A non padded plain bra for tween dd

Cupidity · 26/06/2021 22:14

Dd (11) is starting to need more support than her crop tops can provide.

I've done the clever bra measuring calculator thing and she's a 28-30DD. however she does not want a grown up bra with any lace or padding or embellishments.

Can anyone reccomened where to look?

My dd is a 28dd ( actually measures 24/25” at the ribs, so some 28s are a bit big but not all ) .
Would your dd prefer no wires ? This is plain and unpadded but has wires. www.bravissimo.com/products/porcelain-elan-non-padded-bra-pn156/
It is hard to get a plain bra that isn’t padded. Cosabella do a fairly plain one a bit like a crop top but more supportive (lace trim around the band, plain cups) but it is quite expensive.

SirVixofVixHall · 26/06/2021 23:10

My dd has mostly padded but also a few more bralet type soft bras, they are all quite lacy though.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 26/06/2021 23:14

Asda have completely non padded ones just thin material, these aren't great for body conscious tweens as nipples can be obvious and many wouldn't like that. Most of the ones I've gotten Dd are lightly molded but not padded and she prefers them to the thin fabric ones. Next do tween first bras which Dd likes as do Mand S.

Weedsgalore · 26/06/2021 23:19

Sloggi do plain cotton ones.
I found this website recently and thought this one looked good:

I’ve got no recommendations but try a moulded bra rather than padded sometimes but not always called T-shirt bras

DiscoJanet · 26/06/2021 23:59

I bought these from John Lewis recently for my 11yo, they're very good.

LucysSkyDiamonds · 27/06/2021 00:05

Can I ask, did you offer/suggest a bra to your dds or wait for her to ask? Dd recently started wearing crop tops but she's had a growth spurt (all over) and I think she might start needing actual support soon.

wisteriaandwhine · 27/06/2021 00:33

Don't confuse moulded cups with padded. Moulded cups usually don't have any padding (if they do, they are clearly labelled as such). The moulding is basically to ensure a smooth profile under clothes.

Which your daughter may appreciate if the kids in her school develop the nasty habit of embarrassing each other by doing things like trying to spot who is "cold" based on being able to see their nipples.

Also, wasn't there a discussion on another thread recently pointing to the research showing that bras don't actually provide any "support" in most cases and make zero difference to breast shape as we age, it's just a cultural garment we're conditioned to wear for modesty.

JM10 · 27/06/2021 00:37

I just got dd 11 one from m&s, no underwire, no padding. I did use two different calculators, one put her at 30DD and one at 34AA. We got 34AA and it fits perfectly. Maybe worth trying a few sizes?

londonscalling · 27/06/2021 00:38

I know it sounds the obvious choice, but M&S really do have a good choice of starter bras!

Divineswirls · 27/06/2021 03:28

You might find a 32 C is a better fit.

And non padded = nipples showing through

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 27/06/2021 08:14

@Cupidity what about sloggi?

Lots of plainer styles, wired, non wired to choose from. They have 30% off a lot of styles atm

Longestfewdaysupcoming · 27/06/2021 08:16

Padded are good for youngsters as they don’t irritate or show the nipples. Nipples can be very sensitive and the youngster can be self conscious so don’t write them off.

A 32C is only a good fit if the Ops DD measures 32 around her ribcage. Which would be quite large for an 11 yo girl.

I’m an adult size 12 and measure 31 around my rib cage.

Did you wait for her to ask when she needed pyjamas instead of babygrows? Pants instead of nappies? Age 5-6 instead of age 4-5 clothes?

Why would you wait for her to ask for a piece of basic clothing?

covidcloser · 27/06/2021 08:38

Sorry I feel like that reads so snappy and it wasn't meant to be. It was just supposed to be examples of how it's normal to progress and no, you shouldn't put your DD in the awkward position of having to ask for a bra. Sorry it came across badly.

I had a conversation with a parent in school last week who mentioned that her DD really needed to start wearing a bra as opposed to vests. Her DD doesn’t want to because she said she’s only 10, 10 year olds don’t wear bras. Mum thinks she needs one, dd doesn’t. I suggested she look at those pull on type bras that can be sold to DD as crop tops. She bought one for her and DD apparently loves it as it ‘isn’t a bra’. Sometimes, DDs don’t want to talk about bras but if it’s couched in another way they’ll be more amenable.

We get these ones. They are a three pack and both my dd's had them as their first bras and they both prefer them over any other.

The other place I've seen non padded bras is Asda. Theirs come in proper sizes.

Passthecake30 · 27/06/2021 08:49

@LucysSkyDiamonds my dd is at the same stage. I recently ordered loads of sizes for her and kept a couple ones that fit and now she has those to interchange with her crop tops. Come September when she starts secondary I’ll encourage bras for better coverage.

It did sound snappy, but I get you. Like Soontobe60 says, I was one of those girls who wasn't ready emotionally when my mum surprised me with bra shopping and it was awful. I raised the crop top issue with dd when I thought she might be more comfortable and she's happy out with her wide and varied selection that we bought but I don't want to push to fast either. I'm also conscious of my own hang ups from my adolescence trying to avoid her absorbing them.

Thanks, good idea.

Pinuporc · 27/06/2021 09:07

The problem with the plainer "starter" type bras is that alot of them assume a very small cup size. My DD grew very quickly but still has a narrow chest size. Her first bra was 30C but now she is 14 and 30D is looks too tight fitting (I wasnt able to get her measured last year) so I suspect shes gone up a cup size. I am 32A and the band is much too loose on her.
When I look online a lot of the larger cup size bras are lacy/push up/cleavage enhancing type bras which she hates!
She does prefer slightly padded ones for modesty though.

Frumpypigskin · 27/06/2021 09:19

could you please point me to the calculator you mentioned? I'm still confused how to work out bra size. I posted one on here ages ago and was told that it was the 'old fashioned' way of measuring.
Thank you

My daughter has found these very comfortable, they are moulded but not wired, she is very fussy! www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-willow-non-wired-bra/white/p5039080

sleepingbag · 27/06/2021 09:39

The almond one is good under white clothes, as is less visable.
