Shorter haircut at 43 ..is it aging?

I have superfine hair but no bald patches yet. Have grown it long past my shoulders but imo it just emphasises the fine qyality of my hair. Im thinking of a shorter cut....a bob rather than a pixie cut for now ...my jawline has softened and jowls not too obvious but wanting to start. What dya rekon? I also have a fringe and dont want to look too severe...perhaps a short shaggy bob.

Watching with interest!

missmoon · 06/09/2021 08:05

I don’t have the answer, but also watching with interest as I’m considering the same!

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/09/2021 08:09

I had a blunt cut bob, never had so many compliments on a hair cut.

Lovemusic33 · 06/09/2021 08:17

I’m almost 40 and had my hair cut short a few months ago, my hair was breaking off and getting thin after being unwell so I felt I had no choice (go short or look like I was going bald with dry ends). I went short pixie and I love it, wish I had done it sooner. I colour it, have tried several colours but am now dark red and I’m pleased with it, I don’t think I look older, probably look younger and healthier.

I cut my hair off last year from below boobs to a pixie cut. I hope it doesn't make me look older. No one has said it does 😬

I love how easy short hair is. On holiday currently and I'm not a slave to my hair straighteners for the first time ever

I agree, no longer have to take a hairdryer and straighteners on holiday, I just take a bit of hair gel/clay 🤣🤣
harriethoyle · 06/09/2021 08:23

I went from shoulder length to short back and sides (like Vicky McClure in call of duty) and I wish I'd done it years ago. So many compliments, my husband loves it and it's taken years off me. Go for it!

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 06/09/2021 08:25

I'm scared of shaggy bobs because without styling and products they could look scruffy. They would on me anyway because I have fine, flat hair that doesn't seem to hold any volume. So I guess what you choose would depend on how willing you are to style it every day.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 06/09/2021 09:04

@Lovemusic33 yep. I've got air dry cream. Whack a bit in and I'm good to go. It's so liberating!

I've saved myself an hour a day 😄

TableNiner · 06/09/2021 09:14

It doesn’t make much difference for me, sadly (45). I can either look a bit droopy and dragged down with long hair or I still look older with shorter hair as it looks more sensible and as if I can’t do long hair.

MindBodyChocolate · 06/09/2021 11:42

I’m 43 and I have a ‘French bob’ (google for images) with a fringe and it makes me look really young ☺️ I’d say go for it - long thin hair that just hangs probably isn’t making the most of your hair or features.

Jumpingintosummer · 06/09/2021 12:02

I too have a french Bob and don’t find it ageing. I think the key to not looking older regardless of length is looking’done’, so having hair you can manage.

ReluctantEarlyRiser · 06/09/2021 14:45

I think long hair tends to age badly unless you're blessed with lovely thick locks. I have fine hair and find it works better shorter and quite blunt. Layers and feathering tend to make it look thinner. It looked best in a pixie but I did think it made me look older.

lazylinguist · 06/09/2021 14:53

I've never watched Line of Duty (I presumed that's what you meant rather than Call of Duty, @harriethoyle Grin) but just googled her and that's what I had done too. Loads of compliments and dh said it took years off me!

idontlikealdi · 06/09/2021 14:56

I've grown mine long over the last year after always having a blunt Bob, I love it. I think a pixie is in general less ageing than a Bob, but it depends on your face, style and how you wear it. I'd look ridiculous.

My hair is very grey and I can't dye it so somehow the length seems to cancel that bit out. It's streaky as opposed to a badger stripe though.

harriethoyle · 06/09/2021 15:27

Hahaha @lazylinguist I did! 😂🙈

BikeRunSki · 06/09/2021 15:30

I find that short hair on women over 40 is “youthing”, or whatever the opposite of ageing is.

At 47 I had my bra strap length curly hair cut to a curly french Bob, and I’ve never had so many compliments.

May I ask what air dry cream is please?! I've got a pixie/french crop, would it be suitable?

Standrewsschool · 06/09/2021 21:04

I’ve gone the other way, and gone from a pixie to mid-length hair, mainly due to lack of haircuts during lockdown. I’ve thought if growing it out for ages but never had the willpower. Lockdown gave me the opportunity and I love it.

Laiste · 06/09/2021 21:16

I think that the one thing you have to beware of is looking too 'done'. I find the 'just out of the hairdressers perfect hair' look on short hair is quite aging.

Coffeepot72 · 06/09/2021 21:21

I really hoped that I would look younger with short hair. But I just looked practical/sensible ☹️

Shuttheblinds · 06/09/2021 21:49

I would love to be brave enough to go short. Currently mine is just above shoulders.

For those that have said they had a cut like Vicky McClure, could you post a pic, (of her not you unless you are happy to post one of you!) and which style? I have googled and she has lots of variations of a short cut. I like them all but would love to see which ones are low maintenance,

lazylinguist · 07/09/2021 09:56

I think low maintenance depends very much on your standards and the type of hair you have, as well as the cut. Mine is kind of like this picture (though mine is very fine and naturally mousy, but highlighted). It takes 2 mins to blow dry because it's so fine. Sometimes I don't even bother doing that though .

NameChangeNameShange · 07/09/2021 10:02

Rather than a pixie I went with sort of a young Meg Ryan, I suit it better with some length at the back. Very easy maintenance, and if it gets flat just mess it back up again.

broccolibush · 07/09/2021 10:05

I’ve had short hair since I was a teenager. My hairdresser convinced me to go super short at my last cut (basically a short back and sides) and I’ve never had so many compliments. Including a young man half my age stopping me in the street and asking for my Instagram because he thought my hair so lovely 😂

My hair is low maintenance- wash it, towel it dry and put a bit of wax or clay through it. Takes no time at all.
