Anyone else's Summer wardrobe/clothes rubbish?

Teddy1970 · 30/05/2021 19:28

Or is it just me? My Winter wardrobe is great, no shortage of thick jumpers and boots, gorgeous coats etc, but Summer? Rubbish! I have a pair of white trousers and some t shirts but that's it, I don't feel comfortable in skirts or dresses...anyone else? What do I need to look stylish in the Summer?

and stop hiding in jeans.

But jeans don't hide you. I don't look great in jeans, but I wear them because they are warm and practical.

Kona84 · 30/05/2021 23:09

I wear maxi dresses in summer with a pair of tights cut off at the knees to prevent the chaffing.
I buy dresses that have a tie waist and capped sleeves.

Kona84 · 30/05/2021 23:12

I am 5ft 2 and get my maxi dresses from Dorothy Perkins they had some petite ones in that come to my ankle

I have longer jersey dresses from Arket and Cos that look good with trainers or sandals ( Birkenstock’s mainly) and cotton shirt dresses from Monki that I like with a mannish Panama hat when really hot. I don’t like the current trend for dresses w be with big puffy sleeves and tiers but there are lots around if you like them. You can buy chub rub shorts from Snag tights that I can recommend. My summer wardrobe is mainly made up of navy, black, white, blue, grey with a little blush pink. I don’t like linen head to foot but I can handle a little bit especially if it’s a linen mix. For example today I wore knee length tailored beige linen look shorts ( a bit slouchy ) with a shorter blush coloured soft cotton shirt from Weekday, white Birkenstock’s and a white / tan cross body bag. I would have worn tan sandals if I’d had any. I’ve just bought some fairly lightweight high waisted jeans in ecru from H&M. ( they have a cropped, wide leg) and will wear them with a shorter black linen shirt from H&M or an oversized navy cotton shirt from Kin. I’m looking for stone or tan wide leg trousers but I want them with pleats and pockets. I’m very fair so I prefer to be covered up rather than exposing a lot of skin. I would never wear a strappy top but t shirts that have longer sleeves - M&S do a longer sleeve length.

I love jersey loose wide leg jumpsuits, which look like midi/maxi dresses but are easier to wear. I do love a maxi dress too though, the tiered tunic style are great if it's really hot.

I wear rolled up magic trousers instead of jeans with longer length t shirts, bardot tops and broiderie anglais tops. The stone colour look like flattering chinos and the camo ones look good with plain t shirts.

My favourite thing this summer so far though has been all of the cheesecloth that's around. Shirts, jumpsuits, shirt dresses and shorts - cool, flattering and doesn't need ironing!

TableNiner · 31/05/2021 00:16

I much prefer summer dressing, but I feel the cold so usually wear jeans and a T-shirt/cardi combo up to about 28 degrees - but with sandals. If my feet are right, the rest of my outfit normally is too. I don’t like dresses or skirts either OP. I switch to shorts if it gets very hot.

What I like about summer dressing is you can wear brighter colours and more outlandish combinations without it looking garish like it would in winter. I also love wearing scarves to pull my outfit together, protect my décolletage and provide a bit of camouflage for my oversized boobs.

Could you try some cropped or rolled up jeans?

Emmylouisa · 31/05/2021 00:21

'Next' do a petite range, go for classic colours, black and caramel, they look more expensive and make you feel more dressy in the day. Footwear is difficult unless you go for white trainers or flip flops and if you've got wide feet, they're the only option.

MareofBeasttown · 31/05/2021 08:30

I am not much of a dress person and I hate polyester, so I wear Gap chinos with cotton tshirts from Rapanui or linen shirts from H and M. Trainers or sandals if v hot. Prob neither stylish nor beautiful but practical on London public transport.

Sooverthemill · 31/05/2021 09:14

Summer is my favourite time of year and I think I gave my clothes cracked for it. Winter is more of a struggle but I'm getting there!

JofraArchersFastestBall · 31/05/2021 09:16

I love winter dressing - happy to spend money on lovely jeans, boots, jumpers and coats. I'm less good at summer..

I'm not much of a dress person - love them on others, but on me they feel fussy and distracting.

For casual I recommend looking at uniqlo for their patterned drape joggers or 3/4 relaco shorts. Various colours and patterns and fabrics - some a bit pyjama like, I recommend searching for the 100% cotton ones - all very comfortable. I wear them with a plain navy or cream t shirt.

I recommend people watching for when someone is really stumped for ideas.
Watch the world go by from a High Street coffee shop, and see what people your shape and size are wearing, to get some inspiration.

Am also planning to try out some harem pants from Forgotten Tribes. www.forgottentribes.com/collections/harem-pants

Sickoffamilydrama · 31/05/2021 11:46

I have the same dilemma for different reasons. DS is 5 and still haven't shifted much of the post pregnancy weight not helped by him being number 3 & me switching to a sedantary job.

So all my nice summer clothes that used to fit have gone. I'm learning what suits me now but don't have the versatile collection I used to.

LaBellina · 31/05/2021 11:49

Next do great linen pants in a variety of sizes and colors and nice quality for a low price.

I recently ordered these and they’re great.

Standrewsschool · 31/05/2021 13:53

trousers

@LaBellina I received my order yesterday of the wide-leg version of the linen trousers - they suit my shape better. Really pleased with them and plan to wear them as an alternative to jeans.

Teddy1970 · 31/05/2021 19:25

Thanks everyone, some great advice here, looks like I might have to do some people watching to get ideas and put the jeans away, for now at least.

Don't laugh, but I've ordered these and I've hardly had them off, amazing light weight fabric, doesn't crease, as versatile as jeans.. first purchase ever from this shop but I'm impressed

Can I also recommend boden harem trousers in navy, no drop crotch like other hare's, just a lightweight cuffed jogger in the softest fabric, look great with trainers and a nice t

Slogan ts are very en vogue, you dont have to wear them tight (i definitely can't and dont) but I do think they are quite youthful. Hush have loads as do HM

I like a maxi skirt with a t, feel less girly and formal in that than a dress somehow

This is exactly how I feel, no offence to anyone here but I feel like a little girl when I wear dresses, except at weddings oddly enough, but the dresses are more structured than floaty.

I've some lovely dresses collected over the years but I tend to only wear them for evenings out so not much at the moment. In summer they just seem so impractical due to the extra acres of suncream I would have to put on legs and feet if wearing sandals. As in is, in jeans or trousers can get away just with suncream it just arms, face and neck. Also walk a lot and insects such as ticks are never far from my mind. I do my resistance exercise at home in the evening and I cannot be bothered to change again. I will already have one change of clothes from my morning run. But I often think do other people not worry about suncream? Or insects? Etc etc. Tbh I used to wear more dresses in the past and if I stuck to longish ones didn't bother suncreaming it legs and feet. But the sun seems so much hotter now, sandals seem more strappy and it all seems just such a faff! A head to toe get up would probably suit me but not really part of my culture so I think I would feel a bit weird. I even have the once a day suncream but I reserve that for face and neck because it is a bit expensive.

nordica · 01/06/2021 15:06

I've always felt like this, regardless of size. I think it's mainly because my autumn/winter wardrobe is based on creating interesting outfits with layers, and I feel a bit weird just wearing two items e.g. a skirt and a top instead of a skirt, tights, top, cardigan, scarf, jacket... Plus on the whole, the colours available in autumn/winter items are much more me than the light/bright tones around this time of year.

Also a lot of summer fabrics need a lot more work - my corduroy skirts and dungarees in the winter are fine to wear straight out of the wash but summer clothes are often linen or thin cotton and need ironing.

I've been stuck in joggers for ages as they are so flattering for my shape. I'm 5,6 and 11 stone 7 so a size 14. My problem areas are big belly and thoughts. I bought a maxi dress from m&co and quite impressed with the fit and quality.

Are these joggers lightweight?

This is an idea my friend told me too! I'm so fed up with clothes atm , it's getting me down.

I saw a lady today shopping about my age- (late thirties) who was about a size 18 , maybe bigger and looked fabulous. She had on a maxi dress and a long sleeved colour co ordinated t shirt underneath I'm guessing because she doesn't like her arms? I wouldn't have thought of doing that. She had on some lovely accessories too.

I think it about dressing to suit your body type.
