Has anyone washed their makeup brushes in the dishwasher?

If you have washed your makeup brushes in the dishwasher did they come out clean? Were they damaged or as good as new?

Nooooo don't do this! It'll be too hot, and very likely won't get deep into the bristles properly. Just wash them in the sink

AutumnLeafy · 19/10/2021 23:47

It will melt the glue!

mrsfollowill · 19/10/2021 23:50

Ha ha - I was contemplating the same a couple of weeks ago- just wash them in the sink with a bit of fairy liquid! mine came up great and had not been washed for about 15 yrs! Shock

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/10/2021 23:51

It takes moments to do it, why risk it?

Also, if the glue goes, you’ll be might even damage your dishwasher.

AutumnLeafy · 19/10/2021 23:54

Just wash them with baby shampoo

15 years? Had they been being used for all that time?
NotMyCat · 19/10/2021 23:57

ShockShockShock nooooooo
I mean if they're cheap and you don't mind if they get ruined...
mine are ££££££ and I would cry! Water gets into the ferrule and loosens the glue and wrecks them. I use dr bronner baby soap and a silicone pad to clean mine, and dry them either hanging brush end down or so the brush end is hanging off an edge to reshape them and avoid water getting in
< goes off to stroke brushes gently >

@autumn leafy - I usually wear make up every day- bit less now I have worked from home for the 18 months! My eyes started to itch a bit so gave everything a good wash - my 18 yo self would be horrified!! Well actually I am seeing it written down Grin . No harm done I am still OK!

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 20/10/2021 00:46

Just wash them properly with baby shampoo in the sink.

ImustLearn2Cook · 20/10/2021 00:56

Thx everyone. They weren’t cheap and they are very nice so I won’t risk it. When I wash them by hand with dishwashing liquid it seems that I don’t get all the makeup out of them. I wash them and rewash them and I can still see makeup coming out in the water. I hoped the dishwasher would be more thorough. But I don’t want to risk ruining them. Thanks again Smile

I haven’t tried baby shampoo. Maybe I’ll give that a go.

I wash them in baby shampoo once a month. Does the trick..mac brushes 5 yr + old.

genericuserneeded · 20/10/2021 01:00

It’s not a dishwasher you need for a more thorough clean, you just need a dedicated makeup brush cleaner. Dishwashing liquid isn’t effective in comparison

BeaLola · 20/10/2021 01:30

Noooo - baby shampoo . I felt bad doing them every month (rather than weekly. I don't wear eyeshadow or liner though so I'm washing foundation & powder brushes

ImustLearn2Cook · 20/10/2021 01:45

@genericuserneeded thx I’ll look into it Smile

MAC makes a really good brush cleaning liquid. I don't wash my brushes as often as I should and it still gets them clean with only one wash.

Aquamarine1029 · 20/10/2021 02:53

Get a silicone brush cleaning pad. They're amazing.

Ah yes I have one of these too. It speeds everything up
violetbunny · 20/10/2021 06:45

Noooooo don't do it! It will ruin the brushes.

Also brushes used with liquids (eg foundation, eyeliner , concealer) should really be washed after every use. You only need a mild soap for this, dishwashing detergent is too harsh.

Products used with dry powders etc can go a few weeks without washing, especially if you use an alcohol -based brush cleansing spray to keep them clean in between uses.

If you're having trouble cleaning your brushes (especially foundation / concealer brushes) and makeup keeps coming out, then perhaps consider if you need to be washing them more frequently?

genericuserneeded · 20/10/2021 18:33

I agree with PP that you should try washing them more frequently too. I try and do mine every 2 weeks, but I have lots of brushes so I have backup options when my faves get oversaturated

I think makeup always goes on better with a clean brush too? Otherwise eg contour or blush looks muddy

PineappleTart · 20/10/2021 18:51

I use a brush cleaner from unicorn cosmetics and it's the best one I've used. Try to keep the ferrule of the brush dry

InTheNameOfAllThatIsHonest · 20/10/2021 19:07

I spot clean my brushes every time I use them with Isopropanol alcohol (www.<a class="break-all" href="https://amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003D8QFR8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?psc=1%29.&ie=UTF8&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-style-and-beauty-4379676-Has-anyone-washed-their-makeup-brushes-in-the-dishwasher" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003D8QFR8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1). It's what many make up artists use. Much cheaper than the MAC pink stuff and works so well. ANd it dries in minutes. Then every now and again I wash them with shampoo and hang them upside down to dry. Spot cleaning them takes seconds and greatly reduces the need to wash them.

NotMyCat · 20/10/2021 19:12

The other thing you can do is buff any colour/powder out on a micro fibre cloth, I do that most days
