Looking for a REALLY warm coat. Ideally slight stylish but happy to sacrifice that for the sake of warmth. It does need to be hip length, not long line though.

Patagonia or Keela.

Pancakeorcrepe · 23/09/2021 15:47

There’s so many lovely brands! Please don’t go for Canada Goose. They really are a horrible company and there are fabulous alternatives out there.

FloconDeNeige · 23/09/2021 16:27

Those getting themselves worked up over Canada Goose; I do hope you’re all vegan? Otherwise quit with the hypocritical preaching.

Also, the company will stop using fur for trims as of the end of this year.

Nothing hypocritical about pointing out extreme cruelty. You are using it as a deflection from the indefensible.

I always feel the cold. Last winter I bought a Rab coat - more than I’d usually spend on a coat, but keeps me really warm! Got complimented on it too.

Rummikubfan · 23/09/2021 17:50

I bought a puffa from a brand called Mackage which is a Canadian brand. It was obscenely expensive but the warmest coat I have ever worn and stylish, I don’t feel a frump wearing it which I do in most coats

Lived in Scotland for years and finally bought a NF Arctic parka last year. Very warm and cosy, and doesn't feel too bulky. Cost per wear over the years should make it affordable, it's expensive. Really hope I fit into it after this past year!

Ricekrispie22 · 23/09/2021 20:09

Thanks for all your recommendations. I’m looking in to Superdry and Tog 24. Maybe North Face too. What’s the sizing like for these brands?

Rab jackets are really good and made in the UK. Also another UK based company, PHD make technical clothing suitable for extreme weather. They can tailor make to fit exactly.

Timeandtune · 23/09/2021 21:35

I got a lovely woollen pea coat from Gloverall. It’s toasty warm without being bulky.

Patagonia and at least it's an ethical brand

mumofthemonsters808 · 23/09/2021 22:07

After many years of buying stylish Winter coats and making do with my old anorak for the rainy days, just because I dislike anoraks on me. I’ve finally invested in a new one, having walked my grubby dog in my anorak, I couldn’t possibly put it on for work It has mud stains on it and tonight noticed it is ripped and has the stuffing coming out.

So I have a NF Parker for the dirty, dark, torrential rain days. This alone means it will be the driest, mildest, Winter on record and it will sit in my wardrobe and I’ll wish I’d not spent all that money.I’m planning on stitching my dog walking anorak because I have no money to upgrade.

I’ve tried it on and I don’t really like it on me but as I said, I don’t like anoraks in general. Some people look good in them, I’m not one of them.

Delatron · 23/09/2021 22:07

Rains puffer jacket. I spent years trying to find the holy grail of very warm but also waterproof. This is the coat of dreams..

PeriChristmas · 23/09/2021 22:20

Didricksons..

PeriChristmas · 23/09/2021 22:21

@FloconDeNeige

Canada Goose - but there are questions about how ethical they are.

I’ve had mine a few years now (DH too). We live in a Swiss ski resort and it was -17C last winter. Never been cold in that coat. If it’s higher than around 2C outside then I’m too hot in it!

Noooo to the dog hair trim!!!!
Toomuch2019 · 23/09/2021 22:34

Bought a fantastic long puffa type one from Uniqlo last year which is AMAZING! So warm
and duvet like!

ISpyCobraKai · 23/09/2021 22:36

Both my Superdry and Merrel coats are lovely and warm.

osprey24 · 23/09/2021 23:31

Musto are super warm and waterproof, the RNLI use them.

FloconDeNeige · 24/09/2021 06:26

Nothing hypocritical about pointing out extreme cruelty. You are using it as a deflection from the indefensible.

It is hypocritical, if on one had you’re castigating something for animal cruelty, but on the other you participate in it yourself by eating meat, wearing leather etc. (industrial meat production is cruel). Or is it only the fluffy ones you care about?

If you’re gonna preach from the moral high-ground, you better have both feet firmly on it.

As to my own situation, I bought my coat about 6 years ago on the advice of someone regarding warmth, and I didn’t look into ethics etc. at the time. I wouldn’t buy one now I’m more aware, but I’m not going to stop wearing the one I have. And it is the warmers coat I’ve ever had.

cicatrix1 · 24/09/2021 17:12

Didriksons

Thighdentitycrisis · 24/09/2021 17:27

I have a Didrikson bomber jacket, so warm and weighs nothing

Insanelysilver · 24/09/2021 17:56

Canada goose are meant to be extremely warm. I don’t really like the feather idea though.
