Its probably coming out of lockdown but I am so sick of feeling scruffy and badly put together.

For once in my life I'd love for someone to call me 'glamourous'.

So glam ladies of mn, please please tell me how you do it.

Well, I'm far from describing myself as 'glamorous', but I have had a fair few comments about my appearance, especially since I have had my 2.5 year old DC.
I have one of those hot styling brushes (a hairdryer on a rounded hairbrush barrel) that gives me lovely sleek, bouncy hair in around 10 minutes. I leave my hair to air dry until it's barely damp then clip it up and dry. Use heat protecting spray, maybe an oil or serum if needed. Face and body moisturizer every day, SPF no question. Mascara and concealer if needed just to look a little more polished.xill add bronzer if I feel a little pale but I don't spend any more than 5 mins on my makeup. If you can, any one piece outfit looks much more put together than a few separates; a jumpsuit or a dress with pretty much any shoes (although I find wide leg good with DM sandals or chunky boots works best) and possibly one piece of jewellery will look better than jeans you don't love with a slightly uncomfortable top - possibly a necklace that doesn't quite match.

Oh, and if it has belt loops, use them!
Despite my earlier claim, a t shirt and jeans will look better with a belt than without.

Honestly I think the best thing to do is figure out your body shape and dress accordingly ( within your own taste). I find if I wear something I feel good in, my body language will follow. Colours are a good thing to figure out too, but even then only what you love.

Baggingarea · 07/08/2021 22:17

See I think that is where I'm going wrong! I have no idea what suits me!

Do all the make up and hair styling and just look like I've fallen split ends first into a hedge. Poss it's in the genes!

And also yes title misleading - I want to hear from ppl who have been told they are glam!

Following as I am an absolute horror these days!

Whatsthatohno · 07/08/2021 22:30

Hmm, it hard isn't it. Any idea of body shape, colouring? I'm an hourglass, so anything without a waist means I look like a walking brick. Therefore, I add a belt to anything that doesn't skim my figure accordingly. I bought a lovely jumpsuit thing from Zara the other week in the sale - it's designed to be a relaxed fit (I.e. hangs from the showers) but that doesn't quite work, so I add a wrap belt and it then works for me because I'm better balanced. I've had a fair few complements with it too, so I guess it works.

I used to get more glamorous comments before DC, but I had more time to tan, gym and match my nail polish to the weeks outfits 😂. All in all, I like to wear things that flatter my figure (usually in one colour) and I'll add a few accessories I.em statement earrings that will finish it off.

merrygoround88 · 07/08/2021 22:32

Truly looking glamorous is a lot of time and effort and some, if not always a lot, of money.

When I think of glamour I think of make up, naps and hair all done. Jewellery, good bag. Even if wearing runners, they are nice runners, not just bog standard nikes

Paperdolly · 07/08/2021 22:41

I’ve been told I look glam and was very flattered. It’s taken years but I’ve learned to keep it simple.

Heated hairbrush that spins and styles and gives a sleek look, as above. Babyliss.

Oil to moisturise and plump face each day whilst I brush my teeth.

Simple make up not too heavy. Peach colour on eyelids, cheeks n lips gives a fresh look and tubing mascara never smudges and washes off with water.

Simple base to clothing like a straight plain coloured linen dress and then find an interesting jacket/scarf/shoes to lift the look.

Finally a confident, positive walk/smile. You have to believe in yourself before others will. 🙂

enoughforme · 07/08/2021 23:08

I have please refer to me as glamorous (that sounds so stuck up lol) just being honest though.

Tbf, I don't think it requires too much time.

For me, I excercise and maintain a healthy weight/physique through weight training.

I also ensure to take five minutes every morning and night on skincare.

My hair and makeup takes approx 30 mins on a night out but day to day ten.

I invest in good quality clothes I think this helps a lot. (So next and reiss are probably my two favourites and a good quality handbag and coat as they'll wear for years so I don't mind investing in things like that)

I honestly don't find it all that difficult or time consuming.

I also don't go ott like go to the nail shop or eyebrows etc I find that going too far and unnecessary, personally.

I hope that helps (without me coming across as conceited 😭😂)

Baggingarea · 08/08/2021 10:33

So I'm slim, blonde and tall with a fair complexion. Eat healthily, do skincare shebang, paint my nails, hair treatments and styling on the reg, light make up but matched to my skin tone, nice jewellery. And yet I look at myself in the mirror and think bleurgh!!

Re body type I'm a bit knock knee-ed, tall and have always had a sticky out tummy (exercise doesn't affect). I have a flat chest which I always think makes me look a bit boxy so opt for shirts a lot.

Maybe it's time for fillers, I despair.

Following for ideas

Sssloou · 08/08/2021 11:05

Starts with grooming.

Invest in hair, face, teeth - that’s what most people will be looking at and you should feel confident that you are doing your best with.

Then strong confident body posture and simple clothes. Agree with PP that single garment, one colour, no pattern - flattering, well cut, stylish base.

The “glamour” is the icing on the cake - a small thing - maybe a unique / funky accessory - but it’s most likely attitude!

Baggingarea · 08/08/2021 11:11

Teeth! Right that's what I'm sorting!!

Hi Ladies,
Just chucking an idea in there:

Monochrome outfits. In my opinion, they always look pretty glam and instantly make you look put together. So either the same colour or close shades of the same colour - have a look at examples here:

www.whowhatwear.co.uk/monochrome-outfits-for-spring/slide13

And I think it's quite simple - you don't have to think whether x matches y - if you stick to the same colour, it will match.

Play around with fabrics and textures instead. And save a splash of colour for accessories.

PS. I haven't mastered it yet but love the look and strive for it :-)

Hope this helps xx

Galassia · 08/08/2021 11:24

Wear clothes that fit. Too tight or too big/loose looks unkempt. If you can’t see, pay someone to put darts in or take in at the waist etc.

Hair, teeth and nails should always look clean.

Avoid anything obvious like thick coloured in eyebrows, lip fillers, false eyelashes and fake nails.

Thanks for sharing that - really impactful when you see it - I suppose it’s another iteration of the single garment idea (dress/jumpsuit) …. Thought everything was all going to be black and white….head to toe single colour looks fab.
Baggingarea · 08/08/2021 11:45

@SwordPlay thanks v useful! I love whowhatwear.

Although grateful for responses I feel like we're ignoring the v wide grey area between glam and wearing trackies with greasy hair in a bun. I'm always clean with nice clothes but just always feel dedraggled. Is it u have or or u don't situation?

Is it your mind set? - I have no issue with trackies and greasy hair in a bun if I am home gardening / cleaning / putting the bins out …. I also won’t be aiming for full in glamour on a dog walk etc ….. but confident that can pull it off when I want to / need to.

I actually think people who look too glam on the school run (if they are not off somewhere else after) look overdressed, uncomfortable and out of place.

Baggingarea · 08/08/2021 12:26

Nothing wrong with trackies about the house but I'm more getting at the gulf between that and being someone who is told they are glam. Maybe I'm not explaining myself well.

I just feel like I do all these things but noone ever tells me I look nice. Not sure that's a mind set thing. Not essential for life but would be nice!

I think red lipstick always makes you look glamorous x it literally livens up the face and can make a casual outfit seem that little bit more dressy

backtoworkigooo · 08/08/2021 12:35

I think choosing a colour palette, like wearing white/cream/beige all together or different shades of the same colour. Never put colour with black it makes it look cheap. I think generally navy suits people much more than black.
I always feel more put together if I'm wearing a scarf loose round my neck too. And buy what size fits you best, don't get hung up on a number and squeeze yourself into something, shop sizing differs so much there's no shame in buying what fits

backtoworkigooo · 08/08/2021 12:36

Although I must say when you say glam I think of people like Joan Collins, I think my advice was to feel more put together

BusyEvenForBee · 08/08/2021 12:43

I second red lipstick. Also, nails. Invest in a good quality handbag and accessories which you can use with different outfits. There are lots of YouTube tutorials about that effortless glam hair style (find what you suits your hair). And be confident in yourself!

Baggingarea · 08/08/2021 12:46

@backtoworkigooo that's exactly what I mean haha maybe a bit updated actually!

@PeacheyPeach I wish i could pull it off! Always washes me out and makes me teeth look bad. I have such envy of women who can pop on some Mac ruby woo and look a million dollars.

Change gear. Choose to radiate confidence and see what happens / see how you feel. Fake it to make it if you have to. Why do you need others to validate you - quite a risky strategy.

Be confident that you are gorgeous, glamorous, groomed and radiant.

Baggingarea · 08/08/2021 13:04

@PeacheyPeach I take it back just put on an orangey red and feel better already.

@coodawoodashooda you're right.

@Sssloou hate to say it but you are also right. Feel like I'm just going through the motions at the mo.
