London footwear

Live rural coastal, but need to go to London for a weekend, galleries, restaurants etc. Haven’t been to London or done much shopping since pre-COVID - what footwear are mid 30s mums wearing? (Can’t do white trainers, would never wear them at home due to mud).

Mums in mid 30s!? We don’t have a bloody uniform! Whatever you want?

PaleGreenGhost · 09/10/2021 13:50

As a born n bred Londoner, I'd say the joy of this city is that you can wear what the hell you want! It's such a melting pot of cultures. I had the shock of my life when I arrived at my university city to be treated like a weirdo for wearing trainers and a coat on nights out.

Not that you shouldn't get yourself some new footwear for your trip. But get something that makes you happy.

PowerNap · 09/10/2021 14:40

@Palegreenghost as another born and bred Londoner, I agree completely. The uniformity and conformity in my university city was also a shock to me. It felt very constraining and self conscious.

HoneyDewMel · 09/10/2021 14:50

It's cold and wet now so we're all wearing our boots. You can't go wrong with chunky black or brown Ankle boots with laces.

HoneyDewMel · 09/10/2021 14:53

If you're not really stepping outside much then trainers is fine ie if you're on the tube, bus and indoors a lot. White trainers are more for the summer really imho but we're in that in between stage where anything goes till the weather decides otherwise

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/10/2021 15:27

Don't buy new shoes if you're wanting to walk a lot. You need something that you know will be comfortable.

theDudesmummy · 09/10/2021 15:35

I am a Londoner who lives elsewhere now. I am in London for the weekend. It has been a glorious day weather wise and I walked around Regents Park and the zoo in the same clothes I wore on summer beach holiday ie beach sandals, cropped linen trousers and a t-shirt. I saw people in everything from sports gear to shorts to flirty dresses to full-on winter coats and scarves. Wear what you like!

theDudesmummy · 09/10/2021 15:36

Floaty not flirty dresses! Although some were certainly ideal for flirting in, very pretty!

Gonnagetgoing · 09/10/2021 17:40

No one cares what you’re wearing on your feet in London… I live in outskirts.

But if you’re going to be busy, on and off tubes, walking etc then a comfy trainer (Nike internationalist is nice being mostly black) or whatever other colour apart from white if you don’t like white.

Boots - Chelsea are great but ensure you break them in, or any other footwear. It can be absolute hell wandering around central London or any other big city with painful feet with blisters.

JinglingHellsBells · 09/10/2021 18:17

Most women wear trainers. or comfy flat boots.

Even women working in the City commute in trainers (and have a box of smart shoes under their desks!)

BrickingIt44 · 24/10/2021 20:08

Weird responses on this thread. There's nothing wrong with wanting something a little smarter than you'd usually wear for a trip to the city. 'Wear what you'd always wear'. Like she's going to want wear muddy wellies in Harrods Hmm Though at least that might actually make you look like you're old money.
Try heavenly feet - they do boots rather than trainers but they're really comfy.

YoungGiftedPlump · 24/10/2021 20:18

Based on this week-flat or crepe sole Chelsea boots or dms

BrickingIt44 · 24/10/2021 20:20

Just looked at their website and actually Heavenly Feet do do trainers, some quite nice non-white ones too

notoldjustpastyoung · 24/10/2021 23:58

surely it's not fashion and trend you're looking for. A weekend pounding the streets and museums etc. Trainers every day. There's some great flashy ones around, look in M $ S or Primark.

SmallProvincial · 25/10/2021 00:03

I swear by Camper Chelsea boots.

(I live in London, though I can't promise I'm not frumpy)

ambereeree · 25/10/2021 11:35

Flat boots or trainers? Especially if you are walking or getting the tube/bus. Where whatever you like nobody really looks at anyone else

ambereeree · 25/10/2021 11:37

Should be wear whatever you like.

Milomonster · 25/10/2021 12:00

Why don’t you wear what you are comfortable with? I’ve live in C London and couldn’t tell you what mums are wearing. It really doesn’t matter.

GlomOfNit · 25/10/2021 19:23

Blimey, last time I went to London (a few weeks ago) I wore Converse because I wanted to walk a bit and it wasn't likely to rain. Time before that (summer) I wore my running trainers which luckily aren't all mud-splattered because I can't remember the last time I ran Grin because we were going to do one of those phone-based treasure hunt/trail things and what with that and avoiding the Tube, we ended up racking up about 24,000 steps so I'm glad I wore trainers! (and so did the London-based friend I met up with.)

I do know what you mean though, OP - even if we know 'London' is a diverse place with no dress code, I do a bit of a review of what I can still fit into on my rare trips in from my semi-rural, small-town existence. Mentally shelving the Fat Face/Seasalt (shurrup, I'm getting old) uniform I tend to wear because I have this feeling it's going to mark me out as a day tripper immediately. But even if it did, so what?
