Changing wardrobe over (seasonal)

If you switch out your wardrobe for the different seasons when do you put your summer stuff away and bring out your autumn/winter clothes?

Usually end of September but I’m thinking of doing it now as it doesn’t look like we’re in for good weather?

FreekStar2 · 30/08/2021 21:51

1st October and 1st May are my change-over days (obvs. it might be day or two after depending what day I find the time to do it)

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 30/08/2021 22:21

I’ve pulled out floaty summer dresses already - I think that ship has sailed! DP is away this weekend so I might bring out my cosy jumpers. There are some things that stay all year round, like jeans and cardigans, and t-shirts are in a chest of drawers separately.

TuftyRusty · 31/08/2021 07:31

I just do it when I think the weather has changed and I won’t be wearing the last season’s clothes. I think I’m going to do mine next weekend - it’s hovering around the high teens here and grey, and even if we get some nice sunny days I can’t see me being warm enough to wear summer dresses.

Usually around September/October and March/April but depending on what the weather is looking like.

I have a load of stuff I keep out all year - t shirts, vests and other basics and a few jumpers, jeans and some trousers, and lighter jackets. In the winter I pack away all the summery stuff including stuff I’d only wear on holiday and the day to day summer clothes and sandals. In the summer I pack away my thickest/warmest jumpers and heavier trousers as well as warmer coats/jackets (puffer coats/faux fur coats etc) and boots. I leave a pair or two of boots out in case it rains/gets cold.

Bex000 · 31/08/2021 07:50

Yes I did it yesterday, also use it as an opportunity to whittle down my pre40 year old self Topshop dresses.

MrsPear · 31/08/2021 12:25

September /October. It’s more September this year as the weather is so rubbish. It’s not just my wardrobe but the kids too - what’s too small etc I then write lists of what we need. Spring comes in April ish.

Divebar2021 · 31/08/2021 14:58

Usually when I’m bored of looking at the current seasons stuff and start trying to remember what I have stashed away to get excited about. I’m pretty bored of looking at my sandals and am veering more to trainers at the moment but will keep them out another few weeks in case the weather miraculously heats up again. I’ll be removing summer dresses and shorts etc in the meantime.

Hopdathelf · 31/08/2021 15:06

As and when the weather changes. Usually Easter and late September but this year early May and August bank holidays. I didn’t even wear some of the things I bought for summer. Angry

UserNameNameNameUser · 31/08/2021 15:10

I usually have a very messy changeover month in Sept, and again in April, where I pull everything out and have piles of stuff lying around waiting to be packed away.

I used to get DH to put the out-of-season stuff away in the loft, but it always took him so bloody long to do it that I now have under-bed boxes so easier to get to.

Annasgirl · 31/08/2021 15:22

Well I start to put away Summer clothes by degrees from now - so yesterday I looked at my floaty tops (for very hot days) and thought "well, they need to go away" and last weekend, at the end of a hot week, I put away my shorts.

My lighter khaki trousers should last until October, but I don't think I will wear white jeans again this year (unseasonably cold start to the school year here in Dublin).

But I just move my clothes to the bottom drawer when they are not in season - I don't have to store them in an attic.

shouldistop · 31/08/2021 15:23

“n'er cast a clout till May is out

I don't change my whole wardrobe as there's things that can be worn all year. May and September are my changeover months for some of my wardrobe though.
Once a year I do a bit of a clear out too.

AnnieSnap · 31/08/2021 15:49

It depends of when the weather changes for me. It looks like autumn started in August this year. I haven’t done it yet, but any day now. Hi

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/08/2021 16:13

Will do mine in the next few days. Most summer holiday stuff didn’t even make it out this year though, so there’s not so much to switch.

Peridot1 · 31/08/2021 16:23

I’m going to Greece for a week at the end of the month so will start getting my summer stuff sorted for that and do a bit of a clear out at the same time.

It definitely feels autumnal already so will be hunting out warmer stuff and layers shortly.

nordica · 31/08/2021 16:26

Depending on the weather, usually around April/May and then September. I have quite a lot of clothes that work for all seasons really so they stay year round anyway. Thinking of moving my sleeveless jersey dresses into a storage bag and getting my corduroy dresses and pinafores out next weekend.

WhoppingBigBackside · 31/08/2021 20:27

The ne'er cast a clout till may is out refers to may the flower not May the month.

ShanghaiDiva · 31/08/2021 20:33

Did it last weekend as the evenings are already chilly.

shouldistop · 31/08/2021 20:38

@WhoppingBigBackside there's no confirmation of that either way. Some people believe it means the month and some people believe it's the flower.
Although the flower tends to come out in May anyway.

UserNameNameNameUser · 31/08/2021 20:39

@WhoppingBigBackside

Yeah …. But they do flower in May Wink Grin
Reallyreallyborednow · 31/08/2021 20:42

People actually do this? Put all their clothes into storage and bring out another lot according to season?

Do you have that many clothes?

Fuck that 😂. Layer it up and wear it anyway 😂. Then you don’t have to buy double the clothes and fanny about switching wardrobes.

Where do you store all the clothes? My wardrobe is my clothes storage. No where else to put it.

AbsolutelySure · 31/08/2021 20:44

I'm also curious to know where you put all your out of season clothes ....

CeeceeBloomingdale · 31/08/2021 20:48

Normally early to mid September. Then I regret it as there is usually a heatwave! I move things between wardrobes (one is less accessible so the out of season stuff goes in there). I always have a clear out when I turn my wardrobes around and pass things on to friends, the community clothing scheme or charity.

Zinnia · 31/08/2021 20:50

I'm also curious to know where you put all your out of season clothes ....

Vacuum bags under the bed, since you ask.

I usually do it late Sept/early October then around April again, but depends on the weather.

This year I'm temporarily moving house for the duration of autumn, so will be semi-capsule wardrobing for the season. That will be interesting to say the least.

Craftycorvid · 31/08/2021 20:52

I usually do it in stages with the really hot weather clothing first and summer weight trousers last. I have a sort of late summer collection of cotton sweaters that are still summery colours but a little bit warmer. September can rally round and give a late burst of warmth so let’s hope we can wear sandals once more before autumn arrives.

Meredusoleil · 31/08/2021 20:55

I usually go through the kids clothes every big school holiday so 3x a year in April, August and December. I also go through my clothes around the same time, or if the weather is still holding out, I aim for 2x a year when the clocks change so October half term and end of March/Easter holidays.

I also change the duvets over from winter/summer and footwear like slippers/boots etc.
