Help! I’ve realised I dress like a toddler.

Please try not to laugh at me!

I think I dress too child-like. On an average day, for example, I’ll have on a rainbow print t-shirt, some girlfriend jeans rolled up, some red converse, and an unzipped hoody or cardigan. I also have a bright yellow rain jacket that I love but with everything else maybe I look like a giant toddler?!

I would like to look a bit more chic but also still comfy and like ‘me’.

@ShowOfHands

My children say I dress like a toddler at least once a week.

I live in dungarees (with increasingly ridiculous prints, ladybirds today btw), rainbow stuff, stripes, funky DMs, every colour under the sun if I can manage it, many home knitted cardies and hats and lots of tie dye.

Why the fuck would I dress in things other than those I like?

Where do you get your dungarees? I really want some but can’t find any here as everyone is painfully chic (Italy), and as my parents are coming to visit me soon from the il I would love to ask then to bring some out but don’t want to send them traipsing around loads of shops to find them

Great skirt @SprayedWithDettol - love Anthropologie. Seriously op, wear what makes you happy. You sound ace to me! I am late forties and have no fucks to give when it comes to others views on how I look!

ShipshapeShore · 23/09/2021 13:47

Oh flipping heck, I need all those toddler clothes from Sugarhill!!

I came across a great quote recently. Stay in your lane. You can waste so much time thinking about what you think you "should" be wearing/doing/achieving but it's better to focus on what you actually want to do and who you actually are. So carry on as you are ☺.
(Came from Gemma Bray's book, The Organised Time Technique.)

OP, I was just browsing the guardian and saw this. Turns out you're actually a style guru.

I get what you mean. When my dd was little I used to love dressing her in colourful pinafores with contrasting tights. So cute. But then when I put on my own colourful tights and dresses I felt a bit silly. So
I stopped wearing them. But maybe I’ll start again as she has now entered the ‘leggings and a t shirt’ phase, so we won’t be matching!

Lavenderpillow · 23/09/2021 13:56

Yay! I’m in fashion! Grin

So, my fellow bright colour fans, where do you all get your clothes from?

OP posts:
TheHound86 · 23/09/2021 14:00

Lucy and yak. I wear their clothes nearly every day.

ShrinkingViolet9 · 23/09/2021 14:14

Today, I am wearing a Harry Potter t-shirt and rolled up girlfriend jeans.

I don't understand the need for the term "girlfriend jeans" or "girlfriend jumper". I assume "boyfriend xxxxxx" was coined to describe a garment cut or sized for a bloke, but intended to be worn by a woman.

So why "girlfriend jeans" or "girlfriend shirt" or whatever?

MrsVeryTired · 23/09/2021 14:22

Your style sounds fab! I have a friend who dresses similar and I love her style.

The overall look is not for me but I do love a funky t-shirt and unusual footwear, but pair it with black or denim everything else. I am often envious of the styles of childrens shoes (and wish my feet were smaller! Grin)

Twilightstarbright · 23/09/2021 14:33

GalaxyPostcard · 23/09/2021 14:35

I dress like this and I think it's fab. You probably look great, try not to worry!

Lasttimeneveragain · 23/09/2021 14:37

You clearly associate with well dress toddlers. In my house they wore spiderman costumes or Disney dresses on the school run with wellies and a puffa jacket.

MrsVeryTired · 23/09/2021 14:51

Haha @Lasttimeneveragain maybe thats what Bjork was doing with her style choices Grin

Anon08 · 23/09/2021 14:56

I took it as a huge compliment when a 5yo girl told me she loved my jumper - it was a sweatshirt with a unicorn. Life is far too short and serious!

Nanny2many · 23/09/2021 15:06

I have a friend who dresses the same. I love it. She buys quite classic Tailored shapes in bright colours. So the silhouette is tidy and sophisticated but the colour and personality still shines and she still looks like a grown up.

imnottoofussed · 23/09/2021 15:11

i'm pretty similar although maybe not as brightly coloured, generally wear t shirts, hoodies, jeans and trainers. Today it's a navy M+S straight fit t-shift, joules girlfriend jeans rolled up, black vans and a green H&M hoodie.

My whole wardrobe is t-shirts, hoodies or sweatshirts and jeans.

Most of the time i'm happy with it, occasionally I will hanker to make changes and dress more grown up/smarter/fashionable. I'll buy one or two things then realise I prefer my comfortable clothes and also I'd need a lottery win to buy enough replacement clothes for a whole new look.

LowlandLucky · 23/09/2021 15:14

Please please don't change, be you

SylvanasWindrunner · 23/09/2021 15:14

I love Sugarhill Brighton. Toddlers have the best clothes - funky colours and patterns, just really cheery stuff.

Ooh! I like the one in the middle. I would wear that. Wear can I buy it? As long as it doesn’t break the bank Grin

@Lavenderpillow Op, what you wear sounds fine! I’m often told that I look chic or put together. Even on non-uniform day at school, I used to be asked if I’m going to an interview Blush

But when I’m at home or out and about, I wear all sorts of bright colours. I am just not allowed to dress like that at work as it’s not very professional Hmm

But I do find loopholes with my mismatching colourful socks, laptop decal, three tiny colourful ear studs on each ear etc. My office has plants but I do have office accessories that are an array of different colours, but you’d only notice if you open my desk drawers or my filing cabinet. It’s not too bright or too garish, just tastefully done.

Sometimes, you just need to find what works for you.

Help! I’ve realised I dress like a toddler.
KirstenBlest · 23/09/2021 15:56

I dress like a toddler too.

Lucy & Yak, Plumo type clothes. Cocoon dresses, pinafores.Bright colours. Clumpy type shoes.

I saw some people yesterday who made me look like I dressed very drably. One was I think a young teenager or older pre-teen but from the back could have passed as an adult, and the ensemble made her look like Grayson/Clare Perry on a bad day.

Ughmaybenot · 23/09/2021 16:06

Ah don’t change. You like what you wear and it’s clear bright colours make you happy. My sister dresses a little ‘like a toddler’, lots of bright colours and dungarees and child-like shapes/styles, if you had to put a label to it. She’s happy, and it shows.

QueenofBrickdon · 23/09/2021 16:12

I've love Sugarhill and have loads of stuff from there. I always get compliments at work ( in a school, from 5 year olds 😂).

Maireas · 23/09/2021 20:34

Sounds fine to me. I love colour.
A lot of women round here just seem to wear black leggings, Veja trainers and grey hoodies. It's like a uniform. A black puffa jacket when it's cold.
