What to do with horrible, fine, flat, bla hair?

What would you do with this? I hate my hair, I just don't know what to do with it anymore. Having it cut next week. It's just stringy nothingness.

It looks in great condition.
If I were you I would cut it into a bob or layer it (might have to be longer for that)

FindingMeno · 02/07/2021 11:51

I have no idea what it's called, but one of those cuts where its graduated up from the bottom layers would really look good.

Bloomingwild282 · 02/07/2021 11:53

Would layering make it look even thinner though? I'm growing out the colour so I'm tempted to lop off the dead blonde ends. Ugh, it's depressing.

What about some extensions to add fullness/volume?
I know someone who got them for that reason and it made a massive difference

Bloomingwild282 · 02/07/2021 11:56

I can't afford extensions unfortunately.

I think you're being too harsh on yourself, your hair looks lovely and in great condition
I have fine hair too and currently have just 1 line of extensions to add length and volume. As pp said it does make a difference and I'm loving having long, swishy hair atm. Hair extensions are nowhere near as expensive as they used to be so you may find they are more affordable than you think if you fancy a change.

FindingMeno · 02/07/2021 12:02

I think layers on the top section wouldn't work, but graduating it up underneath increases volume for me.

XiCi · 02/07/2021 12:03

And yes you are right, layering is no good for fine, thin hair. Just makes it look thinner.

XiCi · 02/07/2021 12:04

Could you experiment with a beach wave look? It's a really nice length for that and would add volume

Malin52 · 02/07/2021 12:05

I have very fine thin hair. Much thinner than yours. I had mine in the same style as yours for years. I cut it short. Never looked back. Went in looking and feeling old and haggard. Left feeling young and exuberant!

Just annoyed I hadn't done it years ago!

ThisShouldBe · 02/07/2021 12:15

Have similar hair and have been, since the age of about 13, buying wonder devices and gadgets (none of which worked) - rollers, pump it up diffusers, hot brushes, bump-its, crimpers, volumisers..... you name it!

I think the following would work

  1. Accepting your lot and seeing the positives such as the shine of your hair and how manageable and quick to dry it presumably is (can't follow this advice myself)
  1. Extensions - I'm too scared of getting stuck in a cycle with these and overall the idea just doesn't appeal but they can look incredible
  1. Short hair - I'm too scared. I have never had hair shorter than what you have got now.
ThisShouldBe · 02/07/2021 12:17

Therfore I will be rushing off to buy the next wonder product someone recommends. Maybe ghd/tresemme/revlon will succeed where babyliss/ philips/ remington have failed? I am a hair gadget marketer's DREAM

What @ThisShouldBe says - nail on the head. This is the only thing that’s sort of helped me come to terms with my hair - I can blow dry it in about 3 minutes and it dries pin straight so I can just walk out of the door.

I think the style it is in now is very flattering on you OP - looks very healthy and sleek which I think is in now, rather than the very long boho style which was in a few years back. Don’t be hard on yourself Smile

And don’t, I repeat don’t get layers! If you really are like me and have extremely thin fine hair you just look ridiculous.

Garraty47 · 02/07/2021 12:20

I use volumizing dry shampoo. It helps to an extent.

Occasionally I'll back comb a section underneath to give it some lift but not often because it wrecks your hair.

I hate my floppy flat hair.

Malin52 · 02/07/2021 12:21

Search for pixie cut fine thin hair on Google. I was inspired by Yolanda Hadid on RHOBH when she went from a long bob to a pixie and looked amazing.

Sheerheight · 02/07/2021 12:23

Doesn't look that bad, just keep it cut in a short bob.

Londontown12 · 02/07/2021 12:31

You have lovely hair !! Keep it blunt I wouldn’t change cut other than keeping it blunt and solid on the perimeter! Add some waves XX

elsaesmeralda · 02/07/2021 12:31

I have your exact hair. It is so soft and flat when I wash it, it always looks better after a couple of days dirt in it 😆
Layers ruined my hair, made it look even Lanker and I couldn't do a thing with it, never again!
I keep mine collar bone length, have a blunt cut and slightly graduated. Shorter is better it gives the illusion that's it's thicker than it is and it looks healthier imo.
I also use a root boosting powder the morning after washing just to give it some texture , I wave it too and that helps it look less fine and a few spritz of dry shampoo does wonders

SwordPlay · 02/07/2021 12:32

I also think your hair looks lovely. Whatever you're doing care-wise it's obviously working.
Have you tried putting in some nice hair clips? That's what I'd do if I had your hair xx

lazylinguist · 02/07/2021 12:53

Your hair is similar to mine except yours is a bit shorter, in much better condition and less thin! Mine is also covered in broken hairs. I periodically get utterly sick of it and have it chopped off into a very short bob or a pixie.

I'm off to the hairdressers on Tuesday for the first time since before the first lockdown. Stylewise I'm going for something like this. Mine is dark blonde/light brown and I'm also going to have a few ash blonde highlights in the top.

I have very similar hair and have recently discovered that if I don't comb it through after washing (i.e. keep the Medusa look), allow it to dry like that and THEN very gently brush it through, it have significantly more body and movement.

I also put it up in a loose, twisted bun on the very top of my head most nights after very slightly dampening it. Again, it has some movement and volume in the morning.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 02/07/2021 13:15

I have the same hair. There isn’t really a solution, you need to accept it. Don’t put layers in though, they make it look worse. Dry shampoo helps, or those sea salt sprays can work. I wish I had the bone structure for a pixie cut, but too old and fat for that!

Bobbybobbins · 02/07/2021 13:20

I have the same type of hair and mine is frizzy too. I hate it. I had it v short when I was younger but I have big glasses since I got sick of contacts and think it'd be a bit Deirdre Barlow...

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 02/07/2021 13:38

Ogx purple shampoo has made a big difference, as does colouring/highlights. Otherwise not much you can do - like you said, it dries poker straight with no effort!

Agree with whoever it was who said not to brush/comb it out before drying.

Bloomingwild282 · 02/07/2021 14:01

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply. I think I'll just have half an inch off the length (really want to loose the blonde) and I might ask to have it a bit shorter at the back. No layers. Interesting tip about not brushing it after it'd been washed, I've never done that so will give it a go.

To the poster who said look at the positives, you're right, it does have some. It dries quickly, it's poker straight, not much grey and the hair that I have got has survived chronic illness and chemotherapy so well done those strands!
