Garment steamer... My life has been changed

Nobranothanks · 04/07/2021 20:41

I figured you lot would appreciate my excitement! I'm awful at ironing... Like absolutely shocking!

Bought myself some summer dresses and established after the first wash that they are unwearable without an iron! Also discovered that dd's school dresses need ironing.

this arrived today and my life has been changed forever!!! How have I got to 34 and not realised that such a thing existed?!

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for clothes steamer recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best clothes steamers page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful.

Which steamer do you recommend?

ZaraW · 05/07/2021 06:56

I have the Steamery it's rubbish, takes forever to get creases out. It's quicker for me to iron.

JazzerMcCreary · 05/07/2021 07:05

Ooh. I don’t iron. I hate it. But DH never shakes things out of the washer/dryer, leaving them insanely creased, which infuriates me no end. This might be the answer…

Nobranothanks · 05/07/2021 08:09

@JazzerMcCreary this is exactly the issue I have. He also thinks he's being amazingly helpful putting the washing on however rams the drum so full it's unreal and then everything ends up a big crumpled mess

I have a hand held cordless one but it doesn’t seem to do much at all. What exactly are you using @Nobranothanks?

FunnyWonder · 05/07/2021 08:17

@Menora that is utterly brilliant. 6lb!

@poorpaws and @MegBusset great, you're both similar to me, as I've lost 1lb.

I'm very pleased as it was nothing last week and I vowed to give up the Saturday self sabotage - but didn't! So I can't be anything but satisfied with 1lb.

Off to get changed for my run/plod. I've been up for ages and if I don't go now, I'll start looking for excuses not to.

Have a good day everyone.

FunnyWonder · 05/07/2021 08:18

Aw crap, wrong thread .... how did I do that? Sorry!GrinGrin

alittlefishy · 05/07/2021 08:43

I need to know what this steamer is! Please someone with a good one recommend it to me as I am a time poor dress wearer and I need this in my life

alittlefishy · 05/07/2021 08:44

Don't worry @FunnyWonder I once posted about stair gates in adult children

KatharinaRosalie · 05/07/2021 08:53

I have Steam One steaming station, plus the handheld one like in OP for travelling. Really amazing, just hang the clothes up and glide it over. No need to worry about beads or sequins or similar, and you can also use it on silk or cashmere.

Nobranothanks · 05/07/2021 09:47

In my op I think I put a link?

It's this one

It looks a bit if a faff to me. I bought a kick arse steam iron that sits on a stand that holds the of water. It’s very steamy, efficient and quick, so ironing is no longer a horrible chore. Expensive yes, but a game changer.

Just found this thread and I am desperate to know what steamer the original post linked to - the link is broken now! OP, if you're still there, would you mind posting the make and model pretty please? ~begs~

ZealAndArdour · 29/07/2021 21:57

@alrightfella

Careful with the crease release, I’ve got some and any overspray that on the floor makes the carpet very slippy!!!

GuyFawkesDay · 29/07/2021 22:04

Crease release is basically silicon.

Steamers are what all the film & TV costume bods use. Far better than irons and kinder on fabric too

Must invest but as DH irons everything I shall keep on with my current arrangement 😆

ThankYouVeryMuchGerry · 29/07/2021 22:15

I should get this, I spend far too much on having my ironing done!

The links seem to be broken, does anyone know what steamer it is please?

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 29/07/2021 22:23

I am obsessed with my steamer. I have a handheld one that's corded. The water reservoir is small and lasts for about the size of a maxi dress. But the handle is very comfortable to hold and is slim enough to fit easily up in a dress / small tshirt / kids clothes. I see some hand held ones with a bulkier reservoir underneath but I really like mine and find it so easy to use. I even bring it with me on holiday! I've not ironed a single thing in 4 years. It's my most used appliance other than kitchen stuff.

The one I have is this one. amzn.to/2V3yBDN

But if you have a whole load of clothing to do then you might want a big one like this that the shops use. amzn.to/2TI6fOR

I joined the thread to say exactly this! Did a very impressive football-style ‘knee skid’ across the sitting room carpet after wielding the crease release spray.

Mumski45 · 30/07/2021 00:30

Oh I've been looking at these for a while. DD is getting married soon and bridal party will all be getting ready at my house so was looking to invest in one of these for last minute crease removal.

Problem is DH does all our ironing so unless he is converted then it won't get used afterwards.

Ironically if I buy a rubbish one it's even less likely to get used so want one that works better than an iron. Any recommendations?

Rainbowshit · 30/07/2021 00:40

I bought one for a bridesmaid dress. Totally converted. So much easier than ironing.

I've linked two in my post earlier
Ulysses · 30/07/2021 06:53

I got one for taking on holiday and it was great for things that were previously ironed but crushed in transit and needing a refresh.
I have been using it since I came back but would say for me it’s not the holy grail of being a permanent replacement. It’s quicker than get the ironing board and iron out (I’ve got a steam generator which can take a while to start off) out for one garment but not for several. It is nicer to use on fiddly items like gathered dresses but would rather use the iron for school uniforms and shirts.

FloofyCushion · 30/07/2021 06:58

Anyone else getting a forlorn looking labrador when they click the link?

PeachMelba78 · 30/07/2021 06:58

I have had one from Lidl for ages.
I only steam/iron when I’m about to wear something, so it stays in my room. Great for all my delicate tops and better than an iron on fiddly bits.
My wife still prefers to iron though.
