A coat that does everything?

Lovemusic33 · 01/10/2021 12:40

I have quite a few coats, a rain coat, I big superdry parka coat, a fluffy teddy jacket and a gillet but would ideally like a coat that does everything, something that’s water proof but not too bulky, that’s practical but also a bit stylish. I love my superdry coat but it’s bulky and o can’t really wear it out walking without getting sweaty.

So what’s the perfect coat?

I don't think this exists - a coat that is waterproof and warm is never going to be suitable for a smart occasion for instance. You can only have warmth without bulk if you go for some sort of wool, which isn't waterproof. Coats are just one of those things that you need different ones for different purposes, in my opinion of course!

idontlikealdi · 01/10/2021 13:20

Doesn't exist and I have LOOKEd! I have a wool coat for work, a parka, a proper bum covering waterproof and a massive dog walking coat. And jackets, too many jackets.

I think it's theoretically possible but not found one yet! My Seasalt coat is really waterproof, manages to be warm but also light and non sweaty. BUT it looks like a Seasalt coat! The material is nice. It's really close to being perfect but needs several style tweaks to make it so.

Which one have you got?

I will have a look at sea salt. I don’t really need a dressing up formal coat (as I don’t really go anywhere to dress up), it’s mainly for walking but also for meeting up with friends for coffee type thing 🤣. I hate really thick coats and puffa coats make me look silly as I’m quite small. I think the main thing is that it’s water proof, warm but not too thick.

Possibly something like this www.fatface.com/women/clothing/coats-jackets/cheshire-jacket/963698.html?dwvar_963698_color=phantom&cgid=women-clothing-coats-and-jackets#pagination=true&start=15 though not sure how warm it would be?

I've just done an absolutely massive splurge on a coat from Scandinavian Editions because I am on exactly the same quest as you OP! It's the most expensive item of clothing I've ever bought but I am really hoping it will work for most types of winter outings for many years to justify the price!! It hasn't arrived yet so crossing my fingers... and toes...

Would something like this work for you OP? It's not especially fashionable but it's classic and isn't going to go 'out' of style iyswim. I like the fat face one but it's not at all waterproof and I think you are right that it is unlikely to be particularly warm.

I had an amazing waterproof Maxmara coat years ago, I got rid of it in an idiotic moment, the secret was it was a) super waterproof b) extremely plain.

I have also found a reasonable Seasalt coat, they are smarter than average cagoules.

You need to accept wearing layers rather than letting the coat do all the work.

mrssmiling · 03/10/2021 06:53

Another vote for Seasalt. My Janelle coat is still going strong after about four years…I washed it using the recommended products and it’s fine. www.seasaltcornwall.com/fleece-lined-waterproof-womens-janelle-coat.
I do have other coats, but that’s the one that gets pulled out most of the time - warm, waterproof and not bulky. Perfect for winter walking. Seasalt isn’t cheap, but the quality is consistently good, and coats really do last. Several friends all love their Seasalt coats. I think they offer discounts to NHS/teachers btw.

Plant hunter I think its called?

I'd still recommend it. But it needs a slightly bigger hood imo.

Tinpotspectator · 03/10/2021 08:20

I have a very similar coat to the Scandinavian editions one, from Craghoppers. Also waterproof and with a detachable padded inner part.

Bought at this time of year, last year. It was half price, from an original £200 plus price tag. I think it was £88 actually.

ProfessorInkling · 03/10/2021 08:30

I have a mac from www.protected-species.com/ and it’s amazing, but not going to be warm enough in winter - I messaged them on Instagram and they are bringing out a new winter coat ‘soon’ 🤞🏻

gogohm · 03/10/2021 08:34

I have a 3 in one long line jacket, the bulky warm layer zips out and it properly waterproof- mountain warehouse. Stylish, well around these parts everyone wears waterproof jackets as by the sea and lots of yachty types so fits in with local style but perhaps not London or Paris!

gogohm · 03/10/2021 08:35

Ps if you like seasalt check out trespass who have similar styles but actually waterproof and had 20% off last week when. I bought one

bananagram18 · 03/10/2021 08:38

I’ve just bought a fantastic coat from Zara. Warm showerproof stylish and arms zip off so it can be a gilet as well. Love it

Lovemusic33 · 03/10/2021 08:38

Thank you, I will look at some of the suggestions, I am quite short so ideally I need to try some on as I would like it to be almost knee length but not really long as I do a lot of climbing over gates etc…🤣

For now I’ve ordered a 2nd hand fat face coat from vinted just to wear whilst I’m looking for a new coat, the weathers been awful and I need something for walking.

I've got a cost from Uniqlo that's padded but not quilted, black so work-smart, waterproof. It's a bit of a jack of all trades.

Tractordiggerdump · 03/10/2021 08:55

Didrikson

Jenjenn · 03/10/2021 11:43

I have similar to uniqlo one from tretorn. Properly waterproof and smartish. It wasn't lined though but after searching high and low for a warmer version of the same, I ended up buying a superlight padded coat to wear as an underlayer during winter. It works really well! I do have a waterproof coat that is cut like a smart wool coat from a polish brand that seems out of business sadly. It was 400e 10 years ago, most expensive item of clothing I ever bought!

EvelynBeatrice · 03/10/2021 12:01

I have the holy grail of coats but I doubt that I will get another year out of it sadly and I have never seen anything equivalent in the shops. It’s a long navy coat with a hood lined with black fur which is also carried round to trim the edges right down the front. Smart trench coat like but straight up and down no belt. Completely waterproof, light, cosy and smart. Looks great with black or navy for work and likewise good with casual stuff atweekend. Was a John Lewis one four or five years back. They also had it in black. Wish I had bought two now!

EvelynBeatrice · 03/10/2021 12:03

There seems to me a kind of genius or obtuseness to the incompetence in retail design now. Those coats sold out as soon as they appeared on shop floor/ online, but did they bring them back the next year / no.
