Barbour wax jacket

I am in the market for a new water resistant jacket that’ll last me a long time. I’m 25 and am fed up of buying clothes that don’t last longer than a two years. So I’d now rather spend more on something if it’ll I’m confident stand the test of time. Smile

I have been eying up the Barbour Beadnell wax jacket in navy, but I would like to know how well they last before purchasing. If you have one, do you love it? Has it lasted you a long time? Is it worth it the price tag? etc.

It would be my casual outdoor jacket that I could wear on walks and probably into town to pick up some groceries etc.

Well back when everyone had them, we just rubbed the softened wax on, gave it another rub over, then dried it with a hairdryer. This was long before YouTube etc, everyone just waxed their own.

I've had my Barbour since school days.

It's waxed and maintained OK but I don't often choose to wear it instead of my latest love from

https://www.protected-species.com

They aren't cheap but there are often promotional codes for 50% off.

I've had my Barbour for about 5 years now and love it, I wear it dog walking and horse riding. It's a lot warmer than you'd think. My dh has had his for about 30 years Grin and although it needs rewaxing and looks a bit tatty (I think they look better a bit worn in) it's still going strong.

Franklin12 · 07/09/2021 23:16

Can you buy a hood for it? I am a size 10 5 ft 4’ .and like my jackets fitted or slim fit.

Agree the Beadnell looks very nice

SpeckledyHen · 08/09/2021 06:14

They last forever. Mine is currently away having a rewax and the sleeves shortened at last!

A couple of years ago I bought a men’s Barbour Rivington which I wear oversized as the pockets are fantastic and great in bad wether when I do t want to take a bag with me but need to have my keys, phone, dog poop bags etc on my person.

Mizydoscape · 08/09/2021 10:40

I've got a Barbour Ashbridge that is slightly padded with a big hood. I wouldn't get an unpadded one to wear in the winter. I wear mine all winter and it's 4 years old. I've just had it rewaxed by Barbour. It took 1 week from sending to receive it back and it looks like new! I think the rewax was about £35.

Ostryga · 08/09/2021 10:44

I’ve had my Barbour for 15 years, am exceptionally lazy with having it rewaxed (probably twice in that time) and it’s as good as the day I bought it. Minus the repairs from when I fell through a barbed wire fence changing the bloody spaniel 🤣

Ostryga · 08/09/2021 10:45

*chasing

MeredithGreyishblue · 08/09/2021 11:34

Oh, yeah, they do smell! Grin

MyMILisLovely · 08/09/2021 12:57

Check that it can have a hood attached. IIRC, the Beadnell is quite close- fitting.

MyMILisLovely · 08/09/2021 12:59

Re-proofing is the perfect job for a day like today. Done it many a time.

XingMing · 08/09/2021 20:41

Barbours are built for the job. I bought mine in the late 80s/early 90s and it was hijacked by my film student DS last year.

DH has had his since the 1970s; his was steam-cleaned at one stage as it smelt -- and then reproofed. Get a tin of wax (take advice but Nikwax is okay and widely available), stick wax on a hot radiator/Aga top to soften and rub it in generously, using your ironing board, until it looks almost like oiled leather. Hang it first somewhere quite warm to absorb the wax, and then let it cool and harden. If you rip it, and I have mine, I think it's worth paying for a Barbour repair as they have the right threads and materials and the original patterns.

XingMing · 08/09/2021 20:46

I did not pay for a Barbour repair... I covered the hole with a small piece of waterproof gaffer tape. But I live in a deep rural hole where binder twine is a belt.

MyMILisLovely · 08/09/2021 20:57

The Barbour wax is about £10.
I think the Beadnell takes the Sylkoil hood, but check.

Nothing wrong with binder twine as a belt, it does the job.

IlsaLund · 08/09/2021 21:07

I have two - both more than 25 years old.

hiraethh · 19/10/2021 22:50

Thank you all for your comments. I took the plunge and bought one eventually - I love it

I love a good competitive Barbour waxing thread Grin
