What had happened to EBay?

Listed some good quality clothing, Cos, Boden etc with Buy it zNow. Reasonably priced, people offering a lot below asking price, not interested when counter offer(also reasonable) sent.
I always used to manage to sell stuff but now it’s becoming increasingly difficult.
Also I don’t want to pay extra to boost/ promote views etc.

I have almost stopped buying on eBay completely whereas before I would shop there regularly.

The prices seem weirdly high. What sellers don’t seem to realise is that most people a) aren’t buying as many clothes as before lockdown and b) actual retailers are slashing prices so c) people can afford to buy brand new direct from the retailer. So 70% of BNWT price is really not good value.

I was selling my daughters clothes during lockdown and it was always hit and miss. But recently it's not worth the money. The last things I sold was 10 pairs of leggings for £2.50 and ten Boden, Jolues, little bird items for £5.

With the postage it has to be worthwhile for the buyer and with the fees etc it's not often worth it for me either.

Vinted is a mixed bag and I had two buyers in close succession saying a brand new item with tags was filthy ( it had a pen mark I had shown in pictures) and another get a £15 bundle refunded due to a pen mark on a 50p t shirt.

I aim to buy what I'm.going to wear out to death now. Plus im aiming to only buy the kids more flashy brands second hand in future. I bought dd a Monsoon dress in 2019 in the sale for £12. I wanted to size up but the dress is over two years old and being sold used for £12 plus postage. I know it not worth that. I got a new Monsoon dress for £10 in the sale with free postage plus I can return it no qibbles for free

It's a saturated market.

eBay is a bit passé now

Yeah, I don't bother selling anything on eBay unless it's worth over £10 as photographing, listing, packing, and taking to the post office is pretty time consuming. I think from a sellers perspective, if you're only going to get a couple of quid for an item then it's simply not worth your time. I'd rather just donate to charity.

I've seen this a lot on eBay, where people are selling current sale items at higher prices. Tbh, I suspect that most of these people have bought items in the sale to try to sell on for profit.[/quote]
Yes completely agree. I've been lusting after a pastel Hayley Menzies dress. A very similar style to the one I wanted became available online at TK Maxx (it didn't have the belt that most Hayley Menzies shirt dresses have, so I suspect it was made for TK Maxx and decided against it). Now they are all over eBay. The same beltless pastel dresses. For more than I could have bought them for online.

But this puzzles me. I've seen them listed on eBay for weeks now with no bids. Surely the sellers must be losing money with all this inventory no one is buying?

WoMandalorian · 29/07/2021 09:49

I still look on ebay but people are right about Facebook marketplace. You can get the same stuff for a fraction of the price, no waiting for auctions to end, no having to bid against people and no having to pay postage fees.
We are also coming out of a global pandemic. People want stuff but have no money to buy it.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 29/07/2021 10:29

Second hand clothes are tricky - I’m looking at a camel coat on depop. It’s cashmere so the seller wants nearly £100 for it and I can’t quite bring myself to spend that much on something when I don’t have any return rights. I don’t use Facebook so marketplace is out and eBay is just a pain now as there is just so much stuff, it’s impossible to trawl through it all.

I will use it for some things where I have a search term that means I get a reasonable number of hits (mainly scarves and accessories). Selling is more hit and miss now as fees take longer to arrive in your account.

Agree that the market is just saturated right now.

I buy almost all of my clothes on ebay now..everything but underwear and shoes. I find most stuff is really cheap.
I have saved searches on brands I like, or specific items I'm looking for. It's amazing how often things turn up eventually in the right size.
I had a Barbour rain coat that is too big for me now, it was around £300 new. Eventually one turned up on ebay for £40.
That's an exception though, I rarely pay more than £10 for anything. I bought a beautiful Monsoon dress recently for £10.
The thought of spending £100 on an item of clothing now seems ridiculous, especially when I'm losing weight and they might not fit me for long.
I never sell on there anymore... it's too much hassle.

Lovemusic33 · 29/07/2021 12:03

I list with buy it now but without the offers thing, just list it at what price you want to sell it for, I sell quite a lot, sometimes it takes a while and other things sell straight away. I hate the “offer” thing.

beguilingeyes · 29/07/2021 12:16

And now I've gone down a Self Portrait rabbit hole, so thanks for that... Smile
They're not big on sleeves though are they?
