Do I save my face or my figure?

Thecatsbutler · 19/10/2021 21:39

I lost a good bit of weight last year, which I was really happy about. I was back in my old clothes, looked and felt good (in clothes) My skin didn't do well with the weight loss though, I had turkey neck, jowls, looked older too. My body was very saggy but at least you can cover that up.
I have slowly gained some weight back which is not ideal, but something I'm confident I can get in top of again.
My face and neck look much better though with the extra weight. So I thinking, do I stay overweight to save my face or lose the weight for a better figure.
I'm postmenopausal so I know my skin will never bounce back. A
size 12-14= nice figure, saggy face/size 16=chubby,better face
If it was all going down, what would you save😱😁

what is your bmi?

Beautiful3 · 20/10/2021 07:10

I would keep your good health and figure. You can get cosmetic injections called fillers, to plump up your face.

NotAsahmNow · 20/10/2021 07:53

@Namechangeforone

Health or vanity. Hm tough choice
It’s not that straightforward. Being a size 12-14 is still working healthy bmi I can actually due to my height be a size 16 and be within my bmi target !
TheCategoryIs · 20/10/2021 08:23

I think there's a sweet spot you can hit. I lost about a stone and a half and have put it all back on but think the half stone was the crucial bit. Didn't look so gaunt and less visceral fat round the stomach.

Tiramiwho · 20/10/2021 08:25

Figure every time.
I'm the opposite, if I am at my lowest weight my cheeks are slim and less jowly. If I put on half a stone, suddenly I get a flabby face again Hmm ( I can grab the flesh in my fingers ( early 50's post-menopausal )

How do you feel about 'tweakments?' I have had a cosmetic threadlift. I know others that have fillers around the jaw, cheeks etc.
Not for everyone I know x

lazylinguist · 20/10/2021 08:36

Figure, unquestionably. You can't stop your face and skin getting older anyway. The extra weight won't prevent that for long.

Thecatsbutler · 20/10/2021 08:39

Tweakment I love that expression Tiramiwho 🤗
I think the slow and steady approach
to weight loss is the key. Especially as we age.
It's funny how weight loss or gain can result in such different effects on your face too.

Can I say that from my nose up, I really like my face. I love the laughter lines around my eyes. I have no issues about my age. I like being older in fact. I dont think I'd like a turkey neck and howls at any age though🥴

Just get fillers tbh. Maybe add powdered collagen to your smoothies etc. or drink bone broth.

MilkywayMonarch22 · 20/10/2021 08:50

Figure! Face can have work done!

SmileyClare · 20/10/2021 08:55

The worst thing for your skin is to yo-yo in weight; losing a stone or more and putting it back on, losing it again..and repeat.

I'd suggest choosing your health. So aim for a smaller weight loss to take you back into a healthy BMI. Look at it as a permanent change to your eating habits rather than a "diet". Exercise also makes my skin look better, and my general mood.
I'm making it sound easy but it is hard work I know! Try not to deprive yourself, have a little of anything you fancy.

My mum is 77, she has lots of wrinkles but she runs marathons and has an amazing slim toned figure. Everyone thinks she is much younger because she wears bright colours, shows off her figure and is so sprightly on her feet, bouncing around with lots of energy and has a zest for life!
I'm pretty sure she wouldn't appear so young if she was overweight, with aching knees and covering up in baggy cardigans, getting puffed out just walking to the bus stop.

lnsufficientFuns · 20/10/2021 08:58

It shouldn’t ever be a dilemma, figure every time provided you’re exercising and keeping fit.

Your body being healthy and active is all that actually matters in the long term

rhowton · 20/10/2021 09:18

Healthy weight and a facelift...Done

Bbub · 20/10/2021 10:24

Yeah I'd echo what others have said about keep body at its best then consider work on the face maybe?

Actually tbh from a vanity perspective id keep the face looking its best and just deal with a bigger body. But from a health point of view other posters are right that body is more important.

I have the opposite problem, my body looks better carrying a bit of extra weight but my face really takes a hit and I hate my double chin etc.

withlotsoflove · 20/10/2021 10:35

Is the difference between a size 14 & 16 so vast? I don’t know how tall u are op?
Perhaps you don’t need to choose?

There are people who look much younger than their age. Sometimes through extra weight/ sometimes it’s just genes.

I’d choose face with your actual measurements op - dressing to cover bits you don’t like is much easier than going down the tweakment route in the long term. :)

TertiusLydgate · 20/10/2021 10:36

I’d be far more worried about the health risks of being overweight than having less chub on my face.

User7853367 · 20/10/2021 11:10

Figure, it's better for health reasons.

I'm the opposite. I'm 5ft 7 and a Size 14 (losing weight to get to a healthy BMI so about a size 10-12) and my face is all puffy which I think makes me look older. I think people in general look better slim.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 20/10/2021 21:12

I would go for upper end of healthy BMI + weight training and Pilates + retinol.

Delatron · 20/10/2021 23:04

I think Ulrika is also well known for her love of the sun.

I choose body but no yo yo dieting. Try to still eat lots of good fats. Take krill oil, drink collagen. Tiny bit of filler if needed.

I love running and will never give it up but have accepted it may age me somewhat.

whatisthisinhere · 20/10/2021 23:43

I'm 5ft 6 and weigh close to 11 stones, which is the very top of a "healthy" bmi for me, but I weight train and do HIIT workouts. My measurements are 38 26 38, so buy a range of different sizes too. I've had my body fat measured (not always accurate I know) but at 23%, I'm quite happy with it. I think I've found a balance, I don't look too thin, but I'm definitely Italy not fat. I use retin A on my face and eat a Mediterranean diet

workshy44 · 20/10/2021 23:52

I think you can have both but rapid weight loss does cause sagging as you get older. I’m slim but find if I lose a few pounds I look much younger, tighter jaw line etc. I think to maintain both just lose weight slowly and do it via excersize. I think yo yoing up and down wrecks your face so consistent weight maintains the face and body

ShrikeAttack · 21/10/2021 01:25

I think the oft quoted 'face or arse' line is bollox.

Ultimately they're both heading south. Much better to throw such nonsense to the wind and embrace the changes whilst keeping the body as capable as it can be.

If it works beautifully, that's the beautiful thing.

It's not a binary choice between fat body and young face and starving the fuck out of it and cadaverous.

Be strong, strength shows in the face and body.

It doesn't matter how the strength manifests, be it yoga, pilates, weights, swimming, cycling or just fucking about. Strength shows. Not weight or lack of.

I agree. I'm not as slim as I was 20 years ago, but still within the healthy bmi...just closer to the upper range. Grin More curvy and still have a fairly full face.

I do know a few people in my age group (I'm 47) who are very thin and look gaunt facially. It's not a flattering look, tbh.

silentpool · 21/10/2021 01:33

I've accepted that I will weight more, now that I'm older. So I'm Team Face. However, my weight needs to come down and I will reduce that until it shows in my face.

Cameleongirl · 21/10/2021 01:37

Purely anecdotal, but one of my BIL is obsessive about exercise and staying thin. At 53, he quite frankly looks 10 years older than my other BIL, who's 51 and a healthy weight, but far less obsessive.
