Help me find a soft and comfy prom dress

AChickenCalledDaal · 11/07/2021 13:56

My younger daughter has a year 11 prom in eight days time and is in a state about what to wear. She has zero interest in fashion and normally lives in oversized cotton tee shirts and shorts. Hates anything fitted or restricted. Apart from her compulsory school skirt she hasn't chosen to wear a skirt or dress for years. But we've been through the process of trying to choose an outfit with trousers and nothing is working.

I think her best option is a plain dress in something soft and stretchy. Doesn't need to be ultra glamorous - just formal enough to get her through the door.

We can get to a big shopping centre later this week, but neither of us really like shopping. So any
suggestions to help us narrow this down would be gratefully received.

Are you 100% sure it won't be cancelled? I'd be prepared for that and perhaps only go next weekend.

No suggestions though.

TheSpottedZebra · 11/07/2021 14:04

Jumpsuit! A jerseyish one so it's soft, then zhuzh it up as much as she wants with styling.

NellNorth · 11/07/2021 14:04

What height/ dress size is she? Is she happy for the dress to be fitted around the boob?

AChickenCalledDaal · 11/07/2021 14:15

It's on the 19th, postponed from the 1st, and they are hoping to run it unless announcements tomorrow make that impossible. Hence the last minute shopping!

She about 5ft 6 and size 14. Still not much boob and very self-conscious. I'm guessing she'd prefer not fitted, but I can imagine anything remotely flattering that isn't.

What about a "buffet" dress. Very comfy and very fashionable tight now.

lotsofchooksnducks · 11/07/2021 15:21

Sit her down in front of the computer/laptop and get her to order 5 dresses from ASOS she might like.
Then she can try them on at home and work out which she likes best without wasting her time (and yours) on a shopping trip if she's not that interested.

Sheerheight · 11/07/2021 15:33

Have a look on the Mango website, they have loose fitting dresses and a black, strappy wide legged jumpsuit that looks smart and could work for prom.
Have tried to do links but can't suss it out on the phone.

Sheerheight · 11/07/2021 15:39

Eg the satin midi dress

waltzingparrot · 11/07/2021 15:48

This doesn't look structured. Presume you'd have to order it to collect next week.

Thanks all - you've got my mind a bit more focussed now!

Don't waste your time on a trip to the shops, I went to look for a dress recently for a wedding and the stick was appalling.
Therefore I just ordered lots of dresses online most with free delivery to try at home.

justaweeone · 11/07/2021 16:33

As a previous poster suggested, what about a jumpsuit?

Marianicka · 11/07/2021 16:37

What about a formal trouser suit? I had my bridesmaids in off/white tuzdedos with a boob tube underneath. They looked fantastic, neither are girly girls at all.

Roominmyhouse · 11/07/2021 16:44

Very have loads of nice dresses and delivery is usually pretty quick.

Saisong · 11/07/2021 16:50

I ordered a couple of dresses for my y9 DD from ASOS. She hasn't worn a dress for about 6 years (and that was only because she was my bridesmaid). We flicked through the skater dress/midi dress category and she picked the ones she hated the least. Now they've arrived she is pretty happy with a soft grey tulle style bridesmaid dress. The fit guide on the site is actually excellent - put all your measurements in and it suggests a size (which might be different for each dress) based on a % that previous customers with similar measurements rated the fit. Was quite a long lead time on regular delivery, so you might need to pay more for quicker turnaround.

Getting shoes to match is going to be way harder (am seriously thinking of just sending her to 'graduation' in trainers!)

SkyBlueKitchen · 11/07/2021 16:50

@AChickenCalledDaal I have one that might work. I'll PM you.

ElspethFlashman · 11/07/2021 17:35

Yeah you basically have to go for ASOS, Premier delivery, and buy loads. Then a fitting session at home.

ElspethFlashman · 11/07/2021 17:42

Look at this one for instance, very easy to wear.

AChickenCalledDaal · 11/07/2021 17:43

Saisong you are not wrong about shoes. It's highly likely she'll be in a shiny new pair of Converse - possibly sparkly so as to convince school she's being "glamourous"!

This looks like a roomy fit and a little sophisticated as well. Ignore the younger model, I think this is much more of a teen dress. www.next.co.uk/style/st822647/a04476#A04476
