Help! I’ve realised I dress like a toddler.

Please try not to laugh at me!

I think I dress too child-like. On an average day, for example, I’ll have on a rainbow print t-shirt, some girlfriend jeans rolled up, some red converse, and an unzipped hoody or cardigan. I also have a bright yellow rain jacket that I love but with everything else maybe I look like a giant toddler?!

I would like to look a bit more chic but also still comfy and like ‘me’.

@Lavenderpillow I think you sound delightful
You are being you ! Relax and enjoy it
If you want more chic for certain occasions ask a sales assistant for help , I would say
" you can see my style but I need an outfit for such and such , what can you see me in ? "

Then you will still be you .. which sounds absolutely fine to me

Saladovercrispsanyday · 23/09/2021 09:12

What made you suddenly think this?

Disfordarkchocolate · 23/09/2021 09:15

Honestly, I think that all sounds fine. I wouldn't look at you and think 'giant toddler'. I love clothes that make me smile, that are a little fun. I think life it better when you you do the little things that bring you joy.

LOVEMEIMNORMAL · 23/09/2021 09:15

Don't change

LOVEMEIMNORMAL · 23/09/2021 09:17

Also you've basically described what I'm wearing today 😂

Invisimamma · 23/09/2021 09:17

Wear what you want. Life's too short to not get joy from what you wear.

Unless you're dressed inappropriately for work or a funeral or something, anything goes. Your style sounds realxed, funky and comfy, I wouldn't immediately think 'toddler.'

Mankyfruitbowl · 23/09/2021 09:19

You sound just fine as you are! But if you want to feel more "chic/ grown up" I'd suggest maybe try keeping the bright colour palette but changing the shapes, so for example a bright midi skirt with a clashing slouchy hoodie or jumper. Look at whowhatwear for inspiration - they've been championing the bright colour trend lately.

Puffalicious · 23/09/2021 09:20

I think you sound fabulous. So much better to be you than have a long face, uncomfortable in designer, on-trend chic. Today I have denim dungarees and a striped tshirt on with trainers. I'm meeting sister to go shopping for her birthday. She'll be glam and withering of my toddler look: don't give a shit.

CampervanQueen · 23/09/2021 09:20

Sounds fine to me. Today, I am wearing a Harry Potter t-shirt and rolled up girlfriend jeans. I will add trainers when I go out (can't do converse - my feet are too short and wide!) and a hoody when I get cold.

I am 43. Do I care? Not a jot.

ShowOfHands · 23/09/2021 09:21

My children say I dress like a toddler at least once a week.

I live in dungarees (with increasingly ridiculous prints, ladybirds today btw), rainbow stuff, stripes, funky DMs, every colour under the sun if I can manage it, many home knitted cardies and hats and lots of tie dye.

Why the fuck would I dress in things other than those I like?

Similar ! My friend will ask me to meet up for a mooch round shops and lunch yet will be in stilettos and in agony within 10 mins I'll be in my fake sketchers and can keep going forever
SprayedWithDettol · 23/09/2021 09:33

Dress how makes you feel comfortable. If you want bright, adult styled clothes have a look at Anthropolgie. Whilst not always chic (perhaps more boho) they have bright fun clothes. I’ve just seen this skirt that I’m thinking of getting.

Help! I’ve realised I dress like a toddler.
SprayedWithDettol · 23/09/2021 09:33

Anthropologie ffs

dontgobaconmyheart · 23/09/2021 09:34

It sounds fine, everything you describe is stuff you see on people out and about anyway. Jeans a t-shirt and trainers isn't exactly out there. The only differential would presumably be lots of colour - which is also fine. If it makes you uncomfortable then change it up, if it doesn't then carry on wearing what you like, whether that's bright colours and prints or whether it's business wear.

What you're wearing isn't indicative of fundamentals about personality. Wearing dark corporate outfits hardly means you are uptight and have no sense of fun, wearing bright colours doesn't mean you're a better, more fun, optimistic more likeable character. They're just clothes.

Itsbeen84yearss · 23/09/2021 09:36

I think you sound great. I think it’s lovely to see people in colour

OchreBlue · 23/09/2021 09:39

I agree, dress to make yourself happy, sounds like a lovely style. Ever since having my kids I've began intentionally dressing 'like a toddler'.
I suddenly realised when I hung their beautiful brightly coloured dresses and soft organic cotton bright stripey clothes on the washing line then hung up my miserable navy and grey things I realised I didn't even like my clothes I just thought I was meant to wear them as an adult. I look for colourful cotton dresses wherever I go now. Sounds like you've already got it sorted.

OnwardsAndSideways1 · 23/09/2021 09:46

How have you only just noticed this?!

I don't think you probably look todder like at all, but it's quite funny that you have only just noticed you wear very bright clothes.

Go with the style you love, full stop!

TheMarzipanDildo · 23/09/2021 09:48

I think your style sounds cheerful.

YesIcan3 · 23/09/2021 09:49

Omg I needed a laugh! I'm dress in a star top and leggings today and splash paint converse Grin

Peanutsandchilli · 23/09/2021 09:53

What's life for, if not for having some fun along the way?! I'll bet you look great. We need more people like you in the world.

DopamineDresser · 23/09/2021 10:04

I'm with you all the way (see username) - the brighter the better! Bright, bold colours make me happier on a daily basis - somehow I just feel more cheerful in lairy colours!

Life would be so dull if we all dressed in muted colours

If you don't know it already, take a look at Sugarhill Brighton (brace your wallet first!)

Lavenderpillow · 23/09/2021 12:41

I’m glad people have said what I wear is ok! I love jolly colours and rainbows etc. Funnily enough I was just on a secondary school tour and another mum had funky colourful trainers and stuff on, like what I would choose, and I thought ah ok I’m not the only one then!

@DopamineDresser oh bloody hell that shop has designed everything for ME! My bank account is ruined!!!

Indigomint · 23/09/2021 12:50

If you genuinely want to change the way you dress you could go with a splash of colour mixed with greys or creams.

You seem to love what you wear though , and that's what matters imho. When I see people wearing bold colour and pattern it makes me smile , so please carry on if you are comfortable with your style.

You and me both! Love a nice jumper with a funky print, also their dresses are right up my street too. Always get compliments when I wear their stuff.

Good luck!
