Silk pillowcases - do they work?

Chatting to a complete stranger in a queue today who happened to have beautiful skin although I’m guessing she was late sixties. I complemented her and she said she swore by her silk pillowcase. She said she never woke up with that ‘crumpled’ look and her hair was in much better condition since she’d invested in one
Surely it can’t be that simple?

Love mine. I also sleep with a silk cap on my hair. For the first time in my life (47) I don't have to wash my hair every day! My hair is frizz free and really healthy.

KittenKong · 12/10/2021 21:07

I got one because (someone on here suggested it) but realised ok that I sleep with my arm over my eyes (why I wake up needing ironing).

Binglebong · 12/10/2021 21:10

Ooh have you got a link Hermione? Sounds a great compromise.

Luzina · 12/10/2021 21:11

They’re lovely. But any difference they make for skin is fairly minimal. They help with fizzy hair though

Bunny2021 · 12/10/2021 21:55

It makes a huge difference to my hair. I had cotton ones on recently for a couple of weeks and my hair was so knotty and dry but as soon as I switched back to my silk one it was so much smoother. I’m bad with mine and it just gets chucked in a normal wash (and has even been tumble dried!).

Viviennemary · 12/10/2021 22:00

Iv'e been tempted. My hair needs to be washed at least every other day if not every day for it to look ok. I read silk pillowcases stopped hair getting greasy. Sounds a bit too good to be true. And they vary so much in price.

VladmirsPoutine · 12/10/2021 22:04

Amazing for afro hair! With a bonnet of course.

Coffeey · 12/10/2021 22:21

Took about a week to get over the slideyness of it mind. But worth persevering.

2389Champ · 13/10/2021 09:12

Thanks for the replies.

On balance, I think I might give one a go. I have fine hair which I wash every morning as I always wake up with it standing on end and just to get it under control. A silk pillow might actually make a difference!
Plus, anything to look less facially crumpled!

@BuggertheTabloids I think they’re from Jasmine silk

isthismylifenow · 13/10/2021 20:57

I have user silk for many years. Then my mum bought be a satin one and it's just not the same. It's hot where I am and the satin was a bit swaeth, but I didn't find that with the silk. I only handwash mine. Because I put my older one in with the bedding by mistake and it ripped open. It was very well worn so I use the old one as a pillow cover, new one over.

I do have shortish fine hair and I don't battle with it on the morning, I think this has a lot to do with it.

I’ve bitten the bullet and ordered one from John Lewis - due tomorrow. I’ll report my experiences after tomorrow night!

Don't panic if you hate the slidyness of it. You get used to that. My cotton ones will really rough now!

The silk pillowcase has arrived and the first positive thing to report is it can be machine washed at 40c!

I bought one recently and see a difference. I have lots of fine hair with a natural wave. It used to be full of knots every morning that were a nightmare to get out - now no knots and frizz free. I was thinking this week that the creases around my eyes were not as bad as they usually are - never thought it could be due to the pillowcase!

Osrie · 14/10/2021 23:28

My fine hair finds the cotton pillowcases too rough now but concerns are sweating and having to was hair daily. Interested to hear how you get on OP

Viviennemary · 14/10/2021 23:32

Is that the John Lewis one for £45.

2389Champ · 15/10/2021 00:29

It is! I’m about to settle down for my first night with it. I’ll report tomorrow how I got on.

Thanks Champ. I'm definitely tempted. Will order tomorrow I think.

EBearhug · 15/10/2021 01:04

I love my silk satin bedding. I don't know if it helps my hair or skin - I suspect a lot of swimming pool water and rare use of moisturiser probably counteracts any benefits, but it feels nice. I just chuck them in the wash as usual. Mine are from Lilysilk.

Hepzibar · 15/10/2021 06:39

Inspired by this thread I ordered one from Amazon. It came yesterday so used it for the first time last night.
The difference to my hair is really noticeable, feels silkier and not at all messed up - especially at the back.
I'm hoping for same results with my skin but it's too early to look in the mirror!

CactusFlowers · 15/10/2021 07:31

Are they cool to sleep on?

raffegiraffe · 15/10/2021 12:36

Yes. Really good
