Is this as good as it looks? I've seen so many things I like but wondered if anyone can recommend it? Also the sizing? I'm a 14/16 so looks like an XL, any tips?

And if anyone is interested, of the "cheap" high street shops, H&M probably has the best rating.

@OhHeyItsSaturday

Nope I think it's a cheek for BlairWaldorf to pointedly say she's not environmentally friendly but lecture people on buying from Shein. All the shops she's quoted as being 'cheap' aren't particularly free of slave labour or sweatshops either.
Not environmentally friendly at all, gives no fucks about the ethics of testing and cruelty towards animals, and causes damage to the environment every time she leaves her house and jumps in her car. Chooses to eat meat, despite knowing how damaging this is, and how this is the one thing we can all do that will have a massive positive impact on the environment, on world hunger, on global warming, because she likes it. Yet condescending about someone buying an outfit from a retailer she wont use.

It is the height of hypocrisy.

If you want to pick and choose where you shop to make yourself feel better for your choices and actions, that’s fine. But acting high and mighty when your actions every single day are unethical, but you like it, is ridiculous, don't you think?

Iamthewombat · 27/07/2021 15:35

Are you seriously suggesting that only vegans who don’t own a car and make their own clothes from woven grass can have an opinion on the wastefulness of the fast fashion industry and the dubious ethical practices that allow the clothes to be sold so cheaply?

Midnightstar76 · 27/07/2021 15:39

No don’t bother. I have bought one and the stuff was very bad quality, definitely not worth it. I then ordered again for my 13 year old DD who was insisting on trying it out. DD realised I was right as the clothes were sub standard. Never ever again OP

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 27/07/2021 15:39

@CassandraTrotter

Everyone makes unethical decisions. Some are more unethical than others. I responded to the points in your original post (car, smartphone, meat) to be transparent, so I wouldn't get accused of hiding the fact that I could be seen as a hypocrite.

To me Shein is the equivalent of the LEAST ethical decision you can make. It would be like me:

  • Eating battery farmed meat for every meal or wearing fur - no i don't do that.
  • Buying the most polluting car, brand new - no I don't do that.
  • Buying a new smart phone every year - no I don't do that.

Everything is on a spectrum. When it comes to buying new clothes, buying hauls from Shein is THE WORST ethical decision you can make. Anything else is better. This is my only point.

Change my mind.

OhHeyItsSaturday · 27/07/2021 16:04

@BlairWaldorfLovesShopping I certainly don't care about changing your mind. But bleating on and lecturing others as if you're some sort of environmentally friendly goddess is a cheek when you're not!

Iamthewombat · 27/07/2021 16:07

In other words, “nobody will part me from my cheap clothes and anyone who tries must be ruthlessly punished for making me feel bad”

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 27/07/2021 16:15

@OhHeyItsSaturday just to clarify, I don't think I'm some sort of environmentally friendly goddess. I never said or implied I was. Again, do I need to be, to have an opinion? If so, maybe you could provide a definition.

If people aren't aware of the issues with shops like Shein, how are they supposed to become so if people like me are not allowed to discuss them on an internet forum?

You do realise don't you that the majority of the clothing in the shops you recommended as being cheap are made in China and therefore shipped over here, don't you?

Some items in UK stores may have been made by a child, or in a sweat shop, or their fabric produced by slave labour workers. Even premium brands here are not always ethical in how their items are produced.

Fedinbed · 27/07/2021 17:44

Is primark more ethical than shein?
I never buy loads of clothes but I do buy fairly cheap clothes as to my mind there’s not much difference in quality or ethics unless you go for the super expensive, small specialist brands.
I’ve got primark tops that are 8 years + old and still fine

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 27/07/2021 18:30

@OhHeyItsSaturday of course I understand that. Didn’t you read my previous post where I linked to all the Good on You ratings? They have done the research and say that all those brands I listed are better than Shein. Not great. But better than Shein.

directory.goodonyou.eco/brand/primark Yes, Primark is better than Shein.

You said you eat meat because you don't want to stop....THAT RIGHT THERE is the most unethical decision you can make. Horrible reason.

Pot, meet kettle.

Iamthewombat · 27/07/2021 19:15

When you see Extinction Rebellion protests, do you go over with your little checklist, ask them whether they eat meat and, if the answer isn’t to your liking, berate them for being in no position to protest? How about Greenpeace? Friends of the Earth? The Green Party?

You are being ridiculous.

Shieldingending · 27/07/2021 19:20

Teen DD has ordered quite a lot from there and I have been pleasantly surprised. One of my work colleagues has had a selection of beautiful dresses every single one of which has been from Shein so I’m definitely going to look for myself

BarefootHippieChick · 27/07/2021 19:33

Myself and dds love Shein, we always read the reviews first and it helps to see photos of real people wearing the clothes too. I'm a UK 8/10 and will usually order S/M depending on what it is. I have trousers, winter jumpers and tops that wash really well. Dds like their tops, hoodies and accessories. I also have a few necklaces that haven't tarnished, unlike some cheap Primark jewellery.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 27/07/2021 19:45

@LastSummerHere I clearly said when it comes to buying new clothes Shein is the worst decision ethically. Not the worst full stop.

Most people in the U.K. eat meat, so are you saying that these people are not entitled to an opinion on whether something completely unrelated is ethical?

Who is allowed an opinion? What are the rules? They have to be vegetarian/vegan (?) what else? 🙄

isthismylifenow · 27/07/2021 19:47

I'm not in the UK and I know many people who order from Shein, Zaful etc.

Yes maybe the quality is on par with Primark, but we don't have Primark and most of the choices mentioned up thread . And to be honest, the cheaper shop options we do have, most of the items are from China anyway.

It's very popular with the teens, so they can wear something different that noone else has. We don't have as many cheap and cheerful clothing options as you, and I would say a lot of other countries around the world do not either. This is a worldwide site for shopping.

So although I havent personally ordered, it's a very popular option here. As mentioned, always check reviews for quality and sizing. I do try to support local, but a lot of the time it's out of price range for a teen / seasonal items.

OhHeyItsSaturday · 27/07/2021 21:05

Well said @LastSummerHere

Honestly, this reads like you have no idea about the damage eating meat, beef and lamb in particular, has on the planet and on global hunger of humans.

To be so condescending and opinionated about shopping at one shop, when doing everything you can to make life worse for others, is a ridiculous stance to take.

Nobody mentioned homemade woven grass clothes. Did you just make that bit up to try to discredit facts because you actually know how selfish for the environment eating meat is? Hmm

what makes you think choosing not to buy from one shop makes your environmental footprint better than someone else who is making other decisions about their environmental footprint? Thats my argument. You eating meat, driving a car, buying clothes from anywhere produced outside your own country has an environmental impact. Choosing one shop to not shop from but doing all the rest does nothing. Your self righteous attitude is idiotic when you actually think about what else you are doing.

ShrikeAttack · 27/07/2021 23:21

Hmm @CassandraTrotter, I think you may be trying to justify your desire for just about the most unethical clothing a little bit too much. Arguably eating the locally produced lamb that grazes outside my window on land unsuitable for arable crops is much more environmentally friendly than eating out of season asparagus freighted from Peru, or palm oil, avocados or almond milk, all of which are environmentally problematic.

It's not a ridiculous stance to choose not to buy clothes from Shein, their practices are appalling and well known, but sure, have a mad rant at @BlairWaldorfLovesShopping if it helps you feel better about your decision to buy cheap frocks.

Iamthewombat · 27/07/2021 23:21

The independent ratings of different retailers referenced several times on this thread, for a start.

To be so condescending and opinionated about shopping at one shop, when doing everything you can to make life worse for others, is a ridiculous stance to take.

Wow, you are quite spiteful aren’t you? How do you know that everyone opposing your ‘buy from the cheapest shop and to hell with the consequences’ policy is “doing everything they can to make life worse for others”? Or does that suit your narrative, ie that anyone who dares to disagree with your choices must be a bad person?

You still haven’t answered the question, incidentally: what criteria must somebody live by before you deem them worthy to opine that Shein isn’t an ethical business?

Titsywoo · 27/07/2021 23:23

I have quite a lot of bits from Shein as does DD and I have found them all great and the quality is pretty good. Nothing is falling apart and all looks good on.

Titsywoo · 27/07/2021 23:24

I wear an 18 and XL is good for me if a bit snug on the non stretchy items so L or XL will be fine for you

Are you even listening to yourself?? Who makes the rules? You, apparently. I have never bought Shein tat in my life. I don't drive. I have been a vegan for over 39 years. I can fucking preach. YOU can't.
