Anyone else's Summer wardrobe/clothes rubbish?

Teddy1970 · 30/05/2021 19:28

Or is it just me? My Winter wardrobe is great, no shortage of thick jumpers and boots, gorgeous coats etc, but Summer? Rubbish! I have a pair of white trousers and some t shirts but that's it, I don't feel comfortable in skirts or dresses...anyone else? What do I need to look stylish in the Summer?

I also sometime feel self conscious in dresses, there is just so much pattern and fabric. So I normally wear a patterned maxi skirt and a plain white or black t shirt tucked in.

Triffid1 · 01/06/2021 16:18

I love dresses but as an apple sized 16 with large breasts, it can be hard to find ones that fit nicely over my chest. And while I can usually find something with straps thick enough to cover my bra strap, I prefer dresses that have at least some sleeve as it makes them more flexible in terms of wearing in the evening (I get cold easily, especially on shoulders) or to meet clients. I've picked up a few over the years and treasure them when I do. Next seems to have a good selection this year but I find their sizing a bit odd so don't like shopping online and not sure if I can face schlepping to a big one.

So I do a lot of skirts and summer trousers instead. I've had a pair of Next capri style trousers for years which I'm wearing right now and have had various other pairs over the years (I have a bad habit of buying non-jean trousers in Spring only to discover they're a bit too heavy weight for proper summer).

And I get various t-shirts or shirts/blouses from everywhere from Sainsburys to more expensive ones from my Stitchfix box. Skirts seem to last forever so if I buy one (and I'm fussy as buying a skirt that will go with at least a few tops is tricky) it then goes into rotation for a while.

The main issue for me is that the shirts/t-shirts don't tend to last/get stained so at the start of summer I always need to go on a little shopping spree.

@Teddy1970

I don't wear shorts except by the pool or at the beach, no way would I wear them to the shops!

Yep!! Me too

LemonCake79 · 01/06/2021 16:29

See, I've embraced the short. I would never wear short shorts but I have a couple of above knee ones I love for a very casual summer look. They are from Fat Face.

I always feel quite dressed up in summer dresses so love knocking about in shorts and flip flops. I probably wouldn't wear them to meet a friend for coffee or whatever but love them for the house, supermarket, walking the dog etc. Everywhere I would have worn non smart jeans in the winter.

Iheartmysmart · 01/06/2021 16:37

I sympathise as I don’t really do summer either. At my happiest in jeans, DMs, band t-shirt and a chunky jumper, none of which translate very well into summer. Plus I’m very short a busty - dresses tend to push me into galleon in full sail territory.

. I'm a apple shape too Sad where do you tend to buy your skirts from?
Divebar2021 · 02/06/2021 08:03

I’m a size 16 with F cup boobs... formerly a size 18 with G and haven’t really encountered any issue in getting dresses to fit. I buy mine from Monki, Cos, Arket and Kin in the main.

Waveafterwaveslowlydrifting · 02/06/2021 08:07

Don't wear Popsy dresses on a hot day. They are polyester 🥵

I hate my upper arms so wear cotton t shirts and shorts. Or t shirt dresses with short leggings underneath.

Chub rub isn't a problem for me but you can by shorts to wear under dresses to combat it.

Emmylouisa · 03/06/2021 14:44

I now understand chub rub.. Thought it was just me 😂

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/06/2021 15:40

I have built up a decent summer wardrobe - midi skirts and dresses, cool t-shirts - but FAR prefer winter dressing! It’s rarely warm enough where I am (Scotland) for properly summery clothes, whereas autumn and winter stuff always gets well worn and I am happy to spend money on it.

I’m slim-ish (UK 10) but do get chub rub - I find a stick deodorant helps them to “glide”.

Triffid1 · 03/06/2021 17:05

@Neoncoral I have quite a few smarter ones from Hobbs for work/client meetings and have previously had a couple of casual ones from there too.

My two current favourites are both from my stitch fix boxes and I think both are actually from their own brand.

I'm wearing an old fashioned denim skirt right now that I've had for years and have had a few iterations over the years from places like M&S, Sainsburys, NEXT etc.

Triffid1 · 03/06/2021 17:07

Sorry, pressed send a bit too early - the two from Stitchfix are both a bit looser/more flowy ones which I am liking vs my older ones that are a bit more pencil skirt style which I think is a bit old fashioned but is, sadly, flattering for my body shape.

Turkishangora · 03/06/2021 17:19

I like dresses and white trainers, dresses mainly as I only need to think about one thing rather than a top and a bottom! As I get older I can't stand things digging in/tight/restrictive esp round the waist, needs to be light and floaty which cancels out a lot of my old wardrobe. I find with waisted dresses the waists are always to high and rather than "cinching me in" makes me look bigger than I am with one big boob so prefer a looser look.

Out in the city where I live today though I noticed every single 40s ISH mum with kids was wearing a summer dress/jumpsuit with white trainers... It's like a uniform now!

Watchingthetelly · 03/06/2021 17:29

I really just want to really chime in on how great jumpsuits and boilersuits can be if you don’t like dresses. Solid alternative

Teddy1970 · 04/06/2021 21:22

Some great ideas here, anything to get me out of my jeans!
