Ordinary but its so pricey as we have to cater in the customs charge etc. You do need to be careful with some though, as you cant mix some products. Like peptides with vitamin c for example. I have an eye serum that contains caffeine and peptides, so these cant be used at the same time.

What I did was found a local company and emailed them with my skin type, what my issues are and what I use now. Then they emailed me back a whole routine of what they advised, and how to incorporate what I am already using into the routine. I really like this as they weren't pushy to sell everything in the range to me, so I just ordered these two items for now, but will add in more as I get my head around what everything is for.

I hope you can find somewhere that does this, as it helps a lot. It is quite a minefield. I am 51 and as I live in a hot country my skin has taken its toll, but after using these just a few times, I can see a bit of a different already.

They told me that skin turnover takes 30 days, and it takes two turnovers to see a difference once using the products, so I will probably see the benefits in a few months.

Then I just use my normal cleaners, oil serum and moisturizers that I already had.

There’s an article on Liz Earle and how mature skin changes.
