London footwear

Live rural coastal, but need to go to London for a weekend, galleries, restaurants etc. Haven’t been to London or done much shopping since pre-COVID - what footwear are mid 30s mums wearing? (Can’t do white trainers, would never wear them at home due to mud).

Literally all the mid 30s Mums are wearing Stan Smiths and Vejas. But luckily you don’t want to wear white trainers.

I would wear Doc Martens but you don’t want to be breaking them in on a visit. Any biker/chunky boot would be fine including for dinner and the old rules of dressing like you don’t care still apply. But of course you have to really care about your not caring aesthetic 😉

I usually take 2 pairs for a weekend. It’s generally in winter so I take a pair of very comfortable Chelsea boots and something akin to a trainer . I couldn’t wear just one pair for so long. But I am ancient.

minipie · 28/09/2021 16:50

Wear whatever you’ve got that’s comfy! There isn’t a dress code at the door…

LaPampa · 28/09/2021 17:02

Thanks all. I just feel after beach living for nearly two years everything I’ve got isn’t very “city” …

I am wearing these fabulous Noho boots from Saint & Sofia

I am a size 14-16, 5ft6 and have size 7 feet. DMs just make me feel too butch and unfeminine. However these boots are smaller somehow, easy to get on and off (side zip!) and have the lightest sole and softest leather imaginable. Got them for Christmas last year and have just started wearing them again now the weathers turned.

TuftyRusty · 28/09/2021 17:14

When are you going? It’s rainy and grey in London - I’m back in DMs today. I think if I was doing a city break in autumn I’d wear flat biker, lace up or chunky Chelsea boots - good for daytime but can also be dressed up a bit/go with dressier clothes for evening.

trainers & boots

Lottapianos · 28/09/2021 17:18

Wear your comfiest shoes, and don't give it another thought. You will see literally every type of footwear in London and no one will give the tiniest fig what you're wearing on your feet. Got to have comfy feet though

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 28/09/2021 17:24

I am wearing these Chelsea boots right now, although I also have my eye on these Nikes.

Literally every other thirtysomething mum in London is wearing Vejas right now.

LaPampa · 28/09/2021 17:30

@TuftyRusty October so could be any weather really!

Love those S&S boots but I already have a pair of redwing boots which are super comfy so maybe those will suffice. Maybe the shoes aren’t the issue, just a general sense of frumpiness :)

LaPampa · 28/09/2021 17:31

@BuffySummersReportingforSanity yeah I keep being told to buy Vejas but they are too white / not waterproof enough for my usual mud filled school run

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 28/09/2021 17:34

Maybe stick with boots then? Black Chelsea boots are a classic and a chunky style would be current and should be reasonably comfy.

ILoveShula · 28/09/2021 19:11

If you wear chelsea boots, break them in first.

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 28/09/2021 19:33

@Doglicks thanks for the recommendation, just ordered these S&S boots in the crocodile - been looking for comfy flat chunky boots

corlan · 28/09/2021 19:36

This season I am mostly wearing clown shoes.

crumblebug · 28/09/2021 19:37

What do you normally wear? Just wear them!

Timetable99 · 28/09/2021 19:42

London has a reputation for being somewhat glamorous but tbh most of us walk / Tube around so much daily and you can't be doing with uncomfortable shoes while trekking around to that extent. Maybe that's why nights out are more casual in terms of typical dress compared to other urban areas where everything is closer together. Go for comfortable boots that'll get you from the country to London easily.

TheCategoryIs · 29/09/2021 10:52

Anything that suits your outfit/style and is comfortable is what goes in London. The less thought it looks like you’ve put in, the better! Athleisure is very common, COVID has made everything even more casual than it was before.

Agree with first PP about ubiquitous Stans and Vejas, often worn with a flowery dress and denim or biker, or same but dress swapped for a jumpsuit.

THEDEACON · 08/10/2021 18:26

Noone but no-one will care what you have on your feet

Brute · 08/10/2021 18:53

Who is going to Hull Fair.??
Do you think it should be on.??

Like you I live in a rural, seaside place. When I go to London or any other city (and I haven't for a while) I always spend on what I think will be appropriate then find that there is every style and state of dress to be seen. Don't buy anything that you won't wear at home and make sure they are comfy.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/10/2021 19:57

I'm going in a couple of weeks. I'll be wearing these boots and these trainers I think.

It's London. There are 8 million people living here. We don't have "a style".
nordica · 08/10/2021 21:03

These threads always confuse me because I literally see every possible type of shoes, clothes, bags etc. in London every day. Confused Unless you are attending a particular event, then just wear what you wear normally.

For what it's worth, my footwear choice is usually guided by the weather and my personal preferences.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 09/10/2021 08:41

These are so comfy OP, you can walk to yours heart's content without having to break them in. www.gaborshoes.co.uk/womens-c1/trainers-c5/heather-womens-casual-trainers-p38678?attributes[1]=24565&gclid=CjwKCAjwndCKBhAkEiwAgSDKQQ5QqOAwIkHVDqUPk255cuFNNhDCmrDOIMHCtR7clBmy_9xNsHr0-xoCeqEQAvD_BwE
