Can you be glam in flats?

Is there such a thing as a pair of comfy shoes that also look dressy and not like something you'd wear to work/going to the shops? Because I can't find anything online.

I would have worn nice heels in the old world, but honestly, after working from home for so long, I don't think I have the stamina to wear heels all night to a posh do, and I can't be faffed with bringing rolled up flats to change into when I could just wear one pair of shoes from the start.

Would love some inspiration, please!

What clothes would you be wearing?

TBC - I have a long-ish floaty black dress which looks a lot like this, and I figured you can't really go that wrong with black...

But I'm also still frantically looking for dress alternatives. I just think the shoes will be harder to sort.

I find Manolo flats are very comfortable as I have quite narrow feet - try eBay or outlet stores
I’ve just bought some grey suede hangsi from vestiare for under £75 -

Ooh, I like those Manolos. If money were no object...!

Of course you can be glam in flats. It entirely depends upon what you wear them with though.

Malone Souliers does brilliant flats.

Worn with wide-leg/pyjama-style silk trousers, a very simple camisole and a Le Smoking style tux jacket, it's a very glam look.

EccentricaGalumbits · 04/10/2021 03:20

I have the ASOS glittery pointy flats posted above and several other similar pairs from there, including nude patent and leopard print faux suede. They are the fanciest flats I've found (that are not Manolo priced!) and I'd wear them to the dressiest of occasions. They're not super comfy but they're ok.

ShrikeAttack · 04/10/2021 03:21

Ah, ok, if that's your dress it depends entirely on your shape and styling to glam it up with flats.

How tall and what size are you?

timeisnotaline · 04/10/2021 03:56

Lots of ASOS examples . I would prefer a one inch heel to dead flat - something like this www.asos.com/au/prd/21946964?acquisitionsource=pasteboard

1.63 m and a top-heavy size 14/16, so you see how heels really help balance me out... I don't think you 'need' them as much if you're tall and skinny (I'm neither).

I'm considering @timeisnotaline's advice of going for something that's not completely flat, but I worry I'll start regretting it 4 hours in...

I think the most budget-friendly suggestion so far has been 'something at ASOS', but it's been lovely to see some 'aspirational' brands that genuinely look nice with no heel/low heel. Perhaps my problem all along has been looking at cheap options - if you throw enough money at something, I now see that it can look really good.

For example, I'd never heard of Malone Souliers, but I quite like these: www.malonesouliers.com/collections/flats/products/marla-black-lace-flats

My go to nowadays is a pair of kitten heels I’ve had for ages. About 4cm heel height. Comfortable to walk in. Similar to these

I’ve always put comfort above fashion. Blush

taybert · 04/10/2021 10:23

You’re a similar height to me and I would struggle in that dress without heels. Oddly I think if it were floor length then some of the flats mentioned would be great but if the hem is that shape then I think it’s tricky.

I was thinking something similar at the weekend watching Strictly- Tess and Claudia were both wearing sky high stilettos which you just don’t see that often now, but for that classic formal glamour I think there are only certain outfits you can pull off with flats.

I don't need to wear that dress. But if I wear something else, it's probably going to have to be knee length as it's hard for me to find something that's long without being too long. (Oh, if only I could sew and take hems up...)

Not sure if knee length will be posh enough for a cocktail/evening gown type affair, especially with flats.

I am with you on sky high stilettos adding classic glamour. I can't walk well in them at the best of times though, and certainly won't last for hours in them.

Love love love the Sophia Webster ones. If I die penniless now, I have this thread to blame!!

Jins · 04/10/2021 13:15

@fashionSOS it’s just over 1.5 inches. I find that height extremely comfortable and can wear them all day. I’ve seen kitten heels much lower than that as well but they are usually 3-4 cm.

With the dress you've chosen I would go with something in nude/blush as close as possible to the colour of your skin, to visually elongate your leg.

ASOS link for demonstration purposes only! I'm sure you can find similar in lots of places.

Orangejuicemarathoner · 05/10/2021 05:34

@BrilliantBulb

You can look expensive in flats: the backless Gucci pricetowns for example. But it’s hard to replicate that heeled look without heels.

Would mules work? There are some glam but marmite Kurt Geiger bejewelled lobster ones. (But the secret leopard cheapie print lover inside of me likes these)

about time women stopped attempting to "replicate that heeled look" then isn't it.

Awful

totally abhorrent

Oblomov21 · 05/10/2021 05:56

Depends what you find comfortable. I find a small heel, ie kitten, very comfy and could wear all day. I think the dress needs a heel / would look much much better with a small block heel, wedge sandal, small kitten heel, than a flat.

taybert · 05/10/2021 07:42

There are many, many “totally abhorrent” things in the world. Wishing the replicate the same sort of glamour conveyed by high heels, (whether that’s a tool of the patriarchy or not) really isn’t one of them.

I think the dress needs to be floor length then most of the flats mentioned here will work. This sort of thing: www.johnlewis.com/little-mistress-ruffled-maxi-dress-navy/p5759597?sku=240299098&size=6&s_ppc=2dx92700066482879438&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gbraid=0AAAAAD2el1w7fLP9KdvCnThSJ1ac9L7MM&gbraid=0AAAAAD2el1w7fLP9KdvCnThSJ1ac9L7MM&gclid=CjwKCAjwzOqKBhAWEiwArQGwaHyA8H_GBhjIu9mW6hMsSeL-Pzeb3--jzJ84d9phD1mwWR5Att1y6xoCGssQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds but it would probably need to be shortened. If you’re ever so slightly on the shorter end of the normal distribution it really is worth finding someone who does alterations locally to you. It increases your options for this sort of thing a lot.

NalPolishRemover · 05/10/2021 08:05

@taybert that dress is gorgeous & I agree that it would look great with some of the flats posted here.

Op I don't think the shape of the dress you've shown will look good with flats, sorry. It's a bit dated with that hemline & unless you're v tall & willowy it will cut your legs at the widest point.

Personally I'd consider a dress like taybert showed & pointed flats under it

I'm 5ft 9" & v v rarely wear heels

SuperStarRose · 05/10/2021 08:56

If the flats are pointed they'll look fine
