Sandals for teenager

DD is 15. She's considered by her friends to be very stylish which baffles me, but I accept I'm not 15 so let her get on with it. Usual outfits are either massive tracksuits and trainers, low waist jeans or combats with crop tops to show her belly button piercing (for those of a certain age it's All Saints all over again) or minuscule dresses.

However everything is worn with trainers, usually big black airforce.

She went on a date last night in a lovely (if tiny) pale summer dress with big black boot like trainers!
Having lunch today she realised that her ankles and feet are white while her legs are brown. I suggested (gasp) sandals.

She was horrified.

Apparently "no one wears sandals."
Can this be true? Do all teenage girls have sweaty trainer feet all summer?

If anyone's fashionable teen has summer footwear that isn't insta t social death could you let me know what they are?

Eh, i’m 22, would say that sandals aren’t all that “in” but sliders are. Usually jewelled, fur or some form of design on them. That’s what a lot of people in my age group 19+ wear

DuesToTheDirt · 12/06/2021 13:07

Sliders, I just don't get it, so ugly! (Of course I'm old and unfashionable, what do I know?)

PattyPan · 12/06/2021 13:15

SIL is slightly older but has a similar style and she wears sliders, could those be an option? Pretty little thing sells sandals so I’m sure teenagers are wearing them!

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 12/06/2021 13:19

I like the big trainers look although I don’t go for it myself as I’m OLD (45). Love a DM though. My friend’s daughter is an athletic 15 year old and looks amazing in them with dresses or shorts.

I loathe sliders though. I don’t think they look good with anything. But as I said I’m old!!

Love a nice chunky sandal though

When she goes out to a party, DD wears a tiny dress with Airforce 1s.

It's been a long time since she went out to a party mind you so her taste might have changed! The only sandals she's owned for 3 years is a pair of sliders for holiday.

BeaMinus · 12/06/2021 13:23

Sliders

MissKeithsNeice · 12/06/2021 13:25

For some people, trainers always look better. Sweaty feet is a small price to pay.

ShinyGreenElephant · 12/06/2021 13:25

Yep sliders

Pinuporc · 12/06/2021 13:31

I am old (early 40s!) and think sliders are really horrible and seem to have been around way too long compared to anything else considered fashionable
My teen DD only seems to have hi-top converse, fila disruptors or DMs. She has literally never mentioned any sort of sandals that she would be seen in, although she did borrow my basic flip flops at a stony beach recently. (It wasnt busy and there was no one she knew)

I remember my BIL pointing out my jewelled flip flops to his teenagers years ago saying how nice they were. Poor girls obviously hated them and were struggling for something to say without being rude. One of them came up with "I think I would wear them if I was an older person". I was about 32 at the time, I instantly felt about 82!Blush

Sliders are OK, but definately in are chunky sandal like the Dr Martin ones, but everyone is dounf them now.

DD is the same age. She’s wearing big white Crocs today....

glassfloor · 12/06/2021 16:21

So.... are shoes just not a "thing" any more for this age group? Crikey.

She does have sliders but has such narrow feet that frabkly wearing them is a lot of hard work with the sheer gripping required.

Thanks to those who suggested some sandal options. I showed her and she didn't wince which I'm taking as a win, but also accepting that it looks like they do all just wear trainers.
Is there an age limit? Some sort of "now you are 19 my child here are the comfy airy flat sandals that look pretty with dresses. Welcome to womanhood. You've got 40 years before Hotters so make the most of it."
I'm obviously old now and was never stylish even when young so I think my best bet is to stop suggesting things and just go back to occasionally muttering about skirt lengths (I'm fond of, "Is it a belt?" which we both enjoy.)

Haha this is my DD too! Enormous white Fila trainers in every weather. I was really hoping there might be options I could suggest to her here but my DD can't wear sliders due to hypermobility - she just can't keep them on her feet.

TBH I'm more relieved not to have my imagined battles with her over wearing high heels so maybe sweaty trainers aren't the worst thing to worry about Grin

Exactly. At her age I was teetering about in ridiculous heels so I suppose this is progress.....

Dd is 17 (nearly 18) and wouldn’t be seen dead in sandals. Grin She spends her life in doc martens or huge gothic type platform trainers from Koi.

VanCleefArpels · 12/06/2021 16:48

Honestly at 15 please let her choose what she wants to wear and only comment/suggest if asked. Your showing her things is a covert way of indicating you don’t approve of what she does like to wear. I agree it’s a ridiculous look (pretty dress, carefully curled hair, full face of slap and chunky trainers) but now’s the time for us to bite our tongues!!

SoupDragon · 12/06/2021 16:53

I agree it’s a ridiculous look

I did my teenage years in the 80s. I suspect my parents thought I looked ridiculous but obviously they were wrong...

Thunderface · 12/06/2021 16:55

My dd is 15 and occasionally wears Ipanema flip floppy things like these, not when she is with her friends though.

omgthepain · 12/06/2021 16:56

Honestly, the only time I comment usually is when the skirts are so short that pants are visible....! However there we were in the garden, eating lunch in the sun barefoot and her little white feet were an entirely different colour to her legs and she started the conversation. Anyway, her best friend is round. They're carefully fake tanning their feet (why?? No one will see them...!) and there's some sort of group chat thing with the wider friendship group going on about the Doc Marten sandals. However I'd bet money they'll all end up staying with trainers that will stink after a lovely hot summer! Thanks for everyone's comments- It's been informative. I wonder if this generation will ever do uncomfortable footwear? I kind of hope not.

Same here except it's DM boots or converse.
Last week a tiny win, DM platform sandals! 🙂
