Should I get 'baby bangs'?

Hi there,

I have long hair down to my boob near enough and have always had some sort of fringe. Currently it's a side fringe as the 'on the eyebrow' fringe I had cut 2 months ago has grown out.

My hair is (dyed) red and straight and I do wear glasses.

I've been contemplating 'baby bangs' for a while. Basically above the eyebrow, showing a bit of forehead flesh as I think it looks fun!

However I am 32, not particularly 'edgy' although I do wear doc marten shoes but do not dress in black. Should I bite the bullet? I imagine if I hate it/it makes me look 12 I can always grow it out quickly enough.

What are people's thoughts on this style? Is there an upper age limit to such a fashion?

I don't think this is style I just thin it looks too short, like the hairdresser made an arse of it. I'm in my 40s though so probably way off knowing what is considered style these days

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 13/09/2021 14:50

They really suit some folk.

I see it and think ‘school fringe’. 🤷‍♀️
I am in my 50s though.

bringincrazyback · 13/09/2021 14:51

I don't think age matters but I do think it's a style that only suits some people, tbh. You may be one of them for all I know, but maybe ask a few friends or relatives whether they think it would suit your face.

If you do decide you want to go for it, I don't think you should let your age be a barrier, I think age is irrelevant where hairstyles are concerned (and I'm a fair bit older than you). Smile

Never hear the term baby fringe before!

We used to call it a Cleopatra fringe and I had it once when I was young. I liked it but I haven’t seen anyone in year with one.

There was revival at the time of this advert and the poor woman got a lot of stick!

NatMoz · 13/09/2021 14:58

@Mariell haha I do remember that advert!!! I'll have to read up on the drama though!!! For me the bad acting was amusing at the timeGrin

There really is no age limit on anything. Go to a good hairdresser and do not leave til you are happy with that fringe!! Honestly it'll grow to a normal length in 3 weeks so just go for it!

givinglessfucksdaily · 13/09/2021 15:01

I love that look as long as the hair is razor straight ! Looks very chic
Go for it !

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 13/09/2021 15:13

I think it looks really cool, snd also you are still very young (but no age limit on style anyway!)

PuppyMonkey · 13/09/2021 15:18

I always laugh my head off when somebody calls a fringe “bangs”. It sounds so daft.Grin

I speak as someone who apparently has baby bangs. I’m in my 50s and to me it is just a common or garden “short fringe”.

I had this fringe last year with a blunt messy French bob. It worked really well.

PassionPeach · 13/09/2021 15:33

That isn't really a baby fringe. Baby fringe is about an inch or so from the hairline. Depends what shape your face is. You need a really striking face to carry them off, or the confidence to if you don't.

Miseryisabutterfly · 13/09/2021 15:52

Suits Lily Allen. I don’t think many people pull them off but they can look amazing.

Ughmaybenot · 13/09/2021 15:54

No, no one should imo, they’re truly awful, sorry!

Plump82 · 13/09/2021 15:57

I'm nearly 40 and have a fringe like this. I've had a fringe literally my whole life apart from 6 months or so when I tried growing it out. Never heard it called baby bangs. But I do notice not many people have fringes these days. I was in London recently and got complimented twice on mine so I think you should go for it.

NatMoz · 13/09/2021 16:02

Sorry guys, maybe 'baby bangs' is an American thing but I wasn't sure how else to describe them. I think whoever said Cleopatra fringe was probably fairly accurate.

@Miseryisabutterfly I love Lily Allen's hair in that picture, I'm not sure if my hair is as thick as hers so would probably opt for a straight across variant.

@Plump82 I think you're right, they're not massively popular and I was struggling to get inspiration based on people in the street. Is your hair quite long?

brokenbiscuitsx · 13/09/2021 16:10

I think it depends, with a French type bob like in the film Amelie or a vintage rockabilly fringe like Bettie Page look great. It has to look on purpose and not like an accident ifswim ☺️

My friend has a fringe like this, it would look ridiculous on most people but she's a very alternative type (she's an acrobat) and it looks terrific on her.

Aquamarine1029 · 13/09/2021 16:13

Sorry, but that kind of fringe looks good on very few people. I would go for a softer curtain fringe that's more versatile.

Silverstreaks · 13/09/2021 16:15

Yes, do it.
If you don't like it in two months it will be long again.

lazylinguist · 13/09/2021 16:22

I think they look great on some people. Definitely wouldn't look good on me, but might on you OP!

NatMoz · 13/09/2021 17:01

I couldn't quite work out how to add pictures as I don't think there's an edit or delete function on Mumsnet so my face may now be on the internet forever more.

This is a picture of me I have literally just taken on my bed while scrolling on Mumsnet with my cat Grin. Sorry if it's not the perfect model image. I am in my pyjamas.

Yeah my hair is really long, past my bra strap. There is quite a bit of upkeep because you'll need to keep it blunt. I actually cut my fringe myself.
