Wearing a skirt that is 19 years old?

It’s my favourite summer item, but rarely worn as it’s so summery. It’s nearly ankle length, tiered cotton skirt, with broiderie anglaise and some scalloped edging. It’s lined so not see through. My DH has expressed surprise that I want to wear it as it’s so old. But it still looks ok and there’s lots of long length floaty skirts about which aren’t as nice as my vintage one IMO!
Will be probably be worn with black vest and wedges.

Sounds brilliant!!

Ppl are desperate to get their hands on "vintage" stuff like that-very on trend.

Wear it with a triumphant smile

ThursdayWeld · 12/06/2021 12:39

Am very interested to hear what your DH's fashion credentials are Grin

ThursdayWeld · 12/06/2021 12:40

And, well done for still being able to fit into it!!

SpamIAm · 12/06/2021 12:41

Sounds like a timeless item to me, and one that happens to be particularly in this season. So crack on! And well done for keeping it white for 19 years 😂

I have many clothes older than my relationship/marriage.

Fashion goes in circles and I always buy quality clothes that last. If I see a trend coming back in I'm often ahead of the game Wink

Just double checked that - definitely no yellowing so it’s ok on that count Grin

How lovely. Better than fast fashion and probably actually of reasonable quality.

Passthecake30 · 12/06/2021 12:51

Also well done that it still fits!
I’d be telling my do that he was just jealous Grin

DD is wearing a bunch of my clothes from the early nineties at the moment. With confidence and a good eye anything is possible.

Love this OP, good for you! I think summer styles are generally pretty timeless. Floaty skirts, floral dresses, broderie anglaise… it doesn’t age. Only new fashion in the last few years I’d say is the trend for midi-length dresses with denim jackets and trainers.

19 years is impressive though. I’m trying to think what I would have been wearing summer 2002. Was that boho-chic? Sienna Miller era? Long beads and…floaty skirts!!

Yes that right, boho era! I bought it pre kids, and actually have a picture of me holding a tiny 3 week old DS in it, so I’d never throw it out. This DS is now 6’2’’ and left high school yesterday Grin

There's a woman in Melbourne called Yvonne Dite who still wears a dress she was wearing when she met her husband in 1968 - the story was in the news when its designer Carla Zampatti died recently.
Your skirt is a spring chicken compared to that dress!

BreakfastOfWaffles · 12/06/2021 13:04

I still wear a leather jacket I have had for 25 years!

TrobadoraBeatrice · 12/06/2021 13:08

Earlier this week I was wearing a skirt my gran bought for my mum in 1979! I've had it for over 20 years and love wearing it in the summer.

Howshouldibehave · 12/06/2021 13:11

I presume your DH just doesn’t like the skirt?

butteredbarmbrack · 12/06/2021 13:12

I wore some Gap palazzo pants this week that I remember buying as a student - I graduated in 1994 Grin

Gullible2021 · 12/06/2021 13:16

Nahhhh it's vintage. Plus fashion goes in 20 year cycles anyway so you are almost bang on trend...ahead of the trend actually.

bookish83 · 12/06/2021 13:16

I wish I had kept some things from 20 years ago! I still remember things I loved from then, and actually my 'style' doesn't change much... some of the trends Just come back anyway

I want to see the skirt 😬

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 12/06/2021 13:18

This week I wore a long tiered black floaty summery skirt that I reckon is around 20 years old. I was delighted to find it in my wardrobe having been searching for appropriate summer work wear for the first time in ..... Around 30 years! It was perfect and admired by a younger colleague who said she also used to have something similar and is gutted she no longer has it. She's probably searching eBay as we speak for a similar skirt. Some summerwear sadly (UK weather!!) gets very little use so I likely to last for many years.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 12/06/2021 13:20

Blow. That should be 20 years. Not 30!! It hasn't been THAT long 🤔. Also didn't need it last year as locked down and working from home before the summer came.

bonfireheart · 12/06/2021 13:22

I thibk it's great OP, esp in this era of fast fashion and what it's doing to the environment.

barbrahunter · 12/06/2021 13:26

coincidentally, I am today wearing a pair of cotton cropped jeans that I bought circa 2007. There's very few clothes I have that seem to fit me just right, but these are one such item. I plan to wear them until either they fall apart, or I get too big for them. Respect, OP.

Floisme · 12/06/2021 13:36

That sounds great, op, it's so satisfying when this works out. I think my longest running, regularly worn item is the jacket from a 1940s suit that I paid a fiver for in the late 70s. I can't get the skirt past my arse any more - and probably wouldn't have much use for it anyway now - but the jacket's still a good fit and works well.

I wish I'd been better at predicting what would be worth keeping. I could cry when I think of some of the gems I've let go, but at the same time, I've also kept some dross.

CMOTDibbler · 12/06/2021 13:56

I don't wear it often but thats as I don't need it that often, but I have a black brocade ankle length evening coat which I bought in a vintage shop in Oxford when I was 17 and my mum put a new lining in as the original silk one was shredded. That was 30 years ago, and goodness knows how old it is now but it still looks great.
