Do I save my face or my figure?

I lost a good bit of weight last year, which I was really happy about. I was back in my old clothes, looked and felt good (in clothes) My skin didn't do well with the weight loss though, I had turkey neck, jowls, looked older too. My body was very saggy but at least you can cover that up.
I have slowly gained some weight back which is not ideal, but something I'm confident I can get in top of again.
My face and neck look much better though with the extra weight. So I thinking, do I stay overweight to save my face or lose the weight for a better figure.
I'm postmenopausal so I know my skin will never bounce back. A
size 12-14= nice figure, saggy face/size 16=chubby,better face
If it was all going down, what would you save😱😁

I’ve just realised.
My husband is a twin - always taken great care of himself. Working out and eating well/ vitamins etc. His twin has done nothing, is a diabetic and looks at least 10 years older!
So, the working out hasn’t ruined his face l suppose.

Suppose it matters how you got fat (lack of a better word). Sugar is supposed to make you age faster actually so if they’ve had a massive sweet tooth …..
Delatron · 21/10/2021 07:49

I don’t think the same applies for men.

Babymamamama · 21/10/2021 07:58

I don’t think it has to be an either/or situation. I recently lost two stone of lockdown bulge over the past year. But during that time I also started on HRT. I do honestly believe the hormones have protected my skin. I’ve lost the double chin I had pre weight loss and I’m so grateful not to have got that saggy faced look. People have been telling me I look younger now post weight loss and thank god no extra wrinkles. I think the danger to a woman’s face is when there’s hormonal changes -such as menopause - combined with weight loss and that can be super devastating for the face in term of aging.

I’m surprised a dress size makes this much difference, personally I’d not choose to be a size 16 as that’s quite over weight on me

user512 · 21/10/2021 08:20

Depends on BMI/health. If you're just talking being one end of healthy BMI to the other (as there's a fair bit of give in it) then whatever, but if you are actively settling to be overweight to save your face, that's insane. Prioritise health.

PandoraP · 21/10/2021 08:29

I see Ulrika J mentioned here. She is very skinny, but looks good on TV. I think a lot of celebs are that skinny but use fillers and Botox and maybe Ukrika doesn’t.

The difference in a dress size is around 15 pounds in weight. That could easily push a healthy person into all the co morbidities associated with being overweight; high blood pressure stroke, diabetes, joint issues, even some cancers.

I'm surprised someone would choose to be deliberately overweight in attempt to plump out their face.

Here's a fairly natural looking picture of Ulrika last year. I think she looks bloody fabulous for 54years. I've no idea why people are using her as an example of someone who has "ruined" her face by being slim. Confused

Do I save my face or my figure?
PandoraP · 21/10/2021 10:25

@SmileyClare, I agree about Ulrika. She looks quite natural to me too!!

withlotsoflove · 21/10/2021 10:25

Ulrika has a great deal of sun damage unfortunately.
However, l love her naturalness & think that’s way more preferable to a fake Botox- ed / filled balloon face!

Bluntness100 · 21/10/2021 10:30

I also agree about ulrika, she’s naturally attractive. If someone posted an over weight woman had ruined her face as it was fat and she had double chins they would be slaughtered, but apparently it’s ok to comment on slimmer women.

She hasn't ruined her face by being slim. The issue is years of sun damage. She doesn't look fabulous for 54, she has the skin of someone easily twenty years older.

SmileyClare · 21/10/2021 11:33

Ulrika doesn't look 74 Grin
I was just responding to the people saying "Yeah, it's better to choose your face (be heavier) Ulrika looks gaunt, she's so skinny, such a shame she used to be really pretty" To me she looks like a very attractive woman in her mid fifties and a normal weight?

Ageing is a fact of life, why not embrace it and accept you're going to have a few saggy bits and wrinkles. I really don't agree that settling on being a size 16 is the answer to looking youthful. "Face or figure" is some silly phrase a journo has dreamed up isn't it?

Delatron · 21/10/2021 11:39

I’m hoping HRT might help (not got round to it yet).
Oestrogen is definitely good for plumping up the face. My mum looked great on it.

OssieShowman · 21/10/2021 11:46

Get a really good Collagen. I’m about to start the journey again. I know saggy skin issues did my head in last time I tried.

XingMing · 21/10/2021 11:56

Health trumps vanity, so a sensible height-weight ratio is the best thing for anybody. For the rest, there's artifice and illusion... makeup and tweakments.

Mercurial123 · 21/10/2021 11:57

I was told by my dermatologist there's no evidence collagen supplements work. I use Retin A which gives good results.

Boood · 21/10/2021 12:00

I think this is pretty much bollocks. Yes, if you overdo it and make yourself miserable starving yourself to be a size you can’t naturally sustain, it’s going to show up as a haggard face. But not if you’re a normal healthy weight.

stairway · 21/10/2021 12:05

The above picture of Ulrika is some what flattering. The picture she took of herself after a shower is maybe more realistic. She doesn’t look 74, she is still nice looking but her skin is similar to my Mum’s and she is 74.

PeachMelba78 · 21/10/2021 12:44

I voted face but I want to make it clear that I am still within the recommended BMI levels at 21/22. I am short and used to be a size 6 pre pregnancy, now an 8 and occasionally need a 10. I’m ok with that but for me it’s recognising that I don’t want to lose weight and be super skinny as I think it makes your face look gaunt (I still stick by my original comment re. Ulrika).

workshy44 · 21/10/2021 12:56

I do think there is also an element of people kidding themselves too. Weight is so so aging.
Ulrika does in no way look 74, I mean that is just an asinine comment. She doesn't have fabulous skin , sun damage and she is v v thin which doesn't help but she is still an attractive women
Being slim should not be aging. Being v v thin which is different can be as you get older but so is weight. You may not have a huge amount of lines but overweight people in their 50's in my experience don't look young either.
There is a balance.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 21/10/2021 12:56

I hate to put this out there but the turkey neck etc. may not be to do with weight but may be age!

I have always had a small double chin. I have put on weight and its got a lot bigger, but now I'm losing weight it is still there! I think it might just be an age thing and not something that is going to change a lot. It might change a little but not a lot. So I am learning to live with it.

Things like soft layers around the face, other details to distract from it.

I also think swimming is probably the best exercise I can think of for that whole area. I'm starting next week. If I remember will update on improvements!

MistySkiesAfterRain · 21/10/2021 12:57

Prai Decolettage cream is good too.

withlotsoflove · 21/10/2021 13:13

You can tone that whole area with resistance training. I lift very heavy ( kettle bells) and at 50 don’t have jowels / double chin or whatever!
Something will come along tho/ woman in my family tend to melt as opposed to line/ sag! Grin
