This dress, but cheaper

I really like this dress for a couple weddings/events I have this year, but don't particularly want to spend £285 on it.

Could anyone help me find similar at a lower price? Ideally below £75ish

And the OP dress isn't tight - which is why I like it!

The straps can be pulled on your shoulders too for the ceremony, if it was more appropriate

@livingoffcoffee

You could rent it. www.hurrcollective.com/listings/the-butterfly-dress

Or, you could buy it, wear it yourself and then earn some money back by renting it.

Lovely dress OP, if its something you’ll get a lot of wear out of i’d just go for the original.

Also some of the wedding etiquette is something i’ve only seen on MN, can be absurd at times!

@wedswench

I hate to be a party popper but... red? At a wedding?
Is that a new rule I haven’t heard of?
Paq · 10/07/2021 15:55

Another vote for just buying the one you love.

Comebloodyon · 10/07/2021 15:58

Op the original one is gorgeous! Treat yourself

Comebloodyon · 10/07/2021 16:02

What size are you? I've found it for £174 and there's only one left!

Nohomemadecandles · 10/07/2021 16:02

There's nothing traditionally wrong with red at a wedding, I don't think.

I don't know if that's a "suitable" wedding guest dress if it's a day time wedding but it is a beautiful dress. It's more date night to me.

Comebloodyon · 10/07/2021 16:04

I've sent you a PM!

Comebloodyon · 10/07/2021 16:19

Op please come back

leopardspotsdotdotdot · 10/07/2021 16:20

Depop has it in blush?

livingoffcoffee · 10/07/2021 16:34

I had to figure out how to get to my PMs @Comebloodyon! You're a star but unfortunately that one isn't my size, I need an 8.

Though I think this thread has convinced me maybe it's not the right dress for a wedding. I'm still going to try to to buy the original dress, maybe will search on eBay/Depop.

The S&B section is definitely the nicest of Mumsnet..even with the strict wedding dress code!

Ah that's a shame. There are lots of Reformation dresses on sale at the moment at net a porter, the outnet and matches. You might be able to bag a bargain!

Purplecatshopaholic · 10/07/2021 16:52

What on earth is wrong with red at a wedding? Genuinely don’t get that at all!

Thewinterofdiscontent · 10/07/2021 16:58

I agree it’s not the colour as such, it’s the combination of colour and style. Together they’re too evening/date night,/party hearty.
I don’t think a black version would work for similar reasons but a navy or blue might.
I quite like this Quiz version. www.quizclothing.co.uk/clothes/00100025061.html.

I’m going to keep looking for a cheaper red version. You’re right most are body con !

I always thought wearing red for a wedding meant you’d slept with the groom 😬

Three0fivepointfour · 10/07/2021 17:05

I came on here to say rent it via Hurrcollective but pp beat me to it.

I love it for a wedding. Don’t go near black accessories. Try something really clashy like neon green or bright pink.

wedswench · 10/07/2021 17:07

Sorry I'm not very traditionalist at all but I always heard white and red we're no nos. Quick google search confirms.

Something understated or conservative but red would be fine but full on tight, red, low cut knock out dress like that and I'd expect to put a few noses out of joint. It is beautiful though!

Nohomemadecandles · 10/07/2021 17:13

I've just googled it and it might be more of an American tradition not to wear red. It certainly isn't a set in stone "English tradition". There's a quite a lot of references to southern states etc.
Like a lot of things, it will have crept into our ever changing culture over the years.
Gawd, like wedding etiquette needed more complications Grin

Bahaha I'm definitely going to be thinking about that when I go to a wedding now! 😂

Of course it doesn’t.

Kinda agree, but you could do red dress with white spots! That takes the edge off the sexy vibe, and no bridal white :)
ineedsun · 10/07/2021 18:56

Bugger. I wore red to my daughters wedding and I definitely haven’t slept with my son in law.

weekend2021 · 10/07/2021 19:05

Nothing wrong with wearing red to a wedding unless it’s an Indian wedding, where traditionally, the bride wears red I believe?
