If you don't like jeans...

...and I mean any of them, whether mom, girlfriend, skinny, wide, etc - what do you wear?

I never found jeans comfy, no matter the cut or style. I suit leggings very much but they do get a bit boring, even if I have good quality ones (hiking, yoga, etc).

Would love to hear from others who don't wear jeans, everyone seems obsessed with them!

I don't like wearing trousers in general. I wear skirts and dresses 99% of the time. The only types of trousers I somewhat like are skinny ripped jeans. But I'm very particular with the denim, I mostly like Levi's.

Thank you everyone for some great advice.

I perhaps spent too long living in the Lake District to appreciate the wonders of wool! It was soaked within 5 mins there and I thought I was going to freeze to death without a chunky fleece topped by a giant Rab puffer!

All of those types of clothes only really work with leggings or hiking trousers, and it does get a bit boring....when you're not hiking.

I might experiment with dresses and wool this year, now that I am out of the national park. I possibly need to rethink how I approach clothes for a somewhat different climate.

OP how about purchasing a really big umbrella?

Ive been thinking about this! This is how I used to live, and it never bothered me, that is until I discovered Arc'teryx and North Face with their adjustable, peaked hoods!

I tend not to do a lot of walking in a downpour anyway, so, maybe!

Jeans are awful, they are tight, uncomfortable, takes to dry if they get wet. I live in these trousers from M&S. They are flattering, comfy and wash and dry very well. I wash them at 40 degs and then hang them up to dry. They keep their shape and dry fast and come in different leg lengths.

"Take ages to dry" meant to say!

I wear joggers and hareems 🙂 in place of jeans. Also - Lucy and yak dungarees. Tbh if you need to wear hiking boots most days, I think leggings are your best bet! Of you have thick ones that are good quality, which it sounds like you do, im sure you look great. They are clearly the right clothes for where you live. You would look bizarre schlepping about the fells in a pair of cord dungarees or palazzo pants! Or a floaty dress!

Im not in the fells anymore, but still a fairly blustery, rainy climate. Just not as harsh or cold.

Today was a case in point: had to walk a few miles to pick somenthing up, was quite a cool, constant wind and blowy showers. I wore my 'feel walking' stuff and remained dry and undisturbed. I ddid think at the time, how I would have felt in a skirt and light jacket, it didnt bode well!

Perhaps the best solution is to merge the two, stick to the 'technical' clothing for winter and bad days, and opt for dresses and light wool the rest of the year.

fell walking, not feel.

@Duvetdweller

I was about to say Gary joggers but you’re ahead of me - they do fleece lined ones for winter! I live in them
Does Gary mind?

sorry, I could not resist Grin

I'm in Yorkshire so blustery and wet a lot too, when I want to look a bit smarter, I wear jeggings - I love uniqlo for them, dms and a raincoat - I have a joules one but there are always great suggestions here for them.

For what it's worth, I like the style if the picture you showed as an example of yours 😊

Peanutbuttercupisyum · 18/08/2021 14:33

The thing is, you feel and look SO much better when you wear appropriate clothing! You are clearly pretty active, walking a few miles to go and pick something up - many would wear a dress that day and drive! I think you want to stick to your leggings generally but buy a few outfits you really love for times when you don’t need the leggings and hiking boots. Or - quite a few of my friends have morning and afternoon outfits! Morning is their rushing around leggings/trainers waterproof outfit, afternoon is more stylish and when main tasks might be less physical.

To an extent you do have to dress from your lifestyle if you don't want to freeze. I spend Nov to Jan in jeans, jumper and vest, duffle coat/Parker coat etc and wouldn't consider going for a 3 mile walk in anything else on a day's weather like you've described. I'd expect the coat and jeans to be wet when I got back but that's ok because I have plenty of both so I'd just swap them out, jeans in the wash pile and coat hung up to dry somewhere. I refuse to wear "outdoor" style technical clothing because it makes me feel ugly. If I was wearing a dress because I'd not planned to go out or because it's autumn and the day looked promising when I got up, but it turned out like that I'd definitely drive, wear a proper smart wool coat and take an umbrella too for the dash from car to shop and when I got home any wet bits would dry in half hour in the warm. I also have a couple of fake leather (ie plastic, but it's not obvious) dresses which are great for days like this. If the weather is changeable I watch the forecast and go out on the dry bit between showers if I can. Also waiting for the weather to improve means often going out late afternoon, so if I'm soaked its bath and pyjamas when I return.

ConfusedParticle · 19/08/2021 20:33

Thanks again!

Come to think of it, as a pp said, I don't feel that I suit technical clothing. It performs so well, but the cuts of the garments don't seem to work for me. For instance, I love Arc'teryx and Fjallraven, but their tops and coats are tight at the hips but absolutely massive at the chest. They look so odd on me.

I will probably go for leggings and good quality knits with a big coat in winter, so can still wear my docs and wellies, but switch to frocks and skirts on clear days with my wool coat!

Sounds like a plan OP. If you haven't already thought of it you can investigate jumper dresses which would look good with leggings. Although I've no idea if that's a currently fashionable look. Those outdoorsy coats you mentioned sounds blooming awful! For fitted outdoorsy technical coats look on equestrian websites.

Alwaysonthehunt · 19/08/2021 20:56

OP I know you're trying to get away from leggings but I live in a similar climate and need some good ones - what do you recommend?! Atm I only have Nike (which are too tight on the tum to wear longer than a run) and just crappy M&S cotton ones.

1Wanda1 · 19/08/2021 21:14

Get a Protected Species rain coat.

Cocolapew · 19/08/2021 21:17

I never wear jeans I only wear trousers or joggers this is the sort if look I like.
I wear trainers or if the weather is bad I wear Fly London Chelsea boots.
I like jumpers and sweatshirts that I can stick in the tumble dryer because I don't iron.
