They seem to be everywhere on the John Lewis website etc ... and on the gift link email they sent me. What is the current opinion?

"lower social orders"

noddyholder · 06/12/2007 12:02

They are well made etc but all the chavs love them.Brighton is awash with them.

fleacircus · 06/12/2007 12:02

I assumed that was the implication of 'chav'. Perhaps I'm wrong, I seem to have a chip on my shoulder this morning.

Hulababy · 06/12/2007 12:07

I have one. I like it. It's just a very simple bag for day use though and wasn't particularly expensive. I don't really do bags - never really need to have one with me for evenings. I don't get the fascination with handbags, or shoes for that matter!

Certainly don't class myself as "chav" however

I have a Texier bag - they do women's lap top bags.

ChopsterRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 06/12/2007 12:37

I have one too - not chav at all!

I agree with the description that they were rather middle class and now becoming popular with younger women. I'm only 29 fgs! Mine is black with a leaves design on it, and I have the leaves umbrella too, which I adore. Did have a purse, but that got stolen on hol.

I think they are lovely, and go for it if that's what you like, regardless of what other's think.

ChopsterRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 06/12/2007 12:37

others think. What is the matter with me! Twice in two days now.

pagwatch · 06/12/2007 12:44

I couldn't stand them. And then my lovely DS bought me a purse and a wallet so i love them now (of course!) and produce them with a flourish and not even a smidge of

fircone · 06/12/2007 12:48

for chavs who think that going to John Lewis means they're posh

ggirlsbells · 06/12/2007 12:50

MyEye I have that one ,have had it for years .Very useful .

Don't like the dog/flowery ones.

Hate those Kipling bags..wtf are they about?

Roobie · 06/12/2007 12:52

I have one - am questioning folk's definition of 'chav' - surely not? Just bog standard handbags aren't they?

southeastastra · 06/12/2007 12:52

chavs round here wouldn't be seen dead with one

bagpuss · 06/12/2007 13:11

OMG I didn't know whether to open this thread. IMO they are middle class and safe. I have two bags - a tan shoulder bag and a black across the body one. They are both nice and functional and well made. There has been only one moment where I regretted owning the black one and that was in the Ladies' toilets at John Lewis last christmas. I was washing my hands I noticed 3 other women in there with the same bag . My mother has just given me the money to buy myself a small grab bag for Christmas but maybe I should just get something else?

bodiddly · 06/12/2007 13:12

I didn't realise this was such an emotive subject! Thanks for the links to the other companies I will take a look at them.

Anna8888 · 06/12/2007 13:16

I'd never heard of them but opened Iota's link... No, no, NO not nice at all.

ruddynorah · 06/12/2007 13:16

they're just boring department store handbags aren't they? they say frump to me rather than chav.

bagpuss · 06/12/2007 13:17

bodiddly it isn't emotive, I was referring to being classed as a "chav" .

expatinscotland · 06/12/2007 13:21

They seem rather twee, IMO.

tissy · 06/12/2007 13:28

I've got a Radley briefcase, have had it several years though, and I wouldn't be without it. Soft leather, very capacious and still looks smart. However, it is very plain, and not decorated with twee little dogs!

oh fleacircus how well put - hate the label "chav" !!!

TellusMater · 06/12/2007 13:34

Is imagination good in a bag?

The across the body ones seem harmless enough. Only ones I've seen in RL. The one on the link was, um, not to my taste...

expatinscotland · 06/12/2007 13:38

Of course, Tellus!

Accesories make an outfit!

A bag, jewellry or scarf, sunglasses when the seaon is right, shoes, tights, belt, etc.

This is the way to be creative without breaking the bank and give that extra panache.

That damn wee dog never coordinates well with the rest of the bag or with whatever the bearer is wearing, so it just sticks out as, 'Look at me! I am twee!'
