WFH what will you wear this winter?

With the energy prices rising my husband has told me to stock up on jumpers for the 2nd winter working from home so I don't have the heating on all day and night.

What are you go to outfits/loungewear for working at home in the winter?

I do have zoom meetings several times a week but we are quite casual even the md shows up in a hoodie sometimes to our zoom calls

I have to do school run as well so needs to be appropriate for that as well.

Ideas?

Thick fairisle jumpers under my Lucy and Yak cord dungarees. So cosy and warm with big socks and slippers. WFH is causal here for zoom calls.

I think layers is the key. I have some thermal T-shirts (from M&S years ago) that I’m going to dig out. I’ve got a few chunky cardigans as our office air con used to be kept on in the winter so it was arctic!

I’d recommend some bootie style slippers so your feet don’t get cold and maybe a throw for your lap.

Pashmina style scarves and wraps are handy and can be thrown off if you get too wam.

I’m really tempted by the cashmere wrist warmers on Turtle Doves as I think they’ll be super cozy.

Chocachocaholic · 03/10/2021 11:33

@MrsLeclerc didn't think about thermal vests etc I think that is a fab idea - shall have a look. Where do you get yours from? Do I need to look somewhere like M&S?
Scarfs and wraps are a good idea and the bootie slippers.

I do have some chunky cardiagans but they don't feel that warm. Do you have some recommendations for the best place for warm knitwear?

@Bipbopbee I would get annoyed with having to unbutton dungarees and pull them all the way down when I go to the toilet in pie Baltic bathroom 😂 I had a knitted jumpsuit last year. Only wore it twice as was too cold every time I had to go to the loo

I wear a fake Oodie (obvs not for meetings) and a heated blanket.

Snailhaterz2 · 03/10/2021 11:37

Uniqlo do great thermal base layers and also, I've just noticed, socks...

I tend to go longsleeved t-shirt,thin wool jumper, thicker jumper/cardigan over the top, then remove top layer when on zoom call.

Leftbutcameback · 03/10/2021 11:40

Last winter I bought some cord L&Y dungarees and also a boiler suit. Both great for wearing with my thermal layers so stay warm. I tend to put a fleece or cardigan on top. For me I look smart if I have my hair and makeup done so I prioritise that, and then staying warm!

Bipbopbee · 03/10/2021 11:48

Yes there is that 😂 I just slip the straps off as quick as possible Grin
I know they’re not for everyone but I do love not having a draughty back or any gaps in clothes when it’s cold!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/10/2021 12:13

Agree with pp re thermal base layers. I have a lot of nice knitwear in alpaca and mohair so wear that with a layer underneath, and Ugg boots as slippers. Knee-high socks under jeans or cords. I’m at the kitchen table and on really cold days had a hot water bottle at my back.

I’m a lecturer so do need to be presentable - now doing 50/50 home and on campus but last year was 100% remote - and agree with pp that having hair and makeup done really helps.

Chocachocaholic · 03/10/2021 12:19

Thanks everyone! Will start looking at thermal base layers! No idea why I never thought of that.

I do always do my make up and hair so good there.

Ugg's as slippers is a good idea.

@Bipbopbee that is a good point about cold backs lol maybe I'll weight up the two!

There are some other good tips too like knew high socks under jeans etc

Thank you!

Layers definitely. 3 thin layers much better than 1 thick. I’ve bought about 5 long sleeved polo neck T-shirts from Biden as my neck and shoulders always get cold and stiff. I layer one of those with a shirt and a wool cardigan over the top. I also have an electric blanket I sit on and always wear sheepskin slippers. I find I get really cold wfh as I don’t get to move around much.

slipperyeel · 03/10/2021 12:22

Boden not Biden!

Caramellatteplease · 03/10/2021 12:28

Thermal under layers. Black velvet lined leggings from primark. Skirt or dress of choice. Woolovers long wool coatigan. Woolovers slippers are also decent and cheaper than uggs

LubaLuca · 03/10/2021 12:29

I've bought some hideous North Face quilted/sleeping bag slippers which I'm hoping will keep my icy toes from dropping off. This is my first winter of WFH, and I'm determined not to heat the whole house every day, because I forbade my husband from doing that last year (I insisted it was unnecessary, feeling a bit less confident now).

We're very casual for zoom etc, but my problem is I don't have many of the staple casual warm things like fleece jumpers and hoodies. I'll probably wear scarves and use a lap blanket, or put my knitted poncho on over whatever jumper I'm wearing and whip it off when it's cameras on. I have plenty of vests etc which I wear anyway; I'm annoyingly cold at the best of times.

Mufflette · 03/10/2021 12:31

Uniqlo heat tech or merino base layers, scarves work for warm and smart. Merino socks and ugg-style boots. Hot water bottle and big fleece blanket wrapped round me if it gets really bad, I just wriggle it down a bit when I'm on a call!

MaverickDanger · 03/10/2021 12:32

Thermal base layers from either M&S or Under Armour and then jogger or jersey trousers, heavyweight tshirt and wool jacket/cardigan from & Other Stories over the top. UGGs on feet.

I wore that in deepest darkest winter & was a bit sweaty Grin

MrsLeclerc · 03/10/2021 12:32

@Chocachocaholic For thermal layers M&S have a nice range this year. I’d also have a look at places that sell cheap outdoors/ski clothes too. Aldi sometimes have them in specialbuys, Sports direct have some here, maybe mountain warehouse too.

I bought a fleece jacket and gilet from Mountain warehouse that are really cozy. I have a chenille roll neck jumper that comes out on the coldest days.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 03/10/2021 12:55

Thermal vest/long johns and lighter layers on top as suggested. I also bought some thermal fingerless gloves as its my hands that tend to feel the cold - so a bit of extra warmth but still able to type easily (and not usually visible on zoom calls!). Also a hot water bottle for resting feet on (still wearing socks or slippers) or on my lap under a throw.

Leftbutcameback · 03/10/2021 13:01

(and I know it's not the point, but I had an oil filled radiator last year which I really needed when it was very cold and windy outside and the walls of my house got very cold!)

nordica · 03/10/2021 13:02

Layers here too. I really like the Uniqlo Heattech range and they last for years and dry quickly after a wash. Heat Holders thermal socks are amazing and I wear them instead of slippers.

I also have corduroy dungarees and big woolly cardigans, and have made myself some fingerless gloves for laptop use. Wearing a hood up really helps too but obviously not a good look for meetings 🤣 Although my boss sometimes wears her dressing gown for our calls!

pastabest · 03/10/2021 13:09

A hot water bottle and a cheap fleecy blanket over your legs works wonders.

Piranesio · 03/10/2021 13:13

Make sure you keep your feet warm. That makes a huge difference

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 03/10/2021 13:14

My hands get really cold, even at home and then I get chilblains Sad Last winter I found that a pair of fingerless compression gloves, plus a pair of cashmere wristwarmers really helped (and made me feel like a character from a Dickens novel!)

LizzieMacQueen · 03/10/2021 13:18

Remember to claim your £6 weekly tax free allowance - it's not much (worth £62 for a basic rate taxpayer) but better in your pocket rather than HMRC as they say. You need to ask them to adjust your notice of coding for 2021/22.

Tesco sell budget thermal vests.

AnaViaSalamanca · 03/10/2021 13:27

my husband has told me to stock up on jumpers… so I don't have the heating on all day and night

I know not the point pf the thread, but wow Hmm

BikeRunSki · 03/10/2021 13:29

Fingerless gloves, wool-rich socks, down gilet
