How to look better

tonyharrisonboosh · 27/06/2021 17:36

I'm 37 and feeling thoroughly fed up with how tired and old I look.

I know there isn't a magic wand that will transform me into a perky twenty something but can anyone share what they have done to make a positive difference to the way they look and feel?

Exercise. It gives you a natural high and it also boosts your energy levels and changes your shape so clothes look better even if your weight stays the same. Making sure I eat enough protein, getting my iron levels checked (low iron levels can make you feel exhausted) and drinking plenty of water helps too.

From a product point of view, acid toner and (not at the same time) retinol and a good facial sunscreen so nothing gets worse!

I always find a hair cut / colour/ restyle brightens me up a bit ? A new outfit ? Make up ? A nice facial and or massage is a real treat too

From previous threads, judicious use of Botox is the answer but I’m too chicken.

Ermmmmname · 27/06/2021 18:15

Better hair care, I’ve got hair oil and home hair treatments. Just having lovely silky hair makes me feel great.

doorornottodoor · 27/06/2021 18:15

Exercise, sleep, water, give up alcohol , limit sugar, supplements, acid toner, retinol, sunscreen, dermastamp at a salon, FOREO Bear. Wee bit of filler around the jawline and cheeks to scaffold.

Exhausting! Grin I’ve 10 years on you.

doorornottodoor · 27/06/2021 18:16

Yes nice hair is youthful

savvy7 · 27/06/2021 18:20

Exercise is the absolute must.

MsAnnFrope · 27/06/2021 18:21

@doorornottodoor are you sure I gave to give up alcohol (looks at post dinner glass of wine)

I agree with this, I always feel a new hair cut feels like a treat.. mind you, maybe that's because I leave it about 2 years between cuts. Same with nails, if I get my hair and nails done I always feel a bit more polished. But depends if these are in your regular routine anyway I guess! They aren't for me.
Roomonb · 27/06/2021 18:27

Glycolic acid toner, brightens a bit and makes skin nice and smooth for make up. I use inkey list 10%.

Single biggest thing was to lose weight. I can now wear really nice youthful clothes without worrying about hiding problem bits. The better diet and excercise has also improved my skin and given me a glow.
Second was to get great hair. For me this has required subtle extensions but cut, colour whatever, as long as its healthy and shiny.
I have some botox too but the impact of this is way less than the weight and hair.

TheMotherlode · 27/06/2021 18:33

Drinking lots of water always helps for me. And chemical peels Grin

SocksAndTheCity · 27/06/2021 18:38

Losing weight (most of which I've now put back on and am trying to lose again) was the thing which made me feel better than anything else, but of the quicker/easier things, microblading by a country mile. It's taken years off my face.

Also spending silly amounts of money on lovely skincare and hair products, and painting my toenails Smile

SocksAndTheCity · 27/06/2021 18:40

I'd add getting your teeth fixed if they need it - I'm saving up for implants as I have quite a few missing on one side and I always notice if people have bad teeth. They don't have to look like fridge doors, just straight and nice.

doorornottodoor · 27/06/2021 18:43

Oh yes whiten teeth! No you don’t need to give up alcohol. I was doing it anyway. Probably helps though....

I think @ChiefInspectorParker’S advice is good general life advice.
But no amount of SPF or sleep will get rid of my quizzical forehead lines. I’m telling myself they give my face character.
Can’t make any such excuses for the middle age spread though.

Backhills · 27/06/2021 19:04

It's what everyone says and no one wants to hear. Exercise, lots of water and no refined sugar.

When you say microblading are you referring to eyebrows?
RunningFromInsanity · 27/06/2021 19:10

Eyebrows nicely shaped and tinted if needed.
Eyelashes tinted.
Eyes are a focal point and this should instantly neaten your face.

@ChiefInspectorParker I agree about feeling better physically impacting on how I look. Even if it’s just in my head!
I’m having a grieving/maudlin/hormonal weekend but normally I exercise and get outside everyday and people tell me I look “well” (unless the mean fat…)

Susannahmoody · 27/06/2021 19:16

Losing weight is absolutely vital for me to look polished. As a pp said, it's all linked : healthy eating habits leads to better skin, you look better so clothes fit better which equals more confidence, less alcohol means you sleep better, etc etc

What kind of exercise though, not being stupid. You might say walking, I am okay with that. But not exercising in other ways in gym or outdoors etc, so I guess you might of been even thinking of indoors, if so what do you advise.
SocksAndTheCity · 27/06/2021 19:22

@Toilenstripes yes I did, sorry!

I overdid the plucking in the early '90s and had barely anything left, plus the gap in between them was massively lopsided. When the new shape was drawn on the difference was jawdropping and I swear even my skin looks better.

I'll also add that getting new glasses this last week has really cheered me up Smile.
