I have just turned 33 and went shopping the other day and felt REALLY old. I have always looke young(short , long curly blonde hair bla bla)and bit trendy but i have lost my way. I have ok figure size 12 big ish boobs but everyhting i tried on made me feel old cause the fit was made for teenagers without blobby bits.

At what age did you walk out of Topshop and into Next and think oh well this is it now.

BTW I am very wary of being mutton as my MIL is soo in denial of being 50!!

I've just turned 37. I don't like Next, so never really go in there. But I still find things I like and I can wear at topshop. And I am perversely attracted by zara's products aimed at younger people . I manage to restrain myself though

Notyummy · 28/11/2007 15:16

I think there is a middle ground. Oasis do some nice stuff, and Monsoon fusion. It doesn't need to be Next which

a. i don't like
b. Never fits me either...if it fits on the waist its too small at the hips and vice versa

snowleopard · 28/11/2007 15:20

I don't like Next much either, except for DS.

I wouldn't rule out Topshop, as it does some interesting stuff, but I find I can no longer be arsed with Oasis, Warehouse, Karen Millen etc.

At 38 and trying not to be too middle-aged-looking, I really like Jigsaw, Kew, some of White Stuff, sometimes Gap, selected Boden and Toast.

Brangelina · 28/11/2007 15:20

I'm 41 and still don't shop in Next. At 33 I was still out clubbing in tiny miniskirts, though smart and grown up at work.

I also don't really look my age and certainly don't feel it but I have mellowed in the last couple of years, although the only real changes are no more mini skirts and slightly more classic stuff. You can still buy from Top Shop but just don't go for the teenager tacky. I still love funky clothes, but I'll more likely now wear just one piece instead of the whole outfit, so less overwhelming IYSWIM.

Pennies · 28/11/2007 15:20

I avoid Kookai - and I loved it in my 20's.

BitTiredNow · 28/11/2007 15:21

I am so glad you all find probs with Next! I thought I was a uniquely horrid shape! I can't do Warehouse - but more of a fat than an age thing, I think.

Brangelina · 28/11/2007 15:23

I've got a lot of Zara jeans stuff, love it. Monsoon is not nice and horribly overpriced IMO.

I think if you don't try too hard and just go with the flow you won't necessarily look like the proverbial mutton. Don't bleach your hair for a start.

Notyummy · 28/11/2007 15:24

I still like Warehouse,. and got a gorgeous dress from Top shop a couple of months ago (I'm 35 and size 10/12 on a good day) Although I'm not overweight, there are parts of my body that I don't feel the need to expose to the world anymore! I spent my 20s doing that (mainly dressed from Kookai and Miss Selfridge!)

Notyummy · 28/11/2007 15:26

Agree Monsoon can be overpriced, but the Fusion range is more stylish and competitively priced I think.

I like Zara and Mango....but everything is so fricking LONG. I am nearly 5 ft 10 and need ton wear high heels with the tousers to avoid them dragging behind me....equally sleeves end up trailing in coffee cups.

Anna8888 · 28/11/2007 15:32

LOL Brangelina at "I'm 41 and still don't shop in Next. At 33 I was still out clubbing in tiny miniskirts, though smart and grown up at work."

That could have been me writing

Brangelina · 28/11/2007 15:35

And because it was dark everyone thought I was 25 max.

Sooo many toyboys.....

LaCerbiatta · 28/11/2007 15:35

I'm 33 and I avoid H&M, dorothy p, warehouse, new look, topshop, not because I think I'm too old or don't have a young enough body for the styles but because I think I'm too old to wear bad quality materials, iyswim. I think you can get away with cheap fabrics when you're younger but not later.

Kew and Gap, Oasis sometimes, are the cheaper highstreet shops I like atm, but I'm getting a bit limited....

Massimo Dutti is my favourite shop (not sure if you can find it anywhere in Britain). Fashionable and classy and not too expensive.

JoanWilder · 28/11/2007 15:36

ha- I hate Next too...so boring/cheap catalogue-y and mean sizes
Zara is ok for some things,
Topshop the same, I dont go near Oasis/Miss Selfridge/Jane Norman/
occasionally M&S are surprisingly goos, and I always nose around the designers at Debenhams, got my best fitting pair of black trousers from there and fab sales in Jan

LaCerbiatta · 28/11/2007 15:37

oh and I'll never shop in Next! It's not much better fabrics with really bad styles....

What's Monsoon fusion?

Tortington · 28/11/2007 15:39

the shops are so dull at the moment DP is particularly dull dull dull.

our high street in small town isnt the best but i reckon next is overpriced , pants and dull. oh lets haev rainbow striped on every fucking thing this year... how DULL

i am fortunate in that at 35 i have a 14 year old daughter an an excuse to go in any shop - and if i like it i buy it. but i wouldnt want to dress in leggings and a dress - am far too old for that.

expatinscotland · 28/11/2007 15:46

i feel old in shops here.

i usually shop online in US shops for this reason.

Monsoon added a 'Monsoon Fusion' range about 6 months ago, which is slightly cheaper and aimed at a slightly younger market than their other stuff. I think it is what would be described as 'more directional' in the fashion world...get me!!

....alternatively its just a huge marketing con..

Obviously worked on me cos I bought some of it.

Brangelina · 28/11/2007 15:57

Ooh, I still occasionally wear a dress with leggings. But then I suppose it's what type of dress with what type of leggings. And I'd never dream of teaming them with ballet pumps. The shoes are important, you can do funky if you have grown up shoes.

LaCerbiatta · 28/11/2007 16:05

thanks notyummy

widgypog · 28/11/2007 16:23

oh i am glad I am not the only one..\i actually do like Oasis but Warehouse comes up small IME. Maybe I should try Zara but the few time I have been in there I have founf it to be a mess. I think I am struggling with the fact I dont look fab woth jeans in the day time .Have fab Diesel jeans which look ok woith wedges but cant do that in daytime. Day i find tricky and I agree that cheap clothes look even cheaper when you have a few lumpy bits. having said that I got some fab 'wool' trousers from Primark the other day which fit so well I bought 4 pairs. It seems such a rareity that I didnt dare miss the opportunity!!

Claire's. Much of Miss Selfridge, sadly. Some of Topshop...

New look (like the devil) and Bay trading (yeuch)

I still go in monsoon, but they have an outlet shop here so tis heavenly...

dexter73 · 28/11/2007 17:08

I always thought that Monsoon was a bit mumsy - a bit like Per Una.
I like to shop in Oasis, River Island, Fat Face... but I don't like Debenhams here as it is just such a mess and I can't be bothered to ferret around.
I actually don't mind Next for jeans and shoes!
