Thin hair - best blow drying tips

bigchanges1 · 22/05/2021 18:37

I’ve got thin straight hair. I usually blow dry using my fingers then a paddle brush, but end up with a flat top and flyaway, almost frizzy mid lengths to ends.

Does anyone have any tips please?Possibly for a root lift spray, suggestions for a better style brush to use and any recommendations for a shine product please?

For thin hair I would also recommend no silicones and no sls ever.

Less product the better.

@Hettylala

I have a Babyliss Big Hair and I don't rate it either. I use Maui thickening spray and a natural bristle round brush and blow dry it in sections. I've recently had my long bob cut into a much shorter stacked bob and it's much easier to get volume into it now than it was when it was longer.
Can I ask why you don’t rate it? If you’re using a round brush to blow dry your hair then that’s what a babyliss big hair does, but it takes the work out of it for you?

More heat and blasting and harsh brushes will only make the problem of thin fine hair worse, as it's so delicate. It can't take it. Bristle brushes and super hot hairdryers are terrible for fine hair.

Try using a quality volumising spray on the crown only and leaving it to air dry. Improving the condition can improve the thickness.

It’s not always a condition issue though is it? Op doesn’t say anything about delicate hair, prone to breaking or falling out, just that it’s thin and fine

Pantene Repair and Protect shampoo was a game changer for my hair - feels thicker yet light, with no flyaways. It’s cheap as chips and even Lidl sell it round here.

I use a medium barrel brush with holes when blow drying to get the air to the roots.

Now that’s where we disagree. I’ve used very nice, completely natural A’kin and Faith in Nature shampoos (the A’kin one was £12 🙈) and they both leave my thin hair flat and flyaway. Gone back to the Pantene Repair and Protect.

Cool hair rinse just before getting out of the shower+drying hair upside down with a round brush= big hair.

Thank you again for all of these tips!

My delivery arrived this afternoon - I can’t tell you how excited I was.

I double washed with my usual Aveda Pure Abundance shampoo & used the conditioner on my ends only.

Kept my hair turban on while doing skincare, then used Nioxin thickening spray lightly all over & brushed through with a paddle brush.

Rough dried & then tried out my new Babyliss Flawless Volume. Took 10 minutes tops. I am usually all fingers & thumbs, but it could not have been easier to use - even at the back.

I don’t know if any of you remember the TV advert for haircare, but it looks like I’ve just stepped out of a salon Grin

Great news!

My hair is fine but crazy curls (no pattern, just a mass!) Air drying would be pointless as I'd need to straighten the heck out of it to make it halfway manageable.

I bloody love my Flawless volume thing... I've been lazy lately. Will break it out tomorrow!

CheerfulBunny · 25/05/2021 22:29

Right, I'm convinced, buying a Babylis flawless thing now. Thanks for the update OP Smile

Everyoneknows OP says she has "flyaway, almost frizzy mid lengths to ends" and that her hair is "thinner around forehead & temples & through my centre-parting". It does sound like a condition issue to me as I have (had) very similar hair until I stopped the harsh hot dryers, thickening sprays, mousses etc and concentrated on getting the condition better.

It felt counter-intuitive to not try and create body every day with the dryers, hot brushes etc but I was literally making my thin hair thinner because it was going wispy with the battering. Not all but a lot of thin/fine hair is really delicate and can hardly take any harsh treatment at all.

I think it's because the barrel is still too big, even though I have the petite version. I get a much better result with my smaller round brush and my hair doesn't get tangled up either.

I love my vented wet brush for drying

Backcombing!! My hairdresser backcombs the roots and then hides the backcombed scaffolding under the top blowdried hair - managed to make my thin hair HUGE!!!
