Gabis are odd amethyst mine that I have been wearing all day seem really a bit too high and big on the waist but also strangely seem to slide down a bit.. they are ok , but I wouldn't buy another pair mine are both 10s , I am definitely not a 10 (especially at the moment post holiday) ..

Did anyone see this today in the Guardian? www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2021/sep/28/sew-it-yourself-inside-the-zero-waste-zero-sweatshop-revolution

I have ordered the dress sewing kit . It comes with fabric and pre-cut out .. This may be a bit bonkers as I got chucked out of needlework classes at school and haven't really improved in the 40 years since ! But they look interesting, have tutorials and its supposedly a beginners pattern ....

Heres the website - www.pattern-project.com/

@Blossomtoes I want clothes that make me feel good and look for want of a better word cool, that does not always mean thin or sexy - the dress on @Ilovecherries looks shapeless, gathers in a pokey bit out the front - looks as if it was cut for someone who had a different shaped body. It could be the photo but it just does not look good - I have no idea what you are all seeing when you say it's looks great. I clothes that make me smile, to be cut to fit my shape and I like them to hang well, I like them to create an interesting silhouette - be playful, fresh and surprising and I like colours that don't make me look like death. When I see something that hangs badly - that is not flattering - sorry if that's offensive.

Countmeout · 28/09/2021 16:50

Agree re the Gabis @Laska2Meryls. They do slide down a bit. I think they could be be too short if you’re taller than 5’4” but it might just depend on the length of your inside leg @AmethystMoonShine.

ilovecherries · 28/09/2021 16:58

No, you weren’t offensive at all postitnow. I asked for honest opinions, and that was yours, and it certainly wasn’t said in a nasty way. I did think the ensuing discussion about what flattering means was an interesting one though.

The dress still has its label on, so clearly I’m still dithering!

I would try the size 10 @ilovecherries.

Im a RL 12 and the 10 is plenty roomy on me.
I wore it today with a long sleeve tee and cotton tights, no bare legs here !
No cling when sitting down.
Im obsessed with style ,fabric and cut, I want my clothes to fit me well and I want to look good, thats my idea of whats flattering -how I want to look.
Interesting about the Gabis.
I did buy in a 12 as I want them loose enough to get my leg up and over my bike plus loose enough to cycle in Grin
Oooh I like the look of that dress @Laska2Meryls
I love love love that sewing is coming back, it never left many of us Wink and the Guardian can fuck right off with " mumsy" hate that word, it gets my goat.
Im waiting for my Shetland Wool Week Annual to arrive -it has a lovely lace yoked sweater pattern.

I really enjoyed different takes on “flattering”, particularly your observation that it tends to mean “makes you look smaller” ilovecherries. That’s always been my interpretation too.

I like Toast and its ilk because they’re clothes I can put on and forget about. I like feeling comfortable and not looking like everyone else. I detest clothes that show my shape because I’m pretty shapeless these days. And I absolutely love blue, it holds a visceral appeal for me, it raises my spirits and it suits me because I have blue eyes. That’s as close to flattering as I’m prepared to go.

Regardless of what anyone else says, I reckon you don’t love the dress ilovecherries or you’d have ripped the tags off and worn it. I won’t buy anything if I don’t love it these days.

ilovecherries · 28/09/2021 18:41

I did love it when it first arrived. Then mum told me I looked like a greengrocer 🙄. Then I started to doubt it.

ScottishMouse · 28/09/2021 18:56

I really think it looks lovely on you @ilovecherries. I liked it on me except for the length, but the length looks good on you. I would have kept it if I was taller. In case items useful, I tried both 8 and 10 (I am usually a 10 in Toast tops/dresses). The 8 fitted but I felt more comfortable in the 10, and thought it would be better for layering in winter.
But….if you don’t love it, don’t keep it. Like @Blossomtoes I am also trying to only buy things I really love. I ask myself “is this dress/top/whatever it is better than the ones I already have?” or “would I pick this out of my wardrobe over similar pieces of clothing?” If the answer is no, then it goes back.

I think the temptation is to assume flattering is about making you look smaller - but it's got to be more than that. Ds (18) is 6 ft, slim built with good bone structure and very cool hair (I would say that - I cut it!) - he favours a modern, pared back, relaxed look - a bit like Cos. He doesn't dress to be bigger or smaller. We enjoy talking clothes - he always wants my honest opinion and some clothes are definitely more flattering on him than others and none can possibly make him look fat - you'd think he'd look good in everything but all clothes are not equal - shallow as we are, ds and I always want our clothes to enhance how we look.
Laska2Meryls · 28/09/2021 20:25

I think that Denim dress is great on you Cherries remember that your Mum is of an 'age' when female garb had to equal feminine...
It looks fab stylish and edgy..Just Like you!! Keep it .. 👍👍

neveradullmoment99 · 28/09/2021 20:48

Flattering means suiting a person - simple as that. Not anything to do with size.

NoCureForLove · 28/09/2021 20:48

I like the dress Cherries but as I said a while back think you may need to size down. At least to compare... i think it swamps you a bit.

Mariclaire82 · 28/09/2021 21:19

Hi all,

Has anyone ordered/ tried on/ seen in store the Decorative Floral Crepe Dress in 'Oil' ?

I am really tempted to order but can't make out from the description what to expect of the fabric, and the sizing guide is suggesting this comes up smaller than most Toast dresses... any insights?
Thanks

MrsCat1 · 28/09/2021 22:10

@Mariclaire82 Hello. Yes I've seen that dress and tried it on in the Bath store. Fabric is lovely - a weighty, matt crepe. Beautiful colours. Size wise I would say take your usual Toast size. It's certainly not 'fitted'. I liked it a lot and nearly bought it but just didn't quite like enough to part with the cash...I would definitely give it a go.

I was hoping that would be the case with the fabric…. Thanks so much- will definitely give it a go and report back!

So here is the jerkin, I’ve not worn anything like this before, so I’m not sure if it’s a ‘push through’ moment, like switching jeans profile, or if it’s a ‘wtaf are you thinking about moment’. Clearly it talks to me in some way as I’ve been going back to look at it for weeks.

ScottishMouse · 29/09/2021 12:47

@ilovecherries, I love it! But then again, I have tried it on a number of times now, so I clearly am drawn to it too. It looks good over the long shirt. I think it also looks good over dresses. They had it styled over the new sprig print dress in the Edinburgh Toast the other day, and that looked really lovely. I think what I’m not sure it looks so good with is shorter tops. I’d be happy to be proved wrong though, then I could buy it (although it is all sold out online).

ScottishMouse · 29/09/2021 12:52

I figure it works as a “third piece” (is that the right term?). You stick on a pair of trousers and a top but it needs something else to elevate it and turn it into an outfit - jewellery, a scarf, a hat, or…a jerkin!

ScottishMouse · 29/09/2021 13:32

Does anyone have the check crinkle dress and also the navy version from a couple of years ago? Do they differ a lot in size. My crinkle check dress arrived and is huge in a size small, but I know I tried the plain navy one previously and dithered between and small and medium so never bought either. And I am definitely not small than I was then! Not sure if it is just too big and I should try an xs or if it will still be overwhelming as I am short. Hmmmm.

ScottishMouse · 29/09/2021 13:39

I also received the micro gingham jumpsuit (to try again in a smaller size). Beautiful, but I would need to combine the top half of the small with the bottom half of the xs to get it to work for me.
And the Forest green wool cashmere sweater. Which arrived so creased that it just looks a bit shabby on. It is also smaller than the one I already have in another colour. This drives me mad about Toast’s knitwear. It still fits ok, but between the size difference and the creases I am leaning towards returning it out of annoyance.

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 29/09/2021 13:50

I have this seasons crinkled check dress in a small @ScottishMouse , I am a busty 12 and the small fits well on the shoulders but there is a lot of fabric from under the bust down. I am 5’ 4” and it’s long on me but not overwhelmingly so.
I actually tried it with a belt and found it made it a lot more wearable for me but felt I might be committing sacrilege to wear it with a belt Blush. It’s currently still sitting in a bag awaiting my decision but I do so want to keep it as I love the fabric.

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 29/09/2021 13:57

@ilovecherries I like the jerkin, it does lift the trousers and shirt into an 'outfit' as ScottishMouse said. What size did you get? I looked at it but felt it had to be oversized to work for me so never did get around to purchasing it.

ScottishMouse · 29/09/2021 14:10

I think it is going back @Theteapotsbrokenspout. I am only just about 5’2, so feel it is just too much on me.
