Wearing a skirt that is 19 years old?

Mellonsprite · 12/06/2021 12:36

It’s my favourite summer item, but rarely worn as it’s so summery. It’s nearly ankle length, tiered cotton skirt, with broiderie anglaise and some scalloped edging. It’s lined so not see through. My DH has expressed surprise that I want to wear it as it’s so old. But it still looks ok and there’s lots of long length floaty skirts about which aren’t as nice as my vintage one IMO!
Will be probably be worn with black vest and wedges.

Don't worry about the age, I would imagine that most people will have got rid of their's. I bought a lovely sun dress from an end of lines shop 20 years ago, I wore it from before I got married, through my pregnancy & every summer since, it will break my heart when it falls apart.

Nat6999 · 12/06/2021 22:59

That's just reminded me my mum has an old Ghost style dress of mine from M & S hung up in her wardrobe, I must ask if I can try it on & see if it fits, I had it for my parent's Ruby wedding party in 2000.

Sometimesonly · 12/06/2021 23:01

If you like it, wear it! I still wear a dress I bought from M & S in 1993.

CovidCorvid · 12/06/2021 23:11

I have a dress which I bought in 1994 which I still wear quite often. I get compliments on it most times I wear it.

Greyhairwarmheart · 13/06/2021 07:47

I went up to the attic yesterday to take down 2 skirts that I have been keeping for good since my brother got married 15 years ago. One was too tight but the other still fits and will be worn this week. 15 years, what was I thinking!

ShaunaTheSheep · 13/06/2021 07:54

Teenage DD is currently wearing vintage mid-1970s knitwear that my sisters and I knitted when we were her age. My parents’ attic is a goldmine/needs a bloody good clear out!

AliciaMayEmory · 13/06/2021 08:00

I still wear some pyjama bottoms that I made in GCSE textiles class in 1993!

LadyWithLapdog · 13/06/2021 08:32

I still wear a stripy knitted top bought cca 1993. It has kept its shape and colour amazingly well after so many washes. It was from Dash, not high end by any means.

I have a silk, bias-cut skirt from Warehouse that I bought to wear in India in 1994. It is in perfect condition and I still love wearing it. It's a simple style and a small paisley pattern, so somehow never looks dated Smile It makes me happy as it brings back so many good memories.

NeedWineNow · 13/06/2021 10:48

I'm a great believer in hanging onto things, especially if they're classics.
I've got a white linen drawstring waist skirt from Warehouse that I still wear which is 25 years old at the very least - even older I think, as I'm sure I bought it before DH and I got together (which is 26 years ago).

saltncheese · 13/06/2021 11:43

I'm jealous you can still get into a skirt that is 19 years old.
I have lots of quality items in my wardrobe that are that old, and I would love to wear....but I'm 2 dress sizes too big now!

MaloInAnAppleTree · 13/06/2021 13:11

@MrsMaiselsRedCoat

I love the sound of your skirt OP. I think many summer styles are timeless and also you have less opportunities to wear them than, say, a winter coat, so they last longer especially if they're a natural fabric like cotton or linen.

I recently found a Laura Ashley skirt and jacket from the 80s in my parents attic. It is pure 'Lady Diana' style, I absolutely loved her in my teens. I'd say I was about 14 when I got it. Imagine my delight when I could still fit into it at 52 😂.

It's got a pale blue and green spriggy print, the jacket is cropped with leg o' mutton sleeves and a tiny frill around the collar. It's so pretty, I've been wearing it with jeans, or olive green joggers and I white t shirt. There's nothing like a favourite item of clothing to evoke memories.

I’ve still got a Laura Ashley pure cotton circle skirt with a blue and green sprigged print from the early nineties. Well I say that…actually it’s been dyed a very deep burgundy and DD wears it on her goth days with a huge petticoat underneath it. Still doing its bit though.

It has an elastic waist @saltncheese and a very forgiving shape Grin

I have a skirt from 2000/1! It’s maxi, patterned and turquoise and I used to wear it with a wide weaved belt and a vest top. Those belts have come back in fashion now so I’m wearing the combo again with a looser cami tucked in and Birkenstocks ☺️

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 13/06/2021 21:52

Today I was wearing the wide leg trousers I bought on my honeymoon 15 years ago. 😁

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 13/06/2021 21:54

Sounds lovely Sally. Did you keep one of those belts? I remember thy look but felt too 'hip-y' to wear them. I love a long flowy maxy now and a fitted tshirt/vest.

Wide leg trousers are back, now I know I have a pair from 2008 somewhere that I kept for holidays. I must dig them out.

No I didn’t but I’ve bought one from ASOS and it’s almost the same. I used to pull the skirt (elasticy top) down to my hips and wear it there but it’s actually a skirt that sits on the waist and belt is a waist belt too (feels more modern worn this way anyway).
Taikoo · 14/06/2021 07:20

Who's your DH? Karl Lagerfeld?
I'd like to see his wardrobe.

Usually, if men don't like something it's because its not tight enough / not short enough / not showing enough flesh / they can't look down it / up it or inside it.

LunaNorth · 14/06/2021 07:22

I bought a denim jacket from the Mulberry outlet store in 2002. It’s the perfect denim jacket. Perfect cut, colour and fit. I’ve worn it consistently for nearly 20 years!

I’d never get rid of it. It’s an old friend.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 14/06/2021 07:42

Oh yes Sally, I like that look too. Must look out for a belt. I remember the old look.

OVienna · 16/06/2021 14:54

Clothes from this era are being marketed to Gen Z and Alphas as Y2K style. Sell it on Depop if you decide nit to wear it.

DD is wearing a dress of mine today, I was trying to work out how old it is, I think I got it for my 12th birthday which makes it 40 years old 😵 It could have been bought today, it's tiered, in a 70s floral print, so similar to all the dresses on sale at the moment.

I met DM for a walk the other day, she was wearing a white linen coat, slightly A line, pockets, hood, very Cos like. I actually got it in Harrods on a trip to London for my 21st birthday in 1990! It's in perfect condition, linen is definitely a fabric that gets better with age.

Funny that both items were birthday presents. They would definitely have been more expensive purchases, but look how long they've lasted.

FreekStar · 18/06/2021 13:40

Sounds like it's old enough to have come back into fashion! I have just bought a similar sounding skirt from Jigsaw.

15 years ago I was wearing floaty wide legged trousers and maxi skirts and ditched them all a few years ago for skinnies and short skirts - regretting that now!
