Barbour wax jacket

I am in the market for a new water resistant jacket that’ll last me a long time. I’m 25 and am fed up of buying clothes that don’t last longer than a two years. So I’d now rather spend more on something if it’ll I’m confident stand the test of time. Smile

I have been eying up the Barbour Beadnell wax jacket in navy, but I would like to know how well they last before purchasing. If you have one, do you love it? Has it lasted you a long time? Is it worth it the price tag? etc.

It would be my casual outdoor jacket that I could wear on walks and probably into town to pick up some groceries etc.

I recently bought this online from House of Fraser ( I live in Australia and it was on sale) I love wearing it and have been given lots of compliments. Definitely worth the money.

They last forever. You can get them re waxed every couple of years to preserve the waterproofing.

inmylifeIlovedthemall · 08/06/2021 07:11

I have had one of mine (winter weight) 35 years and another (lighter weight) 20 + years.

Obviously not the Beadnell because they didn’t make that model all those years ago.

The Older one has a few tears and has been reproofed once, the newer one is fine.

When I bought them you could return them to Barbour for repair / reproofing. I am not sure if that still applies, but it is worth checking.

My only hangup about both is that they are just not warm enough mid winter. Both need extra layers underneath, which would be fine if I was still as slim as I was when I bought them. There is no room for those extra layers now. 🤣😂

My mum bought mine for pony club camp when I was 12 with room to grow into it. I’m wearing it decades later but never quite grew enough! It has decades more life in it. Has been redressed only a couple of times. Buy with enough room to stick a padded gilet or similar under it for v cold weather- they’re completely wind proof but not super warm. They’re a fantastic buy.

Riapia · 08/06/2021 08:13

Barbour’s are ideal outdoor wear.
However don’t wear it in a car that has cloth cloth upholstery, the wax wrecks the material.

My daughter has one she wears all the time in winter, still looks as good as new 4 years on

MichelleScarn · 08/06/2021 09:03

I got my Beaufort when I was about 16, its still going strong! Have actually been reminded need to rewax it!

MichelleScarn · 08/06/2021 09:05

If you're also going for a hood get the storm hood as stays up much better!

Bichette · 08/06/2021 09:08

I bought a second hand Beadnell on EBay. Half the price and still in good condition. I agree with a pp, they are not very warm.

ExConstance · 08/06/2021 10:14

I wear DH's very old Barbour for dog walking, must be over 30 years old as he had it before our DS1 was born.

Ninkanink · 08/06/2021 10:20

They’re made to wear layers underneath, that’s what gilets are for. Makes them versatile for variable weather.

They last forever. And as far as I know Barbour do still offer repairs/reconditioning.👍

colourchanginglipstick · 08/06/2021 10:25

Yeah they last well but sadly not warm enough in winter for me. Although I've lost weight since I last wore it so might be able to get one of the zip in liners now.

Dollhousedoor · 08/06/2021 10:31

Had one for 12 years now, still as good as the day I bought it, worth every penny. I have the zip in liner and popper hood for winter too but you can skip the liner if you normally have a thick jumper on cold days.

Catscatscats00 · 07/09/2021 19:15

I got the exact jacket you asked about. I love it. I bought in in the Spring.
It looks so stylish.
One thing I’m not happy is the tartan sleeve turn ups. These are from thin cotton and I can see it to be wear through the cotton is too thin.
Did you get the jacket?

CatsForLife · 07/09/2021 19:27

My Beaufort has lasted 34 years! Still looks good. Have had it reproofed. Barbour still do it.

MadisonMontgomery · 07/09/2021 21:20

Don’t know what style mine is, I got it when I was a teenager & is still perfect 20+ years later.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 07/09/2021 21:25

I have one- the navy goes with pretty much everything. Had it about six years and still love it. The only bad thing is it’s got so many pockets I keep forgetting which one I’ve put my phone in.

I also have the zip in liner- pp’s are correct, the coat hasn't got a lot of heat in it on its own. The liner is fantastic, really toasty.

Gardenwalldilema · 07/09/2021 21:33

I love mine, I wear it with a down gilet in very cold weather, I am a pro at layering Grin
They are especially great as the hood stays up, unlike other jackets so your hands are free to walk a dog / push a pram or whatever

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 07/09/2021 21:37

I have a couple of Barbours and I love them. My only complaint is that the sleeves are so short! I do think that my arms are proportionately slightly long but I end up rolling the sleeves of my Barbours up once so that it’s like a 3/4 sleeve length or else I look like I’m in last years school coat that I’ve outgrown Grin

MeredithGreyishblue · 07/09/2021 22:04

I loved my waxy but I'm currently too fat for it. Yes, sleeves are on the short side.

I'll keep it til I lose 3 stone again. Hmm

Gladioli23 · 07/09/2021 22:10

I love my Barbours. I have two: one that's at least a decade old and still looks pretty much like new - at least it does again after getting it rewaxed. In theory you can do it yourself but it's something I'm not prepared to risk, so I just posted it off to Barbour.

I have a second one which is summer weight and only a couple of years old. It's in navy and I do think you can see the colour variation in wear on the navy a little more easily, but that's part of the charm for me really, so it's not an issue. I have other jackets for if I want to go out to dinner or somewhere smart.

Agreed that you need to leave enough room for layers in the winter, though actually if you're walking along with purpose as I always seem to be in mine it actually becomes a good thing that they aren't so hot, I think!

ThatSunnyCorner · 07/09/2021 22:16

I had one on the 80s (didn't we all Grin ). I'm really not a fan. They are cold and clammy, the wax smells and it stains your car seats.

ThatSunnyCorner · 07/09/2021 22:18

I had no idea people sent them off. Why would you not do it yourself?

Honestly, because my dad is very very practical and has tried to do his and said it was a nightmare and took ages. I'm definitely not more handy than him so I haven't risked it.

Is it really very easy? I'd be worried I wouldn't get the wax on evenly and it would look patchy or end up not quite waterproof or with wax rubbing off on everything.

AlCalavicci · 07/09/2021 22:31

I agree with all pp Barbour jackets are great but they are not warm you definitely need something underneath and in the winter I have mine for around 15 years and then handed it on to somebody else because I stopped needing it for work.

Also have a look at driz a bone* coats they are also very good
