Rosacea

I have this on my nose..it has become a problem this last year or so.
Daily I have horrible spots, redness and enlarged pores, also blackheads.
I am using a cream called fineca which seems to help for a time anyway.
I cleanse and tone, also exfoliate once or twice a week and use face washes.
I have been told it is caused by oily skin and using moisturizers won't help but I think my skin is dry?
I do moisturise but tend to miss my nose if possible when applying.
I also apply retinol(however also been told what I can buy over the counter won't be enough)
Can anyone help?
I am close to booking a consultation where they will get me to use their products but want to hear from real people and what worked for you.

Soolantra. I got it from an online pharmacy and it cost about £40. I haven't needed to buy again as it cleared up all my symptoms. Nothing else ever made a difference.

charliebear78 · 29/07/2021 16:53

Soolantra seems to be the one thing mentioned again and again.
I did look online and it was about what @Piglet208 said.
Worth a try anyway.
Loathe to spend over a £100 on a skin care bundle (which is what the consultant would say I needed!)

Get soolantra from your GP no need to go to an online pharmacy.

Wbeezer · 29/07/2021 17:21

I hardly ever have to use it now, only if i get the occasional papule after forgetting to put sunblock on.

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 29/07/2021 17:22

If you're going to spend money, go to see a dermatologist who isn't affiliated with any skincare brand.

Wbeezer · 29/07/2021 17:31

This is what i use to protect my nose and cheeks, also disguises residual redness, doesn't slide off and doesn't sting my eyes or give me spots. Costs about £7 to £10. I use Bare minerals if its not too sunny.

I get a Mirvaso 3mg/g gel prescription from the drs but it seems to make me look white. I have a redness problem apparently broken veins across one cheek and nose. Slowly it is spreading across to other cheek. I had to have tablets and cream off the drs before I was reffered to a dermatologist which prescribed me this stuff apparently its expensive but some day feels like my cheeks are burning.

By the way finacea is not the same as Nicinamide, it's Azelaic acid. I use Azelaic acid to soothe my rosacea, but mines more redness and no papules. I buy mine from The Ordinary and use it with Cerave face cream.

The most important thing with Rosacea is to use bland creams ( I use Cerave cream n cleanser). A treatment - Solantra sounds as though it may work well for you and sunscreen ( vital).

Mirvaso isn't a treatment as such but reduces the redness temporarily, making your skin look pale. It's useful for special occasions when you don't want to look flushed or when you know you will be having a drink.

charliebear78 · 29/07/2021 20:49

This thread has given me lots to think about, so Thank you all.
I only really use sun cream when out and about in the sun-So I need to use it daily?

JingleCatJingle · 29/07/2021 21:02

Use suncream if you are ever leaving the house.

By the way has anyone had success with lazers to clear the left over broken veins from Rosacea? Soolantra cleared the spots and redness but still have some veins :(

Wbeezer · 29/07/2021 23:42

I'm considering laser, i have some permanent redness on the end of my nose and one cheek. I'm still thinking about it, don't really know how to find a good, affordable practitioner.

mrsjackrussell · 29/07/2021 23:48

Rosacea isn't caused by oily skin. My triggers are wine and wheat and my rosacea was always dry. It was infected, I tried everything and eventually the only thing that completely got rid of mine was antibiotics. I'm taking oxytetracycline a very low dose and have to stay on them for a few months. Tbh I'm frightened to stop.

lborgia · 29/07/2021 23:56

Sorry, yes, azeliac acid, hope you haven't already investedBlush.

Chocarocker · 30/07/2021 01:32

I had tried lots of things to no avail but started using dermalogica age smart resurfacing cleanser a few months ago and my skin has improved no end. Still a little red with some large pores but all the spots have gone and texture and appearance improved. Also changed my moisturiser to an oil free one which I use sparingly and despite my skin always feeling dry in the past it feels much better now.

TWBAEM · 30/07/2021 08:19

Just another one coming on to say that the recommendation on here for soolantra has transformed my skin (and my life!) It took about 6 weeks to properly work, but I can't remember the last time I had a papule. I spent years trying (and spending a lot of money on) other things all of which irritated my skin and left me itchy, red and angry looking. Soolantra has been a game changer.

gubbinsy · 30/07/2021 08:32

Another one dying the flag for soolantra - I get it on prescription from GP

charliebear78 · 20/09/2021 12:11

Thank you all.
I have now been using soolantra on my nose for about 2 weeks.
It has caused me to break out into lots of spots both on my nose where I suffer but also around the nose area.
Is this a case of it being worse before it gets better?
Did you all experience this?

OP posts:
valerianroot · 20/09/2021 14:52

Soolantra. It's the only thing that's worked for me. It's amazing stuff.

astridforty · 20/09/2021 14:56

I bought soolantra from an online pharmacy after reading about it on here, then I was nervous about applying a prescription product without anyone having assessed my skin. I ended up taking a punt on skin&me and that’s been fabulous. It’s £3.50 for first month, £20 a month after that for personalised (I guess to a point) treatment. It’s 90% dealt with the acne rosacea and my skin is miles better. They recommended pairing it with the la Roche posay cleanser and moisturiser - also fab.

mrsjackrussell · 15/11/2021 12:24

Just something to add.

Nothing worked for me only antibiotics but I can't take them forever so I stopped. I'd started using no7 protect and perfect serum and moisturiser. I find my rosacea is better if I moisturise anyway.

I broke out in pustules but normally they wouldn't go away and just get worse but they've actually been healing up. It must be something in the no7 and I wonder if it has azaleic acid in it.

I also found my trigger. It's wine even just a small glass.

mrsjackrussell · 15/11/2021 12:25

@charliebear78 I have heard that soolantra can make it worse initially. How is it now?

70smillie · 15/11/2021 12:28

Another Soolantra fan. Yes it did get a bit worse before it got better. Most of the time now you would never know I had a problem.

WearingPurpleAlready · 15/11/2021 13:04

I am #blessed with rosacea. I was diagnosed ages ago and prescribed antibiotics and rosex gel. Used both and it cleared up. It comes back sometimes. You have to find what tour triggers are. For me it's alcohol, particularly red wine, stress and hormonal changes.

My skin is dry and I use an oil based cleansing balm on it, which works really well for me, so I don't think it's strictly true that you have to avoid oils. I also find niacinamide and zinc from The Ordinary works well when I do have an oil break out. Sometimes it isn't oily, but more like a big, thumb print size, red mark on my face (cheekbones). The only thing which gets rid of that is antibiotics unfortunately.

Beautifullymixed · 15/11/2021 16:47

Another sufferer here who tried soolantra to no avail. It irritated my skin.
Only antibiotics helped the pustules, whiteheads and sore, angry areas.

I used cetaphil cleanser, hada labo hyaluronic acid, cosrx snail serum and cerave or sebamed gel. Vaseline also helped.

I was on antibiotics for months before it all cleared.

Southbucksldn · 15/11/2021 18:52

I used azaleic -as recommended by a medic to sooth and control the redness…..I found that after 2 weeks it was under control and didn’t need anything other than SPF 50. I also used stuff from pharmacy and never needed above 10%.
But I also cleanse really well before with a salicylic acid face wash which is also a little anti inflammatory.
