Natural blondes and grey hair

I have naturally dirty blonde hair which has the occasional red and brown hairs running though it. Over the past year or two (I’m mid 40s) I’ve noticed more colourless hairs, for want of a better description, which I’m assuming are my grey hairs. I’m the only one in my family with blonde hair so I’ve no idea what it’s going to look like when I go fully ‘grey’. Any natural blondes out there who have gone grey - if so what type of grey, do you colour it or tone it now.

My mum had this hair, as do I. Hers just got lighter and lighter over the years from honey to ash then eventually white blonde as the colourless overtook the pigmented hair. It was kept short and layered though.
Mine is waist length and the roots are dark compared to the length so the colourless hair stands out a lot at the root. I've been DIY lightening the roots with John frieda spray to blend it, which works a treat but is apparently terrible for it, so need to stop!

dun1urkin · 30/06/2021 13:23

I’m only here as in the same boat. My hair is honey blonde with a touch of strawberry and at the moment my ‘greys’ (actually whites, or colourless as you describe) are pretty much unnoticeable apart from to me, and upon close inspection by others.
I haven’t ever seen a natural blonde go grey so have absolutely no idea what to expect either.
Hope someone comes to tell us, soon Grin

I was very blonde as a child / teenager. It got darker with age but then started turning lighter again from around age 50. I'm probably 75% grey now but it was so gradual I barely noticed it happening and I'm only really aware of it when I get it cut and see it all over the floor afterwards. I don't use anything on it and I'm very happy with it (and feel very lucky too).

Darklane · 30/06/2021 14:39

I was blonde, warm blonde a bit strawberry, parents one blonde one redhead. From my early thirties it just began to get lighter & lighter till now it’s pure white, not a single coloured hair in it. I like it. Wear it in a shoulder length bob.

Brogues · 30/06/2021 19:44

It sounds like it might just turn lighter then. One streak is already noticeably lighter but as it’s against my face it looks purposefully done. It’ll be strange having lighter hair! Looking forward to seeing what happens over the coming years.

Did anyone hair texture change then? I know people with greys often complain about it but my colourless hairs feel the same as the blonde and red. It’s only the few brown hairs that are more coarse.

Do you recon Gillian Anderson and Nicole Kidman are now natural grey versions of their blonde and red or are they still dyeing but a different shade?

Darklane · 30/06/2021 20:29

Mine is the same texture it always was, never went coarse as some say. Don’t know about them haven’t seen any recent photos, sorry.

Verite1 · 30/06/2021 23:17

I’m blonde going grey. Used to have highlights, but not had any for the last 18 months as the grey hides any roots. Texture has stayed the same. The grey is a nice grey/ash blonde colour but to be honest I’m toying with having a few highlights put in again.

Ruthietuthie · 01/07/2021 01:36

I actually like mine. My hair has grown white around my face, and against my blonde hair it looks like lightest baby blonde. I used to get highlights, to add some light to the parts of my hair that had gone dirty blonde, but now I don't need to. It means I need to go to the hairdressers less frequently too. Texture is the same.

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 01/07/2021 05:58

Somebody on here recommended Superdrug wash in wash out tinted shampoo and it is AMAZING. I use it daily (the colour needs to build up initially) and am so grateful to the poster who mentioned it.

WaltzingBetty · 01/07/2021 07:16

It will just go lighter.

There actually isn't any such thing as 'grey' hair

The hair grows through white. It's the mix of white hair with your original colour that produces the grey. So blondes are more likely to go silvery faster than brunettes who may go salt and pepper for a while

bunburyscucumbersandwich · 01/07/2021 07:29

My mum was blonde, when her hair started going grey it went very corse and wiry. She'd always had thick hair, but it needed a lot of styling to make it look good when it was going grey.

dreamingofsun · 01/07/2021 07:52

mine used to be same colour as yours. texture hasnt changed as i got older (except maybe a bit softer post menopause as no need to condition now) but it went light grey. personally i didnt like the colour and son commented on how old it made me look. i have highlights now - blondish and redish. personally i think these look much better on me than grey and i get compliments from people including those who are much more fashionable than me

thedevilinablackdress · 01/07/2021 07:53

My DM too. Had ash-y blond hair that looks amazing with the grey through. It blends so well and the texture looks the same.
My DF had almost black hair and went white really quickly, also looks great.

Tehmina23 · 01/07/2021 08:00

My hair is naturally dark blonde with now white bits coming through which I really hate so get highlights which cover them up.
The highlights make me look brighter as I'm too pale.

Run247 · 01/07/2021 09:34

You're so lucky! dark brown or black hair just makes you look like a raccoon once the whites start coming through!

AnyFucker · 01/07/2021 09:43

I have naturally dark blonde hair

My greys are coming through mainly underneath and framing the front

All through lockdown I grew my hair and had problems with hair loss due to COVID/stress/menopause

I have now found a great hair dresser who has cut it into a a shoulder length bob and put tiny fine blonde highlights in. She hasn’t tried to cover the grey but worked with it and preserved what she calls the “money streaks” at the hairline. It looks really natural, regrowth should be minimal and the texture is the same.

AnyFucker · 01/07/2021 09:47

Money piece trend

WineAcademy · 01/07/2021 09:54

I'm dishwater blonde, as it is charmingly described, and have been using John Frieda Sheer Blonde a few times a week for a couple of months now. My silver hair is multiplying at pace, but I now have a mixture of light blonde streaks, white, darker blondes and brown. I don't intend to dye it, I'll keep using this shampoo. My white hair is the same texture as everything else, too. I'm 40.

Brogues · 01/07/2021 10:54

@AnyFucker that’s exactly what has happened naturally to mine. Feeling chuffed I haven’t had to pay for it lol. It’s definitely a lighter blonde rather than whiter so I wonder if that bit will go whiter first too.

I don’t get on with John Frieda unfortunately for those who recommended it. Something in it makes me itch. I don’t mind the blonde wax he used to do though. Not sure if that’s still available.

I have tried the Superdrug colour effects wash in/out and I like the copper one best on me but don’t much rate the product itself iykwim.

It’s so interesting how hair changes and how it can be so different for everyone. Thanks for all the replies.

My mum went straight from blonde to white. I'm 60 now and my hair is still blonde with no hint of anything else.

My brunette friends are very jealous.

spiderlight · 01/07/2021 13:06

@HomeSliceKnowsBest - that might have been me Grin I'm slightly evangelical about it and was just about to mention it again because it works so well for me.

AnyFucker · 01/07/2021 13:11

If anybody is interested I can recommend a good toning/purple shampoo for blonde/grey hair

Kevin Murphy blonde angel wash is lovely. Keeps any brassiness at bay. Expensive but I just use it once a week.

Brogues · 01/07/2021 16:37

I generally roll with the brassyness Grin Who decided blonde should never be brassy anyway?

Try the Superdrug effects though but leave in for about half an hour rather than the five minutes they suggest. Makes my hair static but for the price to try it out you can’t go wrong really.

I’ve also got Philip Kingsley Pure Blonde Booster in the cupboard I’ve noticed Blush but not tried it yet. I’ll try it later and report back.
