Itchy head-allergy?

It's really annoying!! Not dandruff or nits but my scalp is really itchy, can't see a rash and wondering if I've had a reaction to some new products? I've stopped using a leave in conditioner and a new Aveeno conditioner that I had tried to see if it calms down, anyone else had anything similar from new products?

Constantly! I am very allergic to many things and now only use AVeda hair products. You could try using a. Coal tar shampoo to see if that helps it calm down

SusielouP · 16/08/2021 10:40

Thank you, glad it's not just me! Will try coal tar shampoo and then go back to basics and stick to products I know don't irritate me.

Both my daughter and I have this. We also are eczema sufferers too so its. not very surprising. I try to avoid products that include parabins. There is a good head and shoulders one that is a combined shampoo and conditioner, and bay shampoo is good.

Silverstreaks · 16/08/2021 11:07

Have you tried cutting out SLS in shampoos and silicones in conditioner?
One or both are common irritants. They both drive me to scaley scalp and furious scratching if I accidentally use either.

SusielouP · 16/08/2021 11:27

Thanks, no I hadn't thought about that at all re SLS and silicone, I'll check the labels, I've used the head and shoulders two in one before and that suited me, thanks all.

Is SLS Sodium Laureth/Lauryl Sulfate?

I have googled and am now looking for alternatives without SLS.

I have a couple of food intolerances and if I've eaten one of those accidently then I suffer with an itchy scalp afterwards, alongside lots of other delightful symptoms. Could this be the case with you perhaps?

OlivesTree · 16/08/2021 11:50

I get this with many shampoos. I find Lush shampoo bars and Faith In Nature shampoos don’t cause itching.

SusielouP · 16/08/2021 13:34

Just looked at faith by nature and I had not even thought about something I had eaten so that's very interesting.

MooGoo scalp cream has been very good for calming down itchiness for me. Anything with coconut oil drives my scalp insane.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 18/08/2021 13:27

I didn’t get an itchy scalp until I stopped using SLS shampoo. Although maybe the problem is coconut oil. Annoyingly I’ve just bought new coconut milk shampoo yesterday!

WeAreTheHeroes · 18/08/2021 13:30

There's a coconut shampoo and conditioner that's SLS free and widely sold in supermarkets - cheaper than a lot of the alternatives too.

AuldReekieCreakymemory · 18/08/2021 13:42

Same situation here, and I find this stuff is amazing - itching all gone within the first few washes, and hair is lovely too -

Are you 100% sure it’s not nits? I was adamant I had an itchy scalp but found DD has passed on nits which had evaded my DH’s checking 😬☹️

mamakoukla · 18/08/2021 13:49

For me, head and shoulders shampoo, use conditioner 1-2 a month but the game changer was using no hair products except hair oil as a serum worked very well into the hair while damp. I do still occasionally get the odd upset scalp but it is largely under control (it would also have a bad odour during a flare up; I was so embarrassed). I have found that using no hair products meant I didn’t really need conditioner as the hair wasn’t as dry

Toomanyradishes · 18/08/2021 16:29

Other ingredients to look out for are methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone which are also known as the itchy m's they are preservatives used in shampoos and conditioners and if they are high up on the list of ingredients they can cause an itchy scalp

Godzillaandgodzuki · 02/09/2021 15:26

@Angryfrommanchester1 I've only just read the updated thread looking for product recommendations and saw your post so said to dp can you check my head again and he said 'well I can but I don't know what I'm looking for with nits to be honest'
so popped to see a friend so she can check my head and she thinks there's eggs!!!!! DS doesn't seem to have them so goodness knows where from, I've got hedrin and combs and clean bedding, thank goodness I saw your post!!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/09/2021 15:29

Cutting out SLS and silicones made no difference to me.

I use a combination of Selsun or Nizoral or T Gel once a month or so then in between Classic Head and Shoulders or The Body Shops Ginger shampoo.

@Godzillaandgodzuki Oh no!
My DD had them in June and DH checked my hair multiple times without spotting them! In the end I did have live lice yuk!
The eggs are hard to spot, look like tiny bits of dandruff but they are stuck fast onto the hair. Slightly teardrop shaped.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my itchy head / nit experience it’s that’s it’s never a ‘fly’ in your hair 🙈

SinisterBumFacedCat · 02/09/2021 16:04

Neutrogina TGel fragrance free is the only shampoo that doesn’t irritate. I have to take it with me when I go to the hairdressers. I had no problems until peri menopause despite having eczema all my life.

Godzillaandgodzuki · 02/09/2021 17:09

Thanks all, @SinisterBumFacedCat I did wonder if it might be down to peri menopause, I'm using hedrin tonight and will comb and comb and if still itchy so not nits (I may be in denial) I will try some of the products suggested.

I found using conditioner without silicone made a huge difference, and I can’t believe it took me so long to realise since silicone based make up makes me break out immediately…..bit dim
