1920s themed party - could I wear this?

I would like to buy something that I can wear again and just accessorise for the party....would this work or would I look out of place if everyone was in sequinned flapper dressers?

Any other ideas for a simple dress I could use again?

I think the dresses you’ve picked out - while lovely - do scream 30s to me.

If you don’t suit the typical 20s dropped waist shapes, how about a more simple shape you do like in a colour you like with all the right 20s accessories?

Something like this for example: www.silkfred.com/boutiques/urban-touch/clothing/cowl-neck-satin-slip-cami-midi-dress-green (just a random search as you say you suit green and you have red hair)
With a few long gold or pearl necklaces, and the right hair accessories or headband, 20s style hair and make up I think something a little more simple would maybe fit in better than something which is a bit of a stronger/more unusual shape as per the dresses you have found.

It’s a bit like going to a 50s party with a dropped waist dress - it screams too much of one era.

Thanks so much for the feedback and links.

Yes I could get a plain slip style dress and go full hog on the accessories ..... fur stole a is great idea .... BUT I am buying that Ghost dress regardless ..... would get lots of use out of it. Whoopee!

They had fabulous trousers too

I’d go more for the 20s trouser look as @iklboo says. The 20s was when women first started to wear trousers as fashion - fantastic style.

Floisme · 19/06/2021 08:58

Yes I can't post any pics at the moment but if you google Coco Chanel there are some great pics of her wearing trousers, although I'm not sure if they're from the 20s or 30s.

idontlikealdi · 19/06/2021 10:35

Gorgeous but not 20s. When I went to a 20s party I got a beautiful flapper dress on eBay, also check out dance shoes for the right style.

Floisme · 19/06/2021 10:36

Ah the pic thing seems to be working again! This is the outfit I was thinking of - reasonably straightforward to copy and and I'd say glamorous enough for a party (although admittedly I've not been to any lately). I've a feeling the photo itself dates from the 30s but I reckon Chanel has enough links to the 20s for you to get away with it! I'm pretty sure she was already wearing trousers then.

I lecture history of fashion. Neither of those dresses bear any relation to the 1920’s. The green one is ‘30’s and the white one is 30’s or 40’s.

Drop waist, straight fitting, sleeveless are 20’s

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 19/06/2021 10:44

This.

Loads of cheap flapper dresses on ebay.

Wide trousers with stripe t shirt and pearls also quite 20’s

theotherfossilsister · 19/06/2021 10:47

I love the first dress. The model is gorgeous too which maybe influences me though. It is like a dream dress.

Floisme · 19/06/2021 10:54

Another Chanel in trousers pic, more likely to be 1920s judging by the hat plus she looks younger. Sorry it's a bit blurred - she's wearing a white waistcoat and shirt under the jacket. I love it that the trousers are cropped!

I think you should but the green dress as you love it & would wear it to other things..
And i'd buy a cheap 20s costume to wear to the party

We were invited to a 20s themed party a couple of years ago & I bough a flapper fancy dress set. It had a dropped waist & fringing. I bought lots of cheap long peal necklaces, fishnet tights & I had a feather headband
My hair was in a bob at that time so was perfect. I had a cigarette holder & kitten heeled mary jane shoes. It was perfect
Half the fun of fancy dress is wearing awful costumes!
Having said that, I hung mine up afterwards & actually wore it to 2 other themed fancy dress b'day parties afterwards. So I def got my money's worth!
I'd be worried that if I wore the green dress it would forever be tainted with novelty fancy dress in my mind

Hopdathelf · 19/06/2021 10:56

The OP has been clear she doesn’t want sleeveless, dropped waist or straight up and down so I don’t think a stream of people telling her that’s what constitutes a typically 1920s outfit is helping that much, particularly when she has been clear she knows that.

If the OP buys the first ghost dress and some typically 20s accessories what’s the worst that can happen? She won’t get kicked out the party and unless it’s a gathering of vintage enthusiasts, most people won’t even know or care. It’s a party, not a historical reenactment.

Buy the dress, feel good at the party, wear it again and again.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 19/06/2021 10:57

side note:

just realised how easy it will be to host a 2020 themed party in a hundred years: tracksuits & masks, done😁

I vote for the first one

UnreasonablyPissedOff · 19/06/2021 10:57

I also had a feather boa! Great 20s accessory!

Love the photo of coco Chanel but looks like she might have been in fancy dress herself in the 2nd one, judging by what the people behind her are wearing

Runningupthecurtains · 19/06/2021 10:58

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow
What is the 20's solution for those of us that the flapper dress just doesn't work on? As big busted hourglass I would look like a walking American fridge in a dropped waist dress. I need a waist on my waist.

Yes I was just looking at the other outfits too - marvellous Grin
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 19/06/2021 11:05

Runningupthecurtains

A mans wide leg suit with pearls
Matelot trousers with a wide stripe jersey top or t shirt
Mens Oxford bags with a fair isle sleeveless jumper over a shirt
Beach pyjamas
A pleated skirt with a hip length top.

Any of these photos. Women wore plus fours for sport.

This with a stripe top and headband thing.

Not the budgie smugglers!

Floisme · 19/06/2021 11:24

I think I think a man's suit with pearls might be my new favourite look.

Sssloou · 19/06/2021 11:39

@Hopdathelf - you made me laugh so much!

“It’s a party, not a historical reenactment.”

Love the floaty trouser look but maybe not quite glam enough for an evening party?

Thanks for all of the suggestions and yes I want to feel gorgeous and glamorous in an outfit that suits my shape.

Glad to be of service Grin

When I’ve gone to 20s or 30s events I’ve always worn trousers and dresses them up accordingly. A nice high waisted pair are good for hourglasses. Comfort and style over historical accuracy every time so long as you’re seen to be trying.

Hopdathelf · 19/06/2021 11:50

I’ll just leave these very glam trousers here.

Wow gorgeous!! I am loving all the turbans .... can see this all working with kimono jackets etc

Just wear the 30s thing seeing as you like it And if anyone says anything say it's late 20s..or that you've always been very fashion forward.
