Lip Fillers (for 'smokers' lines)

Notonthenewrug · 10/10/2021 00:35

Hi all,

I was just curious of people's experiences with lip filler. Especially if you had them done for 'smokers' lines above the lip. Did they help? Did your lips look natural.

I want to begin by saying that I have never in my life considered lip filler. In honesty (and no offence at all to anyone who has it done) I have never seen a natural looking result.

So 35 and has some fine lines appearing above my top lip. I also have terrible 'smokers' lines if I purse my lips and even when talking. I've never smoked.
I spoke with a dermatologist who does aesthetic treatments and one suggestion was lip filler as it'll stretch the skin and can help these lines.
I'm just wondering if anyone has had it done? I don't want big lips and am terrified of them sticking out. However I'm very conscious of the upper lip lines. I was hoping for filler directly into the lines but have been told they are too fine and filler would cause a bulge.
I've attached a picture of my lips as they are. You can't see the lines above my lips clearly in this pic but they are there. I also seem to have indents below my lower lip Which occur if I purse my lips and don't properly disappear!

DramaAlpaca · 10/10/2021 01:45

Nor can I Confused

malificent7 · 10/10/2021 02:36

What lines? Im 43 and condidering this.

Coogee · 10/10/2021 02:48

I’m glad it isn’t just me that can’t see any lines.

BasiliskStare · 10/10/2021 02:53

I have never had any kind of filler etc so to that extent I cannot comment - however a girl I kew who had been on a beauty course said the best thing you can do for a natural look is just drink loads of water. - everything else is just ( I paraphrase ) papering over the cracks I know a person who has had lip fillers and they don't look natural - & these were apparently well done and expensive.

BasiliskStare · 10/10/2021 02:54

@Notonthenewrug - PS I can't see the lines either.

isthisfishy · 10/10/2021 05:39

I had a really small amount in my lips 0.5ml and it looks so natural that no one noticed although it did smooth out my smokers lines a treat.

Okbutnotgreat · 10/10/2021 07:38

I’m booked in for exactly this treatment. If I purse my lips when I talk or change expression I have about 10 deep lines above my upper lip and my lip crinkles. I’m having 0.5ml of filler injected into the outline only so it won’t plump out my lip volume but means the the lip edge won’t crinkle and the lines should eventually disappear. It’s approx £200 and I consider it very much worth it. The therapist had exactly the same and it looked totally natural to me.

forgotmyusernamagain · 10/10/2021 08:11

I'd save your money and just embrace your gorgeous lips

You don't need it

Notonthenewrug · 10/10/2021 09:58

Thank you for the replies. I know you can't see the lines in that photo but I promise they are there. I don't have lots and they aren't really deep (which is why I can't have them directly filled). I have about 3 above my top lip and some fine ones under my bottom lip. In the pic I've attached, this is what happens if I purse my lips. I don't pout in general life but my lips can look like this a little when I talk (you can see the lines and indents under my bottom lip).

@isthiafishy were your smokers lines bad? I'm wondering if it'll help mine because they are so fine? Also, if you now purse your lips, are the lines less obvious? Did you have just the lips filled? Vermilion border? Or both?

@Okbutnotgreat I this is what the doctor suggested to me, just the border. However, when I read online about trout pout, some articles say that having the border done can give the effect of the lip sticking out. I suppose if it's a small amount of filler and with a professional, maybe it'll be ok. The Dr I'm seeing has won award etc and is expensive but seems to be good. When are you getting it done?

What about botox into your chin area? I haven't had it but went for a consultation and they suggested (not botox but an equivalent) I know that wouldn't help the top lip but just a suggestion!

Notonthenewrug · 10/10/2021 10:14

@mopanitree it's something the doctor suggested, you can use Botox so you can't purse your lips so much. However, I've read mixed reviews and am worried I won't be able to move my mouth properly.

Honestly I think a very good moisturising lip base would work wonders and drinking water.

AuntieJoyce · 10/10/2021 10:20

I have botox around my lips for marionette lines. You have a week or two where you dribble your tea a bit Grin but then other muscles compensate. Works very well on the lines. If you have a deep line a touch of filler can help but a few sessions of botox will stop lines developing more

Blondiney · 10/10/2021 10:34

Aren't those dynamic creases around your lips normal when you pull that face though? It's the muscles contracting, not the skin wrinkling isn't it? Confused

Notonthenewrug · 10/10/2021 10:49

@Dragonpox I used an expensive moisturiser from the dermatologist but it didn't seem to do much and cost a fortune. Also, I've upped my water intake the last month. I even have a water app (I'm rubbish at drinking enough) and have been drinking what I'm supposed to.
Generally skin resurfacing is what I'm told I need, however it's so expensive. I spent £800 on a resurfacing treatment and you need around 3 for results (which aren't guaranteed) and then top ups! Hence why I was hoping for filler.

@AuntieJoyce glad to hear the Botox helps. It's something I would definitely consider but I'm so scared of it going wrong! I've asked for filler in the lines (2 different very qualified drs) and both said no because they aren't deep enough and the skin will bulge.

@Blondiney yes, I suppose people probably do get lines when pulling the expression that I am in the photo. However, I get them just from mouth movement and taking and my issue is that they are indented in my skin and the lines are permanently there.

doadeer · 10/10/2021 13:41

I can't see lines. You have sun spots or hyper pigmentation which you can target. I wouldnt really get down the filler route as it's such a long term commitment too. Also it's not like you walk around with lips in a puckered position haha no one would notice that

BasiliskStare · 10/10/2021 14:08

First picture I think your lips look absolutely fine - indeed nice - I would not bother - but it is your choice 2nd picture - pretty much think anyone , however beautiful could crease their face up and bits of it don't look great

But your choice OP & I wish you well.

From those I know who have done this kind of thing - less is more - Friend of mine had some fillers years ago & came back and asked her DH - can you see a difference in me - He said Oh have you bought a new top ? Now in one way I think fantastic because fillers had not made her look weird , in another way - what is the point when a good night's sleep and lots of water and a new top makes you look lovely. Grin

But if this is something important to you - then obviously your choice.

Bizarrely I have had the 11 lines on my forehead for years. As I get older they are getting less noticeable. ( But that said my eyesight is getting very much worse Grin

Absorbyl · 10/10/2021 15:06

I don't smoke but yes lip fillers do get rid of any tiny lines above the lip, and lipstick and liner goes on more easily.

I had 0.5 ml of filler and even my DH hasn't noticed.

BasiliskStare · 10/10/2021 15:20

@Absorbyl My friend's husband could not tell the difference Grin

The Liposuction he did notice because reasons.

She has given them all up now - but each to their own .

DameMaureen · 10/10/2021 16:59

There's no lines that I can see except for the other photo - perhaps try a good exfoliation treatment for your lips ?

Notonthenewrug · 10/10/2021 17:24

@doadeer I don't think I have sun spots, I have freckles all over my face (although not so obvious in winter). Haha it's more that when I move my mouth and talk, the lines and indents become obvious and I feel too young to have these lines etched in.

@BasiliskStare thank you for the advice. I'd be more than happy for nobody to notice as I don't want my lips enhanced as such, just to make the lines a bit less evident Smile

@Absorbyl did you have just the vermilion border treated? Or the lips? Or both?

Sweetsaremyfave · 10/10/2021 18:11

A friend of mine does filler, it will make a difference and you can have a small amount (0.5) to start with to see how you like the effect

Okbutnotgreat · 13/10/2021 19:48

@Notonthenewrug don’t know if you’re still considering this but I have had mine done now and can confirm it works brilliantly. No one including my husband has noticed but when I look in the mirror I’m thrilled with the result. I don’t have bigger lips I look just like me but just like me pre covid rather than post all the stress of the last 18 months which was showing on my face. Numbing cream was put on and left for 20 mins and then I had 3 or 4 tiny injections on each side and to me the difference is huge and I feel so much brighter and more confident it’s worth every Penny. Just trying not to think about what else I could do now, it’s a slippery slope!

Notonthenewrug · 22/10/2021 20:48

@okbutnotgreat sorry only just seen your response, thank you for replying.
Great to hear you're happy with your results. I want the same as you, something to help the lines without a big difference to the lips.
Did you get just the border of the lips done? Did it hurt?
