Can anyone give me an idea of the age of this ring?

It’s peridot, 9ct. Bought very cheaply second hand. I wondered if it was old or not. Thanks!

Well the obvious thing would be to look at the hallmark … what does that say?

ApolloandDaphne · 21/10/2021 16:23

I had one very like that which was stolen in 1985 (maybe it's mine!). I got it in 1974 when I was a bridesmaid at a wedding.

Pinkywoo · 21/10/2021 16:26

If you can get a clear picture of the hallmark I should be able to tell you the date.

Periperry · 21/10/2021 16:43

@Pinkywoo thanks! It’s very worn off and this is x10 magnification. The other imprint says CL &S

CL&S is the makers mark, the date is the little u which means 1985. The other two are quite worn (and I don't have my glasses!).

AdaColeman · 21/10/2021 17:12

CL&S Could be Charles Lyster & Son who worked in Birmingham between 1890s and 1930s. Peridot was a favourite stone of the Victorians.
However, all that does clash with a date of 1985, so more detective work needed!

I think it is a curly V rather than a U @Pinkywoo.

Thanks @AdaColeman

If that's a little anchor to the left of 975, the anchor is the mark of the Birmingham assay office. Maybe have a look at the Birmingham assay office website, you might find out more.

SoupDragon · 21/10/2021 17:51

The 375 means it's 9 carat.

I'm struggling to find the v though.

Is the first one definitely an anchor and what is the one after the 375?

Pinkywoo · 21/10/2021 17:52

If it's a Birmingham mark the only curly v's with that shape of stamp are 1895 and 1995 (bit of a gap there)!

SoupDragon · 21/10/2021 17:54

The v it looks closest to is Birmingham 1995

It's really hard to tell though!

SoupDragon · 21/10/2021 17:58

The first mark could be a crown though with the one after the 375 being a leopard head representing London. I've just looked at one of my older rings and it has a leopards head where the round looking make on yours is.

QuentinBunbury · 21/10/2021 18:00

I think its a right way up anchor and a head then a u or v which makes it 1844 or 1845 Shock

QuentinBunbury · 21/10/2021 18:03

The head shows duty was paid in victoriab times. I think it could be pretty old

MiaFarrowsWheelbarrow · 21/10/2021 18:05

I had one exactly the same in the mid to late 1980's and I lost it in my parent's bathroom a few months after, dropped on the floor, bounced across the shag pile carpet never to be seen again. If you have found it under the floorboards of an ex council house in Yorkshire it may well be mine!!! 😆

SoupDragon · 21/10/2021 18:08

I don't think it's the right style v for 1845 - that's blockier. More "gothic black letter"

SoupDragon · 21/10/2021 18:18

This is the hallmark I'm comparing it to which has Crown, 18, Leopard, t

The t on mine is actually close to the style of your v but v wasn't issued in that font!

Periperry · 21/10/2021 18:45

I do feel like it’s quite old, the jeweller has polished the gold but the setting of the ring around the stone is a bit wobbly.
It reminds me of one my husbands grandma had with a coral sert into it.
I just bought it as peridot is my birth stone and I saw it on my birthday!

This is my artists interpretation of it. This may be more unhelpful than helpful !!

A mystery, hope our MN sleuths can narrow it down further.
I can't, hopeless at hallmarks.

FlibbertyGiblets · 21/10/2021 19:00

Ps ring is very lovely, nice find.

SoupDragon · 21/10/2021 19:07

If you think there's a cupcake, that's probably a crown. 😂

Periperry · 21/10/2021 19:12

@SoupDragon

Yes that was the best way to describe it! Does a crown just mean it’s gold? With anchor meaning Birmingham assay office?

FlibbertyGiblets · 21/10/2021 19:13

Mmmmm cupcakes.

SoupDragon · 21/10/2021 19:13

Yes, the crown goes with the 375 to show the purity.
