What had happened to EBay?

Listed some good quality clothing, Cos, Boden etc with Buy it zNow. Reasonably priced, people offering a lot below asking price, not interested when counter offer(also reasonable) sent.
I always used to manage to sell stuff but now it’s becoming increasingly difficult.
Also I don’t want to pay extra to boost/ promote views etc.

Up until some years ago I only bought stuff on ebay but then persuaded my daughter to show me how to get the app to sell on the site. I've sold lots of stuff for charity and also for myself as I'm not working at the moment. I've had the odd person say they've not received their item and want a refund. Last week somebody took out a case on me as they claimed they had not received the item. This was 20 days after I had sent the item! Why didn't they contact me first? Very strange.
I've also bought lots on ebay over the past years with excellent service but then bought something a month ago which was faulty. Ebay refunded me with no problems.
I've always stuck to the UK when posting out items and have stated that in my listing for the past 10 years or so.

Sorry . For some reason my original post has just appeared.
So selling a NWT Cos cotton blouse, not worn. Asking £15, people offering £6! I’ve offered to split the difference and not interested. Similar Boden items.
Some of the charity shops in my area are trying to sell things at vastly overpriced rates. Jigsaw jumpers with marks on £30+. It’s ridiculous!

I think what you need to remember is that buying on eBay is a gamble. Even if it's a brand you know well, you don't get to see, feel and try on the item. I.might well spend £15 on a BNWT COS top in a charity shop, but not online when I can't try on, return or judge the fabric.
I buy a lot on eBay and I've noticed the prices asked have gone up a fair bit in the last few years.

thedevilinablackdress · 20/07/2021 16:39

(Charity shop pricing is a whole other topic, covered in a few threads recently)

onlyconnect · 20/07/2021 16:49

I have sold a few things on Ebay lately. I have started asking a set price rather than auctioning and it's gone well for me. Maybe my expectations are low. I've sold a Kew dress for £15, a Cos dress for £18 for example. Both were worn but in very good condition.
I don't get as much as a few years ago but not too bad.

Sanguinesuzy · 20/07/2021 18:56

Not clothes but we sold a leather sofa a few months ago on Ebay. In excellent condition, decent leather, classic style and not really used. I paid £700 for it in a sale 3 or 4 years ago, only sold it because it didn't go with new decor. Took 6 weeks to sell at £80, initially tried at £150. Maybe that was a fair price but they got a bargain.he
Dp has more luck with facebook marketplace. Is massively into Landrovers and has bought and sold loads of associated stuff, tyres, spare parts, even a complete vehicle that he took apart Grin

LizzieMacQueen · 26/07/2021 10:02

I'd a few things listed on Vinted and I'm a bit shocked at the cheek. Eg I was selling a pair of boys boden t shirts. Worn but still decent condition. I was offered £1.50 for them ( was selling at £3.75 ).

But now my pissed - off ness is reserved for the buyer who is just failing to acknowledge receipt; the postage price did not cover 'signed for' so I used regular post.

Vinted support have just said to be patient. The money's not the thing, it's under £5, but why do people do this? Customer had positive feedback.

I don't sell on ebay but I buy LOADS - just about to hit 3000 items. I usually wait about 2-3 weeks for an item to turn up before I query.

For some reason, in the last few months I have hit the "contact seller" button when I have wanted to find out when they sent etc - but it automatically opens a case - even though I just want to say "hi there - my item hasn't turned up yet - can you let me know when it was posted?"

It might be what happened to your buyer?

This happened to me too @LizzieMacQueen buyer said they didn’t receive item when I know that they did but I couldn’t prove it so EBay refunded
This was 6/7 months & I haven’t used since but I sold something last week for the first & they put my payment on hold until this buyer confirms receipt!
Once I get paid I’m deleting my eBay account and never using again

cherrytrismum · 26/07/2021 14:00

I moved from EBay to Vinted to give it a go. I only post Royal Mail signed for. The problem I have is that The Post Office read postcodes wrong, clearing in capitals on the address label. So according to Vinted I hadn't sent it to the right address, so buyer got a refund, also once posted as sent, the address details disappear and Vinted then won't give you it, to check, under GDPR. Only happened to me the once, first sale though. So disheartening. But got it refunded via compensation from the Post Office.

So lesson learn't. So take a screen shot of the address page, pic of the parcel, showing address and recorded label, so at least it matches the Royal Mail receipt if they input the post code wrong, as you can't check it, once you have handed it over for them to affix the stamp. I don't own a printer to do it all at home unfortunately.

Apart from that, it is going well.

orchidsonabudget · 26/07/2021 14:06

Ugh. I have loads to sell on eBay. Have been doing well. But still have loads to do 😱

diddlediddle · 26/07/2021 21:21

People selling - don't forget you also have to be selling something that people actually like and want! Just because it's new and from COS doesn't mean it's nice - you're selling it for a reason presumably... I do think you can still get ok prices on eBay for desirable/popular items but it's harder for the rest of the stuff

Classic white Cos blouse. People do want it but at a rock bottom price!! Anyway, it has been sold now.

I sell on Ebay (among other platforms) and 95% of my customers are in the USA so my shop is registered on the US site. Americans rarely pay custom fees as they have a $800 customs allowance. I also have some good customers in Japan, China, Korea and Taiwan. Maybe its only Brits who are cheapskates. However I sell quality antiques and not basic second user stuff.

There was another thread from a seller who was using Facebook marketing and she complained about people wanting her to deliver, not turning up and only wanting to pay rubbish prices.

I do sell in some Facebook private trading groups but again, my customers are mainly from the USA.

memberofthewedding · 27/07/2021 14:53

@cherrytrismum - thanks for your remarks about Vinted. I have been looking at that but you have put me off a bit.

But I am old fashioned. I keep a hard copy of every sale complete with photo, address details etc I only discard it after 6 months by which time it is no longer possible to make a Paypal claim. I also keep all postal receipts for that period. Even in these days of electronic marketing I have paper files - comes from my days of working as a librarian. So even if the broadband goes kaput I still know what Ive sold and who to. And all the payments/addresses are in Paypal anyway.

thedevilinablackdress · 27/07/2021 15:02

I still maintain that buying clothing without being able to try on is such a gamble that it's not surprising we don't want to risk too much £££.
And COS in particular! I love it, but as those of us who shop there know, just because you think something looks great, you can put it on and it's all weird in some way. Even the most seemingly innocuous garment can have an unusual cut that might not suit you

RestingStitchFace · 27/07/2021 15:10

I both buy and sell via Vinted now. Much easier process

Gilbot · 27/07/2021 15:22

@RestingStitchFace is Vinted all £1/2 or can you get ok money for stuff?
I’ve got quite a bit of Reiss/Whistles type stuff. I don’t expect mega bucks but would like say £10 for a Reiss dress or £6 for a top. Is that realistic?

RestingStitchFace · 27/07/2021 15:26

Obviously the cheap bargains do get snapped up. But my experience is that good brands in good condition will sell eventually. I have sold a Boden dress in vgc for £18:00 and a Coast dress nwt for £23.00.

Marriedtothesilverfox · 27/07/2021 15:29

Vinted is so much better

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 27/07/2021 15:43

Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

I laugh out loud at some of the prices on there. Second hand items at 70% the original price. No thanks, I’ll pay that little bit extra for a brand new one with free delivery, thanks.

MidnightMeltdown · 28/07/2021 20:51

I've sold quite a lot on eBay over the years. I find that shoes and bags still sell really well, but clothing is now much more difficult (unless it's a fashionable brand like Sézane). Jigsaw and Whistles used to sell well, but not so much anymore. I think the second hand clothing market is just completely saturated.

MidnightMeltdown · 28/07/2021 20:55

@WineGetsMeThroughIt

I've seen this a lot on eBay, where people are selling current sale items at higher prices. Tbh, I suspect that most of these people have bought items in the sale to try to sell on for profit.

PamDenick · 28/07/2021 20:56

Just ride to lust something and oh my, the website is sooo clunky and difficult to navigate...

PamDenick · 28/07/2021 20:56

Tried to list!!!
