Thin hair - best blow drying tips

bigchanges1 · 22/05/2021 18:37

I’ve got thin straight hair. I usually blow dry using my fingers then a paddle brush, but end up with a flat top and flyaway, almost frizzy mid lengths to ends.

Does anyone have any tips please?Possibly for a root lift spray, suggestions for a better style brush to use and any recommendations for a shine product please?

Babyliss big hair!

LavendulaAngustifolia · 22/05/2021 18:40

Mousse at the roots and blow dry with head upside down.

kneesbentarmsstretchedrararaaa · 22/05/2021 18:40

I love the Babyliss Big Hair too. It has transformed my hair. Have also heard good things about Aveda Thickening Tonic.

CheerfulBunny · 22/05/2021 19:09

I feel you, OP and placemarking - dithering over buying the Revlon hot air brush thing. It's in my Amazon basket right now. I just don't want to buy another crap gadget that doesn't work.

Rockbird · 22/05/2021 19:12

I have the same. Definitely losing hair on top and the rest of it is pretty awful. I absolutely detest my hair and don't know what to do with it.

ZoeMaye · 22/05/2021 19:34

I put mousse through the roots, and then top it upside down to dry. Or sometimes I will just pull it out from my head and blow dry it out to the sides and up in the air. Sometimes I use a big roller brush especially around my crown where the hair is sparser, and I will sometimes back comb that section and add a little hairspray too (my crown section is quite sparse, I also have sparse areas around the front but they don't bother me so much although they used to bother me more!) I use silicone free volumising shampoo and conditioner, and also a detox shampoo every couple of weeks as I find my hair gets flatter and finer looking when it has product build up on it.

I do have a babyliss big hair but don't rate it compared with a big round brush and normal dryer. Flat brush flattens the hair so great for a smooth look but not for volume.

Roominmyhouse · 22/05/2021 20:07

I love my babyliss big hair too. Definitely don't use a paddle brush unless you want flat hair, a round bristle brush is what you want. Size dependent on hair length.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 22/05/2021 20:10

Volumising mousse, roots and all over. BabyLiss Flawless Volume Hot Air Styler. I found the big hair too cumbersome for hair, much prefer the Flawless Volume.

tobee · 22/05/2021 20:20

I find if I use volumising products at the front it can sort of create a tunnel of see through hair. I try to use thickening products at the front and volumising at the back.

I have a side parting (coz it's easy) and try to use my babyliss big hair at the back. Brushing that section the wrong way to create lift at the back.

That's what I try to do. With varying degrees of success.

randomkey123 · 22/05/2021 20:29

Nioxin thickening spray has completely transformed my hair. It's brilliant, and doesn't make your hair feel tacky like some blow dry sprays.

I tried the revlon big hair but it was crap on my hair.

101kids · 22/05/2021 20:30

I’d use a rounded brush for volume and a bit of mouse or product.

I keep my bobbed for this reason

MabelMoo23 · 22/05/2021 20:31

I have the Dyson Airwrap and I use the hot brush styling bit and it’s made a huge difference to my shit thinning perimenopausal hair.

Appreciate it’s an expensive gadget to buy and I don’t even use the barrels. But it get used by all the family as the heat is lower and I use the paddle brush attachment on my girls and it’s stops their hair getting tangly

cherrypiepie · 22/05/2021 20:38

Revlon one step here (the large oval one)! Use it everyday in my fine hair and love it.

Have a look a a few you tube videos on the difference between the Babylon and revlon.

It takes me 10 mins before work everyday as fine hair dries so quick.

I use wella shockwaves mousse .

LizzieSiddal · 22/05/2021 20:45

I have shoulder length, thin hair with a few layers. I use a big round brush and blow dry in sections, in the evening. When it’s first done it looks too big and bouncy but by the time I’ve slept on it it’s calmed down and just had a bit of a curl, which stays in until the next time I wash it.

I also use Philip Kingsley shampoo and conditioner, for thin hair. It is Brilliant!

bigchanges1 · 22/05/2021 20:58

Thank you for all of your messages.

My hair is mid-length just below my shoulders. Definitely thinner around forehead & temples & through my centre-parting.

Using a round brush seems to be the way forward, but as I’ve never been great at blowdrying my own hair, I’m YouTubing the babyliss big hair, babyliss flawless and the revlon one step.

Love the tip about thickening product at the front & volumising at the back. I’m so heavy handed with products. That’s why I thought a spray would be better than a mousse, as I can direct it to the roots. But a mousse all over could add volume instead of dragging it down which I thought it would…

You could be describing my hair OP.
I bought a Revlon One Step Volumiser and it is a total game changer, I can now do a salon level blow dry!
Don’t use mousse, only condition the very ends, and use a thickening serum or a volumising powder.

ohnoohnoohnononononoo · 22/05/2021 22:02

Dyson airwrap!

ohnoohnoohnononononoo · 22/05/2021 22:03

I have both the big hair and the reckon one step and both ravage the hair physically and with heat

HunterHearstHelmsley · 22/05/2021 22:10

Noooooooo to the Airwrap! I bought one thinking it would be a game changer. My hair is fine (but not super fine) and it just blew my hair around. It looked worse than if I'd just rough dried it.

Thankfully I could get a refund, I was gutted at the thought of spending £450 for nothing.

bigchanges1 · 23/05/2021 07:41

Your replies have given me lots of ideas - thank you.

I’m going to try Nioxin 3D thickening spray on damp hair and try a round brush with my hairdryer.

Knowing I’m usually not very good with blowdrying, I’m also going to order the Babyliss Flawless. I’ll come back & let you know how I get on once my haul gets delivered.

Sounds like user error!

I use the revlon hot air brush. It’s fabulous.

Kidson · 24/05/2021 05:48

Redken pillow proof spray, head upside down to blast it and use a large round vented metal brush to brush to finish the blow dry. You want it pulled quite tight around the brush and pulled up to as high an angle as possible to get volume. Unroll the brush enough to let your hair fall off the brush then leave it don’t brush through for a couple of minutes so it sets

Hettylala · 24/05/2021 08:19

I have a Babyliss Big Hair and I don't rate it either. I use Maui thickening spray and a natural bristle round brush and blow dry it in sections. I've recently had my long bob cut into a much shorter stacked bob and it's much easier to get volume into it now than it was when it was longer.
