Skincare for aging skin

idiotmum · 07/10/2021 19:44

Reaching 45 I need an overhaul to my skincare, I am looking old.
Currently using a mix of Superdrug naturally radiant range (I do not look radiant!) and aldi caviar creams.

Where do I start?

I don’t know but marking place!!
I like the look of the Elemis pro collagen cream but it is so expensive!

niugboo · 07/10/2021 19:56

Go seek out Caroline hirons skincare book or her Facebook group. She covers everything.

Lovewins · 07/10/2021 20:02

The basics are retinol, vitamin C, hylaronic acid and spf 50 every day. Retinol needs to be introduced slowly and gently and not used every night to begin with. Vitamin C is a bit of trial and error to find one that suits your skin. There is a skincare thread on style and beauty that is incredibly informative but you may end up down a rabbit hole for a good few hours reading through!

Geamhradh · 07/10/2021 20:37

Watch Nadine Baggott's YouTube videos.
The only skincare anyone needs is:
Cleanser
AM a vit C serum
PM a retinol
Moisturizer (any you like) Hyaluronic acid adds hydration too but I'm not convinced it does much personally, though lots of people rave about it.
Spf50.

MintyGreenDream · 07/10/2021 20:48

Estee Lauder advanced night repair serum is very good and lasts a long time

idiotmum · 07/10/2021 22:44

Thank you all.
It seems aldi moisturiser isn't going to cut it anymore, I'll check out your suggestions

Aldi moisturizer will be fine to moisturize. All the beauty gurus make the point that beautifully boxed and perfumed though they are, an £80 moisturizer with no particular ingredients other than (cheap to produce) humectants is not going to do anything that that £5 Nivea isn't.

If you're going to spend- on serums.

Girlintheframe · 08/10/2021 07:27

It's not the moisturizer that's the problem. Moisturizer is just to stop water loss, so anything that suits your skin type is fine.
Spend your money on serums, that's where you will see the biggest difference. As pp said retinol and vitamin c mainly. Also invest in a good spf.

palmleavesandfairylights · 08/10/2021 08:07

Anyone recommend a good value vitamin c serum please?

My absolute favourite is Vichy LiftActiv (£20 ish) It's a small bottle though- although vit C oxidises quickly so should be used fairly quickly and kept in fridge) Timeless is good- but I think you need to order from Japan/Korea. I'm using that at the moment.

I've tried but wouldn't repurchase:
The Ordinary- foul foul stuff (IMO like most of their products)
La Roche Posay- love most of their stuff but this is like orange coloured slime
Garden of Wisdom- ok, and cheap, but funny water-oil texture.

The 2 I like are just like a water.

doadeer · 08/10/2021 08:20

Agree with others up thread.

Retinol is best for anti aging. Either through a prescription or you could try Medik8.

I like Oskia or Medik8 vitamin c but they aren't cheap options.

Moisturiser I use an inexpensive one.

palmleavesandfairylights · 08/10/2021 10:14

Geamhradh - thank you! Going to try the Vichy one

LaBellina · 08/10/2021 10:16

The Ordinary has good serums for a low price. Also use SPF every day.

Medik 8 is my absolute fav vitamin C. Really gives you a glow but it is ££
Egghead68 · 08/10/2021 11:01

Botox

BadPlaceJanet · 08/10/2021 11:06

I'm no expert, I have a scattergun approach to skincare and am easily seduced by The Next Big Thing, but one thing that makes a noticeable difference for me is Kiehl's Midnight Recovery. I'm 42 and it gives me smoother and just nicer skin the next morning. It's pricey but you only use a few drops so should last a while.

JinglingHellsBells · 08/10/2021 11:29

IMO retinol is not an everyday basic.
It's for reducing lines and age spots but if you don't have these, don't use it. Same with Vit C.
None of this really works unless you use very high strength and then it's medicinal level.

Best you can do is spf 50 daily, and avoid direct sun, alcohol and sugary foods.

It's no good slapping stuff on your face if you aren't eating healthily with lots of good fats from oily fish, nuts, seeds, fruit and veg.

JinglingHellsBells · 08/10/2021 11:31

I'd say if you are going to spend money, buy and eat avocados, salmon and almonds, several times a week.

I completely agree with this. Also there’s not much information on how your skin will function after long term, daily use of retinol. I have a retinol serum from Yeouth that seems to be working but I only use it once per week. What has really made a difference on my skin is to use a washcloth to cleanse it at night. I use it in combination with a simple foam face wash and my skin looks much better since I use this.
branchlight · 08/10/2021 11:40

I also use a red light mask every day - takes 10 mins. Dr Dray (dermatologist) says it does make a (marginal) difference. I am thinking of home radiofrequency kit too.

Dr Dray also has a useful you tube video on what foods at eat and avoid.

HRT helps apparently. There is actual evidence of this. Loss of oestrogen is aging.

Aldi moisturisers are great, they’re the equal of anything else on the market and compare favourably with the Elemis marine cream - I’ve got both on the go at the moment. Their Laura Mercier knock off cleansing balm is excellent too.

For a truly excellent eye cream Filorga Time Filler is unbeatable, the only one I’ve ever tried that actually does anything. My top tip is facial oil at night, Sisley Black Rose is the best one I’ve ever used but it’s eye wateringly expensive, next best is Neal’s Yard rose oil and the Body Shop Vitamin E is good too.

Thanks for these recommendations.
Is this the eye cream?

m.feelunique.com/p/FILORGA-Time-Filler-Eyes-Absolute-Eye-Correction-Cream-15ml

I was using trilogy rosehip oil, but didn't notice a major difference, or maybe I did and that's why I look so rough again now!
I'll look up the oils you suggest, thanks

Rosehip oil is for early signs of ageing and adding elasticity to dehydrated skin and is good for oily skin.
Sadly, and I (sort of) quote Caroline Hirons here: "after the age of 40, rosehips aren't going to make suddenly look 26".
I love a facial oil, but you probably need a richer one for mature skin. Neal's Yard Rose, or Frankincense are both good.

doadeer · 08/10/2021 16:55

I think eye creams are just tiny expensive pots of moisturiser to be honest.

The Filorga one isn’t. It’s reduced the crinkling on my (very old) eyelids and my laughter lines. And - wait for it - my lashes are longer and thicker since I started using it.

Yes, it’s the one in the Feelunique link @idiotmum. I used to use Elizabeth Arden Prevage and this is 100% better.
