Advice on modest swimwear to take preschooler for swimming pleaseming

Just that really. I want to take dd (3.5) for swimming lessons but I have no body confidence at all. I don't want to hold dd back coz of my insecurities. I would like to wear a very modest swimsuit but not seem out of place if you see what I mean. Would a short wetsuit make me look out of place ? I was thinking something like this (but obviously not this as my size is out of stock) www.mountainwarehouse.com/shorty-womens-wetsuit-p7000.aspx/dusky%20purple/#tabArea

Has anyone seen or does anyone wear a wetsuit type swimming costume for kiddie swim lessons and not felt out of place? Does anyone have any recommendations for a modest swimsuit ? Tia x

I have insecurities. I don't think there's any need to splash (!) out on a wet suit. I used to wear swimming cozzy, tshirt and leggings. Especially at toddler swimming age t-shirt is good for when they grab the swimming costume fabric and yank, potentially exposing your boobs. To be honest I think I actually stood out more dressed like that . My pool has a notice with acceptable clothing for swimming. You can get full length swimming costumes, which are usually a top and a bottom.

YouAreShoutingAtTea · 20/07/2021 15:06

I ordered swimming shorts and tops from here modli.co/ they’re quite nice!

goose1964 · 20/07/2021 15:06

I dont think that would work in an indoor pool. If you want to though there's one on Amazon modeokker which gets good reviews.

IDontDrinkTea · 20/07/2021 15:07

Honest answer, wear whatever you like, I promise no one will care.

I’ve taken my toddler to swimming lessons since she was a baby. In that time, I’ve seen mums wearing everything from teeny tiny bikinis, to wearing a T-shirt and men’s swim shorts over their costume.

Wear whatever you feel most comfortable in. Don’t let it hold you back from making memories with your child

Decathlon sells swim suits with high necks and shorts or some with skirts over them like this

I love them. No more bikini line faffing before swimming Grin

I just ordered this to which I will add a rash shirt. It is for diving in warm sea water but works for pool. V cheap

rbe78 · 20/07/2021 15:15

Lidl had swiming leggings and long sleeve tops for sale a few weeks ago. Your local one might have some still in stock. Decathlon have some if not.

I wouldn't recommend a wetsuit, bit OTT for a pool and a faff to get in and out of when you're also trying to deal with a preschooler!

Bluntness100 · 20/07/2021 15:17

I also think a full in wetsuit in the local pool will be a bit much and you’d probably feel quite self conscious in it. Plus it’s a bastard to get on and off. Would any of the other solutions work?

I have 2 of these, the all black one and the blue and black one, they're great, don't fall down on the front, full bum coverage and also cover the tops of my thighs which I'm not fond of. I do find the black one longer in the body so if you're tall go for that, the blue one gives me a bit of a wedgy 😁
plixy · 20/07/2021 15:21

I hate my thighs and will not wear swimsuit/bikini bottoms out. I've bought some men's swim shorts from H&M for £9.99 and wear them over a regular women's swimsuit. They are much longer than any women's shorts I've found and cheaper!
But I guess it depends what part(s) you are trying to cover.

TheUndoingProject · 20/07/2021 15:24

Lands End have lots of good modest swimming options.

Orf1abc · 20/07/2021 15:24

Are you looking because you don't want people to see your less firm bits, or do you wish to cover up for religious/ moral reasons? If it's the former, you'll get more attention by covering up too much, than if you wore a normal costume. Also, some pools won't allow you in the water with leggings/ t shirt etc, as they can impair you in an emergency.

I used to do the same, look for something with as much coverage as possible. Then an advisor in Bravissimo gently suggested that I'd feel more confident in a normal costume but a bigger print. The print distracts away from my flabby bits, the eye is drawn to the print and not my jelly thighs.

If you're ordering a few, it might be worth a try, just to see how you feel.

randomsabreuse · 20/07/2021 15:26

I wear a boyleg swimsuit with a cheap sports crop top underneath. Limits the grabby toddler issues.

Wouldn't do a wet suit - you will boil alive as most swimming pools are set warmer for toddler lessons.

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/07/2021 15:36

Also, some pools won't allow you in the water with leggings/ t shirt etc, as they can impair you in an emergency.

Which is odd because men and boys wear long board shorts and are never challenged where DD got hassle from one employee when wearing board shorts and a rash shirt. He went so far as to try to touch it without permission to see the fabric was a swimming one. I almost lost my shit.

I've bought DD Modli to see if it's good. Not cheap but she likes to cover up and we do a fair bit of wild swimming so sun protection is really important.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 20/07/2021 15:36

A wet suit is hard to get into and back out of, skin tight and better if you have someone there to help you.

Which bits are you trying to cover? Arms? Legs? Local pool I have worn a long length tankini top with ruched middle and built in support with "board shorts" which are like men's swim shorts, ie loose not tight. Mine are off Amazon Charmleaks Shorts

Hardchoices · 20/07/2021 15:40

I am the same and hate swimming but go for my kids. In my experience as a swimmer and as an observer of others, the most unlike a normal swimsuit the more you will stand out. Just get a good suck in, low leg, arse covering swimsuit

horseymum · 20/07/2021 15:44

I think Tu ( Sainsbury's ) were advertising shorts style legs swimsuits. I wear the sports direct ones but they don't last long.

mummyh2016 · 20/07/2021 15:59

If you're self conscious have a look at Tesco as they sell swimming costumes that pull you in and make you look smoother.

JC12345 · 20/07/2021 16:03

I use a rash vest for my toddler swimming classes as my boys like to hang on to my swimming costume so gives a bit more coverage!! We have quite a multi cultural clientele at our pool and several in full sleeve and leg costumes.

thinnerlikeachickendinner · 20/07/2021 16:09

I do think it’s a feminist issue too, why the hell should we have to reveal so much while the guys hang in knee length board shorts? One of my American male relatives is all ‘you need to get in a cute little bikini’ - sure love, as soon as you get in a cute little spandex mankini thong!

Love my rash vest and also some of these suggestions!

TokyoSushi · 20/07/2021 16:14

You'll draw more attention to yourself in a wetsuit which will defeat the object. I think your best bet is a boy-leg swimsuit as recommended above

Bells3032 · 20/07/2021 16:16

I bought one of these last year as I am very self conscious of my legs. I liked it so much i bought a second one. so comfy and can just chill out all day in it

I wear legsuits all the time now.

Swimming in UK pools, on holiday in med next to all the bronzed topless women etc.

You get a few funny looks but so what. You feel so comfy in them. You can jump dive and no worries about things falling off. I have always had good self esteem body confidence etc but even I feel way more relaxed without bottoms going up my bum etc. Loads of pubes no problem. And I burn so halves lotion time. And you can put a t shirt over and they look like shorts! Have done this to leisure centre in UK (in car) and it makes changing superfast!

They are awesome and just the ticket :)
