Do you wash moisturiser off?

WindFlower92 · 13/06/2021 14:57

Okay so I know that the answer is no, but I can't find a moisturiser that sinks in well enough to let me apply foundation without little bits coming off in my hands! I applied moisturiser hours ago and I can still get bits coming off now. Are there moisturisers out there that work properly, or should I be washing it off? I feel so stupid for asking Grin

What moisturiser is it?
Some are worse than others

RogueV · 13/06/2021 15:01

Sounds like you need to exfoliate

Umberellatheweatha · 13/06/2021 15:02

On days I'm going to wear make up I usually put moisturiser on for half an hour (or more if pos) before hand and then wash it off a little before makeup. But I think if you leave a little on it shouldnt affect makeup staying power.

Though I have dry-normal skin so...
I used Nivea spf day cream before makeup last week and didnt notice any issues with the makeup not staying put. Think plenty of powder helps.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 13/06/2021 15:06

Do you exfoliate? It's called " pilling " and it usually happens if you don't exfoliate OR if you're applying foundation to quickly after your moisturizer. Also make sure you apply the water based products before the oil based.

doadeer · 13/06/2021 15:06

The mac strobe cream is good under makeup.
In the mornings I wear vit c serum and Spf 50 then a cc cream so I actually don't use a moisturiser anymore but I don't remember this happening... Is it the same regardless of the brand you use?

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 13/06/2021 15:08

Are you putting on more than you need?

Are you using a very silicone heavy moisturiser? If you’re using a silicone heavy moisturiser and foundation, you may find that it all just rolls up on your skin. You might be better off with a moisturising serum.

WindFlower92 · 13/06/2021 15:11

I currently use Olay Whip, but it's always happened so I've washed it off, but I read on here you shouldn't do that and I don't want to waste money by washing something off that I shouldn't! I do need to find a good face spf cream though so maybe that might make a difference? I don't think I exfoliate @Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel, but I cleanse, is that the same thing? I wash the cleanser off and put a vit c serum on before the moisturiser. I don't understand exfoliation as whenever I look for one on Boots' website it just comes up with cleansers, and I have dry skin which I've read you should use too much exfoliator products on! Skincare is a minefield Blush

You’ll also get it with silicones, I use any of the following moisturisers Honest one, Fenty or Lacura with no problems. From what I remember if they’ve both got silicones in you need to leave it a while in between. But by minimising silicone use, you should be able to stop it.

WindFlower92 · 13/06/2021 15:13

I use Olay Whip and then No7 BB cream for dry skin @BalladOfBarryAndFreda, I'm not sure about how silicone heavy they are?

I dont like the whip one much. I'll go see what one I have just now
dementedpixie · 13/06/2021 15:15

I have a L'Oréal Paris wrinkle expert one and it doesn't seem to pill like the whip one does

nutellamagnet · 13/06/2021 15:17

Exfoliators are either chemical (eg glycolic acid) or physical (ie a face scrub). They are different from cleansers.

You may not need a moisturiser in the morning especially in this heat. If you do, you may find it better with a lighter, or gel like formula.

lazylinguist · 13/06/2021 15:20

No you're not meant to wash off moisturiser. BB cream is meant to be moisturiser and foundation in one though, so unless you have dry skin, you may find that you don't actually need to use moisturiser before applying bb cream. I don't. Whereas when I use foundation rather than bb cream, I do need a moisturiser. I've never experienced what you describe as 'bits coming off' though. I just find that if I use moisturiser with bb cream, the bb cream goes on a bit slippily and my skin feels a bit shiny and greasy.

RodiganReed · 13/06/2021 15:20

Definitely sounds like silicone, which can ball up and 'pill' especially under make up. Try to avoid moisturisers with ingredients, that end in '..cone' eg dimethicone.

And to clarify you definitely shouldn't be washing off moisturiser (not until the end of the day when you're ready to wash anyway if that makes sense?), the whole point of moisturiser is to sit on the skin nourishing it and sealing in moisture, you will get zero benefit putting it on then taking it straight back off again.

CommanderBurnham · 13/06/2021 15:22

Could it be your foundation?

I get pilling with some creams but not all.

WindFlower92 · 13/06/2021 15:22

Thanks all, I'll probably try just using the BB cream and see what that does, and then have a look at other moisturisers for days that I'll be wearing makeup. What a pain!

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 13/06/2021 15:23

@WindFlower92 you'd know if you exfoliate Smile

Have a Google. You need to exfoliate , gently not too hard , to get rid of the dead skin and grime. Cleanser alone won't do that.

pinkcattydude · 13/06/2021 15:25

BB cream is usually used instead of moisturiser, and contains silicones. I use hot cloth cleanser by liz Earle daily but there are loads you can use

doadeer · 13/06/2021 15:26

A good starter exfoliate would be the Ren AHA tonic or Pixi Glow Tonic or Paula's choice BHA. After you cleanse but before a serum.

Good face Spf, I would recommend La Roche Poche, Altruist or Biore Watery Essence.

I don't know about others but for me a serum, moisturiser, Spf and cc cream is overkill. I use a bit of Matt primer to bring down my shine.

myfuckingfreezer · 13/06/2021 15:27

I don't think pilling has anything to do with exfoliating. It's the products working against each other and coming off. It's not dead skin.

As other said the culprit is usually silicone, especially if you're using a heavy foundation or a dry skin one.

LemonSwan · 13/06/2021 15:30

I have dry skin and a chemical exfoliator did the world of good! They can dry your skin if you over use them but if you use sparingly (say once a week) they will dramatically improve your skins barrier which controls moisture.

Glycolic acid was very moisturising and rich for me but worked well - not for everyone as so rich it can cause some to break out.

I also loved Lactic Acid.

I currently use Lotion p50 (a blend of lots of acids) all winter but giving it a break atm because of the sun levels and I work outside all day. I also find that very moisturising and dont apply anything other than Lait U Milk Cleanser and then the P50.

Suzi888 · 13/06/2021 15:34

Do you have greasy skin? I used to and skipped the moisturiser altogether.

bonzo77 · 13/06/2021 15:49

I get this so badly with anything that has silicone in it. I avoid it totally. Which rules out a lot of the serums.

WindFlower92 · 13/06/2021 15:52

My skin is very dry @Suzi888, but the moisturiser is quite greasy I guess!

So do I exfoliate just once a week or more? Would it be better morning or evening?

I make my own face mask.
One shot of ground coffee beans.
One shot of honey.
One shot of coconut oil.

I use it every other night. I leave it on for 5-10 minutes then gently wash it off. I follow it up with a bit of argan oil.

It’s made a huge difference to my skin and my the look of my make up.

I would have thought it would be too oily (I’m quite spot prone) but during the first lockdown I had to improvise when I ran out of my usual stuff.
